There's something significant about February 25th for Seattle's Special Explosion. Not only is that the date that the young band previously opened for Deerhoof and played the Experiece Music Project's Sound Off! (the premier 21 and under battle of the bands) but today is the release date of their much anticipated debut EP The Art of Mothering on Topshelf Records.

Special Explosion has won early praise from places such as Pitchfork ("the best Built to Spill riff of the past five years or so heads a couple hours west and ends up in the hands of Special Explosion"), SPIN ("It's tension pulled between polar extremes, that builds to a hushed admission of weakness ("I'm closing off to you") before a cathartic scream loops into Mascisian outro") andStereogum ("the song rides a rock-solid foundation built from booming toms, grooving bass, and (especially) melodic guitar string-bends straight from the heavens") for their 90s influenced indie rock.
Though the band has drawn early comparisons to Death Cab For Cutie, Built To Spill and The Thermals, the gorgeous vocal duets present in their songs show the band avoids the trappings of being pigeonholed as strict revivalists as The Art of Mothering demonstrates the members are excellent songwriters of their own merit.
Special Explosion is currently on a US tour including several SXSW dates.
