Goldrush emerged on the scene after guitarist and vocalist, Prabir
Mehta's, previous band, Prabir and the Substitutes disbanded
in early 2009. The group had been working on new songs and Prabir had reached
out to double bassist, Matt Gold, and violinist, Treesa
Gold, two classically trained strings performers at the Richmond
Symphony, to play on some of their tracks. When The Substitutes broke up,
the Gold's and Mehta still wanted to take a crack at a release together. This
led to their self-released EP, We Don't Have to Worry.
Goldrush's upcoming release for the Making Moves series,
which is supported in part by the Kal & Lucille Rudman Institute for
Entertainment Industry Studies at Drexel University, will consist of three new
unique tracks from the Richmond Virginia band. Matt Taylor bassist
of Motion City Soundtrack produced the tracks along with
Drexel's Music Industry Program alumnus, Dave Petit and Lenny
Skolnik engineering the sessions. The 7" was then handed
over to Phil Nicolo (John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, The
Police) for his expert mixing. Goldrushs' Making Moves release
opens with "Settle Down", an infectious and grooving
track, with a slinky hook that builds with a captivating fervor. The
up-tempo indie pop track "REX" hits with aggressive
strings and Mehta's playful lyricism urging an escape from his long-standing
reality. The bonus track on the digital release, "The Dream is
Over", brings a dark twist to the mix with intricate string runs
and a heavy drum and bass line that will haunt and delight.
Matt Taylor states, "It's a funny story. I was
cleaning my house with iTunes blaring on shuffle. A song that I didn't
recognize came on. It sounded like Jon Spencer Blues Explosion with bits of
Elvis Costello, Soul Coughing, Led Zeppelin, with two classical instruments
thrown in. It blew my mind so I checked to see what it was. Of course it was
labeled Track 01 and there was no band name. I remembered that from time to
time my friend Kevin would send me songs that he had recorded, so I took a shot
in the dark and asked him who it was. The song in question ended up being
"Touch" by a band called Goldrush that he had recorded months
earlier. I had never heard them until that moment when they shuffled their way into
my life. I immediately did some research on the band and found out that they
were playing a show. I went to see them and was blown away. I knew then that I
had to work with them in some fashion. When the Making Moves series came about,
Goldrush was my only choice."
Goldrush has shared the stage with the likes of The
Head and The Heart, Dr. Dog, Hotel Lights, Trampled By
Turtles, Ted Leo, Motion City Soundtrack, Cracker, Girltalk, Best
Coast, J Roddy Waltson and The Business and was a featured
performer at the 2012 SXSW Music Festival as well as performed
a live score during the silent film Battleship Potemkin at
the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
