Pickathon 2012, happening Aug. 3 - 5 at Pendarvis Farm near Portland, Oregon, is excited to welcome four new additions to its already stellar lineup: The War on DrugsThee Oh Sees, THEESatisfaction andCardboard Songsters. These great bands join other festival highlights such as Neko Case, Blitzen Trapper, Dr. Dog, Vieux Farka Touré, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, and much, much more. The full lineup is listed below. Tickets are still on sale but moving fast. The festival is expected to sell out this year, so go to www.pickathon.com and purchase them now!

In addition to these new performers, Pickathon is thrilled to announce that it will be expanding upon its revolutionary NO-SINGLE-USE POLICY with cups, dishware, utensils, and containers. In what is universally heralded as the cleanest festival in the country, perhaps the world, Pickathon is the only festival to employ these very unique and effective green initiatives, eliminating single use beer cups, water bottles, dishware, utensils, and containers. HERE’S HOW:

  • Eliminating Single Use Cups, Bottles, and Containers - Pickathon has replaced the otherwise common plastic beer cups with branded stainless steel cups, provided by Klean Kanteen, which each attendee holds on to for the weekend. As you can imagine, beer cups account for a large portion of any festival’s waste. Last year, this one measure reduced total waste by 21% per person and landfill waste by 16% per person. This year, single-use beverage containers, such as bottles and cans, are also being eliminated from the backstage areas, being replaced with kegs and stainless steel cups for artists and staff.

  • Eliminating All Single Use Dishware and Utensils - By using a simple system that employs tokens exchanged for dishware, last year Pickathon reduced total waste by 17% per person and landfill waste by 33%. While other festivals outside the US have attempted similar initiatives, Pickathon is unrivaled with its level of customer presentation and financial sustainability. For those curious as to how the token system works, this poster should clear up any questions.

  • Local Resources and Renewable Energy - This year, Pickathon will be building several new bars on the festival grounds made entirely from local lumber, largely out of naturally downed trees that will help repurpose and beautify the three unique serving areas Pickathon has to offer. Solar energy use at Pickathon is pervasive and covers several significant areas of production, such as offsetting power in both the indoor Barn venues and much of the vending area. Other site-wide coverage includes supplying power to 3.5 miles of LED strands for trail lights at night, attendee device charging stations, ticketing and front gate check-in, medical tent, and many of the food and beverage vendors. In 2012, on-site energy generation can be monitored on the web in realtime using DECK Monitoring, the innovative Portland, Oregon company that’s helping define energy intelligence. These steps, along with other common sense, eco-conscious initiatives, such as enabling over 15% of the audience to take alternate transportation methods, which include biking and a mass-transportation partnership with Eco-shuttle, solidify Pickathon as being on the avant-garde of large-scale and green events.
