Filter 89% : Other Lives have managed to pull off a
feat more remarkable than releasing a few engaging tunes—they’ve
created an album. A dark mediation on man’s relationship with beasts,
Tamer Animals highlights the band’s ability to skirt precious by
painting with the dark hues of cello, bassoon, piano, guitar and Jesse
Tabish’s Lennon-by-way-of-Wainwright vocals. Tamer Animals proves that
more of less isn’t just memorable—it’s damn near magical.
Pitchfork: meticulously written and arranged and, at times, vividly cinematic. In the wrong hands, this music could feel labored or overstuffed, but thanks to the makeshift orchestra's shaggy ringleader, Jesse Tabish, these wistful Americana-styled tracks (influenced by Tabish favorites Sigur Rós and Godspeed You! Black Emperor) rarely feel forced. Instead of the big studio sound of their self-titled debut, Tamer Animals feels organic and lovingly crafted, a record whose lushness often invites you to simply collapse into it.

Spin Magazine 7 out of 10:
"Like their regional brethren Midlake, these Oklahomans seem fascinated
by folky Englishmen of yore, though Other Lives lean more toward Fleet
Foxes than Fleetwood Mac. There's even a dose of New Roman-ticism on
their second album's title track, which could nestle nicely on a John
Hughes soundtrack. Jesse Tabish's laid-back, borderline affectless voice
can get tiresome, but layers of strings and piano (the droney "Old
Statues") or ghostly backing voices (the haunting "As I Lay My Head
Down") are usually enough to keep Tamer Animals from feeling too
domesticated."
Paste Magazine : "In 2009, we called Other Lives
self-titled record "criminally underrated." Now the band has a new
record called Tamer Animals slated for a May 10 release on TBD
Records/White Iris Records, and we're determined to help get them the
attention they deserve. "
KCRW : "Oklahoma's Other Lives have just put the
finishing touches on a truly sensational sophomore release, 'Tamer
Animals'. Lush and haunting"
Consequence Of Sound : "Expect your hairs to stand
on end or expect to shed a tear and not know why. Simply feel inspired,
because you can’t help but be taken on a journey upon listening."
Hear Ya : "pick up this album, turn it up loud, close your eyes and make a movie in your head." -
You Aint No Picasso : "Tamer Animals has been a fantastic record to listen to"
Absolute Punk 95 % : Tamer Animals, the sophomore full-length from Oklahoma based quintet Other Lives is a beautiful and equally powerful listen.
