Armed with their signature doubleneck bass/guitar, an
arsenal of pedals, acoustic and electronic drums and their new album, Transitions(due November
6 on Fake Record Label), instrumental duo El Ten
Eleven will embark on a six week tour this fall. The cross country run
will kick off in Tucson onOctober 10 and make
stops in 31 cities, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, DC,
Atlanta, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Austin,
where they will perform at the Fun Fun Fun Fest on November
2. All shows are on sale as of today and any ticket purchased by August
24 (excluding Fun Fun Fun Fest) will come with a free pre-release
download of Transitions on October 2, a week
before the tour begins. All tour dates and corresponding ticket links are
below.
El Ten Eleven's Kickstarter, which
launched just last week, has exceeded its goal by nearly four times the amount
and still has eight days to go. Fans can pre-order the forthcoming single "Yellow
Bridges (out September 11),"Transitions and purchase some
premiums like a limited edition lithograph, autographed vinyl copy of the
record, music lessons from the guys or a helicopter ride and lunch with Dunn, a
licensed pilot:http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/226706964/new-album-from-el-ten-eleven
Watching El Ten Eleven build their pulsing, circuitous
instrumentals from the ground up is truly a mesmerizing experience and anyone
who has ever seen the duo can attest that guitarist/bassist Kristian
Dunn and drummer Tim Fogarty are two of the hardest
working musicians around. Sure, it would be a lot easier to play to
pre-recorded material or add in a third, fourth or even fifth member but that
wouldn't be as fun. Instead, Dunn wields a doubleneck bass/guitar (sometimes
playing both simultaneously with different hands) and a fretless bass and loops
himself live while he dances on a phalanx of looping and effects pedals.
Fogarty pounds his drum kit and electronic drum pads and occasionally loops
himself. As layer upon layer of guitars and bass are stacked on top of each
other and interlocked with Fogarty's propulsive percussion, the duo's songs
evolve from simple guitar riffs to technically complex yet highly melodic jams
that make people bob their heads and scratch them at the same time.
Transitions, the band's fifth studio album, was
recorded and produced by El Ten Eleven and features seven tracks that
encapsulate the life-changing events (divorce, marriage, birth, moving to different
cities) that have been happening to the pair over the last couple of years. The
LP is filled with the band's trademark guitar trickery, mesmerizing looping,
shape-shifting tempos, intricate time signatures and melodic pop arrangements
but also features them experimenting with new sonics, hip-hop drum beats and
longer song structures, as evidenced on the title track.
