JD McPherson Confirms Fall Tour; Daytrotter 8/15, World Cafe Live 8/22

“NORTH SIDE GAL” VIDEO CLOSING IN ON 800,000 VIEWS

“...he and his bandmates are great musicians taking ownership of a sound, not just mimicking one.” —Washington Post

“McPherson delivers a dozen straight ahead, no-nonsense R&B rockers on Signs and Signifiers, all with an eye on rock and roll’s formative decade.”—Utne Reader

“The show has a throw-back to the ‘oldies’ style of rock while the quintet filled out the sound bringing
a refreshing energy to what could have sounded dated.”—Creative Loafing

“…attracting quite a buzz with his take on classic rhythm & blues on the cusp of transforming into rock ’n’ roll…”—Nashville Scene

Oklahoma-based JD McPherson and his band, who continue to bring “a sound that is vibrantly reminiscent of ‘50s after hour dancehall hits mixed with angsty tunes that appease the most brooding bluesman” (Yahoo! Music), confirm a run of fall dates that includes stops in Chicago, Kansas City, St. Louis, Cleveland, Detroit and Indianapolis.

Signs and Signifiers (Rounder Records) continues to garner accolades for its “timeless, forward-thinking rock & roll” (Rolling Stone) that “is destined to satisfy traditional American rock ‘n’ roll and R&B purists” (KCRW). Live performances by McPherson, who “sounds like the soul-searching brother of Little Richard when he sings” (Boston Globe), can be enjoyed at Daytrotter August 15 (http://bit.ly/PmVcBq), WXPN World Café Live August 22, and Mountain Stage October 7. His self-directed video for “North Side Gal” is closing in on 800,000 views – (http://bit.ly/a6OsqT).

Featuring JD McPherson (lead and backing vocals, guitar), Jimmy Sutton (bass), and Alex Hall (drums, piano, organ), the album was recorded through a collection of vintage microphones into an old 1960’s Berlant ¼-inch tape machine. The 12-track album kicks off with the fervent pulse of the first single, “North Side Gal,” and segues into one of the albums two covers, McPherson’s take on “Country Boy,” an old R&B number originally written and recorded by Tiny Kennedy.

Hailing from Broken Arrow, OK, the former art teacher traveled to Chicago to record Signs and Signifiers at Hi-Style studio, which is housed in the attic of producer/bassist/studio owner Jimmy Sutton’s home and is 100% analog. “I have recorded this style of music in the digital realm, and it just doesn’t quite ‘sing’ as much. Slamming that ¼-inch tape really hard produced the most beautiful distortion I’ve ever heard,” says McPherson.
