Yasmine Hamdan Reveals "Beirut" Video, Watch + Share; "Ya Nass" Out 3/25

New Album Ya Nass Available in US on 3/25

The upcoming album by Yasmine HamdanYa Nass (Crammed Discs) is an elegant, borderless stream of electro folk pop, with acoustic guitars, vintage synths, and spellbinding atmospheres. The record is grounded in Yasmine’s evocative voice, which make these songs familiar, even as they are sung in various Arabic dialects.

To illustrate the new video for the track “Beirut”, with its nostalgic lyrics adapted from a text written in the 1940s by poet Omar El Zenni (see excerpt below), Yasmine Hamdan and her director Nadim Asfar used footage from super 8 films which were purchased in a Lebanese souk by one of Yasmine's friends, who collects them.

These films were shot in various eras (from the 40s to the 70s), and are bringing these bygone times back to life… as does the song, which talks about Beirut's odd destiny, its subsequent deaths and resuscitations (the city was destroyed seven times, but always rises back from its ashes). By mixing these old films with shots of her performing the song, Yasmine Hamdan has created a moving & poetic tribute to the city where she was born. Courtesy of Paste, you can watch the compilation HERE.

In addition to Ya Nass, Yasmine will be appearing as herself in the new Jim Jarmusch film Only Lovers Left Alive. She will be singing her song “Hal”, from Ya Nass, in the film featuring Tilda Swinton that will be released April 2014.

BEIRUT

Drinking arak, playing cards, cheering race horses, hunting pigeons…
The essence of Beirut
Seduction crowd cruising around, fooling about, it's all there is on the minds
of the citizens of Beirut
Beirut, a flower out of its season

What a waste if it withered

Recent praise for TOURIST:
"...the melancholic bass boils over slowly into a euphoric beat that will keep dance floors on both sides of the Atlantic buzzing about this emerging producer-to-watch"NPR

A bold departure from this year's stately "I Have No Fear", London producer Tourist makes his bow on the Disclosure-affiliated Method label by shedding almost every element of his serene slowburners that preceded this new cut. The tune's early momentum cedes to an anthemic climb, taking stylistic cues from the skyscraping synths of mid-2000s electro house and the rhythmic chug of '80s hi-NRG Italo disco, blended together with expert craftsmanship. - Pitchfork

IMMORTAL BIRD: Blackened Death Thrash Behemoths Kick Off US Tour

On this day, Friday, February 28th, 2014, Chicagoan blackened death thrash behemoths, IMMORTAL BIRD, with bring their scathing psalms of sickness to the stage on a ten-city jaunt of live incursions. Set to inaugurate this evening in Columbus, the feisty pheasants will spread their auditory disease through Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut before coming to a close on their home turf on March 10th.

Relays vocalist/drummer Rae Amitay: "Three months after releasing our Akrasia EP, we're chomping at the bit to play these shows and perform the album in its entirety! We'll be debuting some new material as well. Come see us fuck shit up -- respectfully, of course -- if we're coming through your town! Hide your kids. Hide your wife. Unless they're into blackened gross crusty deathish metal. Then we'd like to hang out."

IMMORTAL BIRD: Akrasia In The East Tour 2014:
2/28/2014 Ace Of Cups - Columbus, OH
3/01/2014 Roger's Bar - Virginia Beach, VA w/ Occultist
3/02/2014 Strange Matter - Richmond, VA w/ Occultist
3/03/2014 The Depot - York, PA w/ Diamond Plate, East Of The Wall
3/05/2014 The Acheron - Brooklyn, NY w/ Mortals
3/06/2014 Ralph's - Worcester, MA w/ Obsidian Tongue
3/07/2014 Cherry St. Station - Wallingford, CT
3/08/2014 The Smiling Moose - Pittsburgh, PA
3/09/2014 Now That's Class - Cleveland, OH
3/10/2014 Cobra Lounge - Chicago, IL

IMMORTAL BIRD will be touring in support of their destructive Akrasia EP, released late last year
via Closed Casket Recordings. Recorded at Lo-Tech Laboratories by unsung Windy City audio mystic Jeff Ziolo, mixed by Kurt Ballou (Converge, Isis, High On Fire, Skeletonwitch) at Godcity Studio, and mastered by Brad Boatright (Sleep, From Ashes Rise, Nails, All Pigs Must Die) at Audiosiege,Akrasia flaunts four flagrant hymnals of elegantly consuming grimness and psychosomatic anguish led by the sadistic vocal tirades of Rae Amitay (Thrawsunblat). Dubbed "dark and twisting," by Decibel and commended for its "inward-looking cosmopolitan ugliness that sometimes evokes a less-patient version of early Castevet," by Invisible Oranges, the brief but punishing underground gem continues to reap widespread fuck-yeahs and general panic from metal critics in-the-know.

IMMORTAL BIRD was spawned by Amitay who yearned to step out from behind the confines of her drum kit, write some riffs and shriek. She recruited longtime friend/guitarist Evan Berry (Wilderun, Replacire) and bassist John Picillo. With Amitay opting to handle the mic onstage while tackling drums and vocals on their albums, Garry Naples (Novembers Doom, Kastasyde, Without Waves) was drafted to take on all live drum duties.

"...sick and greasy black metal that does an admirable job inventing the sound of a mind tearing itself apart." - The Chicago Reader

"Distinctly disturbing and beautifully harsh. 9/10" - Ghost Cult

"...nineteen minutes of metal greatness. 10/10" - This Is Not A Scene

"...these songs don't really make their point; they insist on it. 8/10" - Last Rites

"Picture the earliest output of bands like Dissection and the more recent offerings of bands like Belphegor or Vreid and that at least puts you in the ballpark...IMMORTAL BIRD is more than just a female vocalist or a female drummer. It's three people who've come together, clearly with a lot of piss and vinegar in their collective systems, now creating the perfect outlet for release." - Metal Insider

"The majority of Akrasia is filled with spite, venom and a penchant for speed, but it is the mellower moments that help to add depth to an already impressive outing," - The Lair Of Filth

Akrasia is out NOW via Closed Casket Recordings. Order your copy today for a cool $4.50 atTHIS LOCATION.

About Check Yo Ponytail 2:

Check Yo Ponytail 2 is an open-genre, open-format party held monthly at the Echoplex in Los Angeles. The event has become known for highlighting some of today's top performers, with a few tried and true legacy acts in between. There's no doubt that Check Yo Ponytail 2 has played an integral part in the evolution of the modern music scene, supporting music that challenges the way we think about and enjoy culture in the day to day.

In the past, many of today's progressive artists including JusticeMatt & KimBoys Noize, and countless others made their Los Angeles debuts at a Check Yo Ponytail 2 event. CYP2 has since expanded beyond its home at the Echoplex through a series of specially branded events that include parties at SXSW, stage takeovers at Electric Forest, and the CYP Tour, a mobile version of the show that takes the full Check Yo production on the road.

While the lineups remain an integral part of the show going experience, it's the extended Check Yo Ponytail universe that make the parties "MORE THAN A SHOW" complete with live visuals, original flyer artwork, collaborative mixtapes, professional photo and video coverage, and online social media interactions that create an experience like no other.

Baltimore-based duo, DARSOMBRA, is about to embark on the most extensive tour excursion in the band's history, beginning tomorrow, February 28th in Richmond, Virginia.

After releasing a plethora of albums and EPs through At A Loss Recordings, Public Guilt, Underradar and others, DARSOMBRA signed with Exile On Mainstream for the release of their Climax Community LP in mid-2012.The album traverses forty-five minutes of the outfit's slow-building, transcendental soundscapes, where searing guitar riffs, leads, loops, and samples, combine to form elements of metal, psychedelic rock, experimental/drone, prog and krautrock. Yet, Climax Communityis also where the act transformed from a solo act to a duo and began incorporating immersive visual displays to their auditory experimentation, with mini-films created to accompany the music both on record and during live performances. DARSOMBRA is writing the follow-up LP to Climax Communityas well as material for additional releases being slated for later in the year following the massive tour.

“…off-center chords and steady beat opener “Lights” could make you think of Sonic Youth in a quieter moment.” The Boston Globe

Guitarist Nir Felder’s debut album Golden Age was released January 21st via OKeh to rave reviews across the board. Golden Age puts Nir’s skills as a composer and songwriter at the forefront of his creative design, supported by virtuosic technique. To experience Nir Felder’s live performance is at once both technically fascinating & charming, and fans in NYC & Philly will get the chance to enjoy his captivating live show this spring!

For a taste of Nir’s dynamic show, he’s given MSN Music a glimpse into why he’s been named “one of the exciting young voices in jazz guitar” (WNYC Soundcheck) with a live rendition of Golden Age LP cut, “Lights.” You can check out the “Lights” live video HERE, and we encourage you to post & share!

Nir recruited pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Matt Penman & drummer Nate Smith to help bring his unique musical vision to life. To augment the band’s instrumental take on those questions, he studied dozens of legendary speeches by politicians, civil rights leaders & cultural heroes, and mixed spoken-word samples into the new tracks. The results aresweeping, cinematic impressions of history brought into the present moment.

Though not a concept album, the title Golden Age provides a unifying sentiment- one of ambiguity & duality. As Nir explains, “it’s more of a question than a statement. We’ve seen a lot of change in recent years- in the music industry, in music technology, in our world, our country, and our city, New York.”

Stay tuned for more news from Nir Felder coming soon!

FOSSILS: Full Album From Danish Instrumental Maniacs Streaming At No Clean Singing

Denmark's off-the-chain drums/bass duo, FOSSILS, is ready to provide their meaty sophomore LP,Flesh Hammer, this coming Monday, March 3rd.

FOSSILS' succinctly pulverizing Flesh Hammer is packed with ten precise, noisy, no-bullshit pieces of instrumental noise rock in twenty minutes, produced by Danish sound-enigma Q (Beta Satan, Entombed). The past several weeks saw FOSSILS careening on a rambunctious pre-release propaganda campaign which included virtually giving the entire album as in-studio videos one-by-one, as well as the release of a video filmed in an abandoned factory in Philadelphia after midnight where the band and album names were laser-etched onto a slab of beef jerky. Now, for their final swindle before the dropping of the Flesh Hammer, the entire album has been carved up and served over at No Clean Singing in one big old family-style helping for all to gorge upon, the open-all-day purveyor noting of the platter, "Fossils do create skull-splitting grooves, but they also generate a storm of hornet-swarm riffs that veer from feedback-drenched cacophony to some seriously spine-shaking rock 'n' roll. It's more than slightly unhinged - it's rude, raving, and radioactive."

Leave your utensils behind; get your hands dirty and feast on the Flesh Hammer right now, RIGHT HERE.

And just because the record is streaming now, doesn't mean you can't still scope out that gnarly laser vs. beef jerky episode with the "Filet Horizon" video playing HERE.

The bangin' Flesh Hammer wax -- limited to 300 copies on virgin black vinyl -- is shipping now! Order direct from the sole North American meatmarket carrying the Flesh Hammer, Earsplit Distro, rightHERE or direct from Indisciplinarian web shop HERE.

The release Flesh Hammer will be celebrated with two Danish release shows, at Radar in Aarhus onFebruary 28th and at Beta in Copenhagen, on March 1st. In the unconventional spirit of FOSSILS, these will not simply be "typical" release shows with the usual canapés and support bands, but instead an overload of awesome musical guests will be involved in each of the performances, not at least at the Aarhus gig where the program is quite overwhelming. Aarhus will see the resurrection ofFOSSILS' old band, the local high-octane rock n' roll heroes, Studson playing a sweet set of oldies but goodies. Then FOSSILS will mutate into their own doom version, Slissof, covering an old Cola Freaks-classic with several guests from Cola Freaks, Rising and Studson. Hereafter, FOSSILS will perform Flesh Hammer from beginning to end, and finally the dynamic duo concludes the show when joined by numerous vocalists such as Jacob Bredahl (The Kandidate, ex-HateSphere) and Kim Kix (Powersolo) who will interpret various FOSSILS compositions from earlier releases. In CopenhagenFOSSILS will play a more straight-up set and special guests will be the aforementioned Studson and new local rock outfit, Weak.

FOSSILS Flesh Hammer Record Release Shows:
2/28/2014 Beta - Copenhagen, Denmark
3/01/2014 Radar - Arhaus, Denmark

"This here is well written yet chaotic buzzing and distorted bass and drum instrumental attacks bouncing off your skull in a jackhammer whir of snare hits and tom rolls, screeching noise and sped up Tool riffs. Insane cymbal work and especially addictive kick drum patterns... Show your teeth!" - Metal Riot

"My bobble-head was nodding by the time it ended (I'm talking about the thing that sits between my shoulders)." - No Clean Singing

"These Danish fellows are energetic and loud, and while they like to keep things short, they pack as much noise as they can into each and every track... Imagine The Jesus Lizard and Kylesa combined forces... Their music is loud and constantly shifting rhythms and tempos." - Media Snobs

The resulting ten track beast of a record, entitled All Hell's Martyrs, will be released by Ván Records in March 2014.

Vocalist and bass player, Nemtheanga commented: "Things come together fast on the surface but theDREAD SOVEREIGN album has been dwelling in my subconscious for years, playing riffs to myself over the years. It's only in the last fifteen months that I've put flesh on the bones with a proper band and here we are with an album ready for Ván Records to release. The aspirations are difficult to explain as it's been a form of catharsis to finally get the demons out after all this time but here it is; some gnarled and evil old school doom/metal -- a few surprises and different elements here and there -- but nothing more and nothing less."

Recorded and mixed at Dublin's Sun Studios in September 2013, All Hell's Martyrs is a sepulchral trawl through the darkest recesses of heavy metal. The album artwork was created by Costin Chioreanu whose previous credits include Grave, Darkthrone, Aura Noir and Absu.

Today, Roadburn.com has hosted a premiere of the first single from All Hell's Martyrs, with the track "Cthulu Opiate Haze," now playing RIGHT HERE.

DREAD SOVEREIGN is Nemtheanga (vocals & bass), Dubh Sol (drums) and Bones (guitar); a triumvirate of old-school attitude and arcane spirituality. Although retaining the rugged, epic drama of Primordial (in which Nemtheanga and Dubh Sol both perform), DREAD SOVEREIGN is distinctly different, blending influences of Venom, Saint Vitus and Cirith Ungol in the raw underground cult doom idiom.

THE OATH to Release Self-Titled Debut April 15th on Rise Above Records

Artwork and Track Listing Revealed
To master the dark and wring compelling creativity from its densest shadows requires vision, belief and, perhaps most importantly, a dash of synchronicity. These are all qualities that ooze from every pore of the debut album by THE OATH. A band forged around the fizzing, feral chemistry between Swedish guitarist Linnea Olsson and German vocalist Johanna Sadonis, THE OATH represent the wild magic that erupts when two blazing souls collide and fate is sent veering off course by sheer strength of the human will. This is heavy metal at its most mercurial and intuitive.

Having found each other and discovered that their obsessions, desires and musical urges were utterly compatible and swiftly and irrevocably interwoven, Linnea and Johanna set about devising an artistic masterplan. The results of that plan are now primed to emerge, fully-formed and thrumming with primal energy and pristine passion, in the shape of THE OATH: a nine-song clarion call that simultaneously recalls the hallowed greats of heavy rock, punk and metal - from Sabbath, Trouble and Angel Witch through to the Stooges and Poison Idea, and further to Mercyful Fate and Danzig - while revelling in new ways to express the spirit of those revered archetypes. Recorded in ten days at Studio Cobra in Stockholm with producer Konie Ehrencrona at the controls and the raging rhythm section of Simon Bouteloup (bass, Kadavar/ex-Aqua Nebula Oscillator) and Andrew Prestidge (Angel Witch/Winters) underpinning Linnea and Johanna's otherworldly hymns to the black, THE OATH is a triumph for soul and sonic ceremony, with conviction and integrity bursting from every artfully-crafted riff and ethereal melodic motif.

Veering from the strident grooves and shimmering menace of opener All Must Die to the breakneck, Luciferian clatter of Black Rainbow and on to the spine-tingling grandeur and grime of epic closer Psalm 7, THE OATHis anything but just another addition to the modern pseudo-occult rock canon. Instead, it is an extraordinary glimpse into its creators' overpowering charisma and chemistry and a thrillingly, hyper-nourishing dose of authentic, 21st century heavy metal sorcery. With input from In Solitude's Henke Palm  - who contributes some "improvised Voivod-style solos", according to Linnea - and logo designed courtesy of Watain's Erik Danielson, this is an album that exudes ageless style and irresistible substance: a potent antidote to the flimsy fripperies of the modern age.

And now, this new ritual begins. THE OATH has been sworn, the dice have been thrown. All that remains is the propagation of the divine but unholy art that these sisters-in-sound have wrenched from the depths of their harmonised psyches. The future belongs to those who believe...
