In advance of her rare North American tour in May, Norwegian songwriter Ane Brun has premiered her video cover of Arcade Fire’s “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)” with Rolling Stone. The track will be available on the iTunes Exclusive version of Ane’s new album, It All Starts With One, out May 1st via [PIAS] America. Ane is also taking the darkly cool UK songstress Gemma Ray out on the road to support her on the U.S. tour.
Of her decision to cover the song, Ane says “I’ve always seen a challenge and a fascination in peeling out a great melody of a musical arrangement that at first listen seems far away from what I normally would perform; “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)” is such a song. I’ve become a huge fan of Arcade Fire in the last couple of years. And this song in particular has been close to my heart. There is something so magical about the lyrics, and of course I love the melody.”
Leading into her release of It All Starts with One, Ane Brun is also pleased to announce the release of the Do You Remember EP on April 10th on [PIAS] America. The six-song collection includes two Ane originals (“Do You Remember,” which features First Aid Kit, and “One Last Try”). The EP is rounded out with three covers of songs by Antony and the Johnsons, Mercedes Sosa, and Built to Spill.
The EP’s opener “Do You Remember” is a euphoric, almost tribal track, characterized by three drummers and backing vocals from fellow Scandinavians First Aid Kit. The track will also appear on It All Starts with One. The EP’s cover songs hold special importance to Ane. “All three artists and songs are close to my heart, connected to different periods of my life,” says Ane.
Much like her music, the path that led Ane Brun to It All Starts With One and the Do You Remember EP was peaceful, unhurried and full of unexpected, subtle surprises. It’s taken her from her small Norwegian hometown of Molde, to Barcelona where she was a street performer, and across the US last year supporting Peter Gabriel and singing on his New Blood album. The adventures culminated with the making of her new album It All Starts with One, a platinum hit in Norway for which she just won their Grammy equivalent, the Spellemann award, for best female artist.
