Living Things Reveal Music Video for New Song "Har Megiddo"
Los
Angeles' rock-band Living Things recently penned a brand new song, "Har
Megiddo," and have just released a powerful art-house style music video
for the song. The video was directed by Floria Sigismondi (The White
Stripes, The Cure, Interpol), who also directed the band's "Pollen Path" music video. You can watch the censored version of the video at the link below:
Lead-singer
Lillian Berlin stressed the importance of symbolism and how the song
and video function as stark social criticism. "I have been lyrically
inspired over that last year by Futurist Ray Kurzweil and the philosophy
of the "Singularity" which deals with the idea of machine taking over
man. The rate we are moving with technology, there will be a day when
our computerized devices will out-smart us, think the 2001 [A Space Oddyssey]
"Hal" character." This relationship between man and technology is
explored in the video as a violent sexual connection, contrasting the
two while highlighting a vision of human dependence upon technology as
growth. Berlin goes on to question this dependence, "Why are we choosing
to rely on machines rather than pushing our own physical, intellectual
and spiritual development further? In our video for "Har Megiddo" we
display the obvious, we are moving towards an era where interaction with
one another in the flesh is becoming meaningless."
The
St. Louis four-piece recently held a special performance for the Occupy
Los Angeles protesters, rocking out in the heart of Los Angeles at City
Hall. About the performance, lead-singer Lillian Berlin had a lot to
say. "With endless reality shows for society to plug into, I think the
"Gangbanksters" of Wall St. were hoping the 99% would sit quietly as
they ran the world. Hell no! Globally the people of every generation
are fed up, and are taking action," Lillian exclaimed. "It is inspiring
to see Occupy LA building in numbers daily, and was energizing to
perform in the heart of it at City Hall this weekend." Above you can see
a photo of the band performing at Occopy LA.
Living
Things consists of three brothers, Lillian, Yves and Joshua " Bosh"
Berlin, along with childhood friend Cory Becker. They have been playing
together in a band since grade school. As young kids, the Berlin
brothers piled into their father's Chevy wagon and traveled up and down
the Midwest performing politically driven punk songs inspired by their
mother's long rants about feminism, the abuse of authority, and Jerry
Springer culture. Rolling Stone noted that "Living Things are a band of fighters determined to make us all feel like winners," while Spin Magazine
hailed "the strength of Living Things is not the defiant
antiestablishment fist pumping (though there is plenty) but the tunes!"
Similarly, USA today rained praise upon the band's "contagious defiance
and swaggering garage-rock might."
Living Things are currently working on a new project they are planning to unveil in 2012.
