Get To Know: Angela Hunte

ANGELA HUNTE was born and raised in East Flatbush, a very diverse area of Brooklyn, NY.
Coming from such a multicultural borough, she was influenced by all the different music that
surrounded her as a child.  Perhaps due to the fact that she also partially grew up in the West
Indies (on the island of Trinidad and Tobago) where she only had access to British radio, Angela
was drawn to European artists such as Phil Collins, Shirley Bassey, Sting and David Bowie.  It
was from these artists that she acquired her love for pop songs.

At the age of 15, Angela began her quest to become a singer-songwriter.  Determined to be one
of the best writers to come out of New York, Angela spent many years working on her craft, which
lead to her work in the rap world where she would go on to craft some of the most infectious hooks
in the industry.  It was from here that her relationship with producer Salaam Remi was born.  This
7-year relationship would eventually lead to Salaam Remi finding her a contract with EMI publishing,
in which she would write exclusively in Europe.  EMI management believed that with hard work,
Angela could become one of the most important writers in the EMI system for many years to come,
and it was with this in mind that she set out to prove she would become that and more.  In 2001
Angela moved to London and then Sweden, where she began work with some of the top producers
in Europe.

Upon discovering the huge underground Drum & Bass and Dubstep scenes in London, Angela
quickly immersed herself in these sounds and became a 'go to name' for both.  In the process, she
was able to fuse her Brooklyn sound with London's premiere music makers to create some of the
top hits in Europe.  However, Angela missed New York City, and it was this yearning for her
hometown that lead her to pack up her arsenal of cultural experiences and new sounds, and move
back home to try her luck with the music scene in America.

Angela quickly made her presence known among the elite writers of America and went on to write
and produce some of the most invigorating and influential music to come out of New York City. In
2009, during a writing trip to London, she awoke one morning and knew that she wanted to write a
song about her beloved city New York. Later that day she wrote and co-produced what was to
become New York City's new official anthem, Empire State Of Mind.  In 2010, Angela went on to
win her first Grammy for the Best Rap Duo for Empire State Of Mind, a record that has placed
her squarely in music history.

The next step for Angela will be the upcoming independent release of her debut artist album
early next year.  As Angela points out, it will be "inspired by all the different genres of music
I've worked on and my love for hip hop and politics will result in an album full of very controversial
subjects and a brand new sound with fusions of music from all over the world".  She follows
that statement with this sentiment, "I've seen and learned so much musically, it felt only right to
share this music".

Stay tuned for more information on this highly anticipated release!
