Silver Snakes Bio:
We’re in uncharted territory right now -- when any group of
kids with a pair of Ray Bans, sporting tank tops emblazoned with big neon
writing, and musical touchstones that go back no further than Blink 182 is now
considered a punk band.
It’s more than a little refreshing then that the guys in the
LA-based group SILVER SNAKES can not only name check bands like AT THE DRIVE
and QUICKSAND as musical influences, but can actually play songs that would fit
quite nicely in a crate of vinyl alongside those same bands at any point in the
early 90’s.
Officially christened in 2010, the band’s origin story goes
back years earlier when frontman/guitarist Alex Estrada began writing many of
the songs that would make it on their debut while still a member of the band CATHEDRALS.
Having pulled in drummer Daniel Pouliot, guitarist Jeremiah Bignell and bassist
Mike Trujillo to join his new crew, the foursome took to task building up a
collection of catchy post-hardcore songs that manage to pay just as much
attention to the lyrics as they do to the blissfully steady guitars and rhythm
section.
With the songs that would eventually make it onto Pictures
of a Floating World close to complete, the group called on genre veterans and
fellow musicians Steve Choi of RX BANDITS to produce the record and Roger
Camero of NO MOTIV to mix and engineer the tracks. The album built a steady
amount of buzz thanks to constant touring and undeniably great songs. So much
so that the tastemakers at the influential indie label Animal Style Records are
set to rerelease Pictures of a Floating World on a limited run of colored
vinyl. The label is also digitally releasing two new singles “Loom” and
“Circles” as Old Light.
The result, not to get too crazy with superlative statements
here, manages to remind us that punk rock - regardless of what prefix or suffix
you put next to it - is much more than trendy haircuts and gimmicky songs, but
a legitimate movement that helped to define a generation fed up with being
ignored. The lads in SILVER SNAKES, it appears, are picking up that frayed,
spray painted flag for yet another generation. Don’t believe me? Check them out
for yourself: they’ll be playing a series of shows with Aeges this summer,
along with sets at the Sound & Fury and The Fest.
