Prince Rama

In order to afford their fans a sneak peek of their forthcoming record, Trust Now, before its release date, Prince Rama recently launched a video series in which their musical friends perform karaoke versions of the songs from the new album.  Participants for the series will be unveiled as the videos are released, but rest assured that the band has an impressive group of luminaries enlisted for the remainder of the project.  The series launched recently via The Fader blog, with G. Lucas Crane of Woods performing the Trust Now track "Incarnation," apparently in a room with very low ceilings.  The second installment featured Sierra Leone's Janka Nabay performing "Summer Of Love."  Today the third installment, featuring Damon McMahon of Amen Dunes doing "Golden Silence" went live, as well as the official music video for "Golden Silence." The band has also announced extended tour dates this Fall with Indian Jewelry in addition to their previously announced run with Gang Gang Dance.

Bio:
Drawing from a collective mine of times and spaces, Prince Rama (made up of sisters Taraka and Nimai Larson) takes the threads of ancient symbolism and ritual and weaves a surreal universe that is wholly their own.  Their often-unpredictable live shows graze the space between psychedelic ceremony, performance art and initiation rite.
Trust Now, their 5th full-length album and 2nd album to be released on Paw Tracks was born out of this fantastic ritual space.  Spawned from the vernal heat of the Florida swamps amidst swirling patterns of pine orchards and pre-Columbian artifacts, Prince Rama was whispered into the ears of Taraka Larson, Nimai Larson, and Michael Collins in the summer of 2007 by the clanging of prayer bells and goat-skin drums.  They left the Hare Krishna farm where they were living to attend art school and form a creative nucleus in Boston.  The visceral, devotional and raw "Threshold Dances" and "Zetland" were released as the culminations of those early collaborations.  At this time Taraka also began working for the controversial visionary artist Paul Laffoley, and inspired by his architectural diagrams of utopic space, composed Architecture of Utopia.

After a series of extensive tours (one of which resulted in a tragic car robbery where all their equipment got stolen), the trio moved to Brooklyn, rebuilt themselves from the ground up and wrote Shadow Temple, produced with the help of Avey Tare and Deakin of Animal Collective and released on Paw Tracks in September 2010.
A few months later, Michael Collins took a hiatus from the band and the two sisters went on to refine and reinvent their sound through the recording of Trust Now, recorded in a 19th century church with Scott Colburn (Sun City Girls, Animal Collective, Arcade Fire).  Just this past year Prince Rama was also chosen to be artists in residence at Issue Project Room in Brooklyn, where they currently reside and continue their exploration of the link between music and utopia, conducting group exorcisms to the score of old VHS workout music and re-staging apocalypses through chopped and screwed pop songs.

"... The Apologist is the same but different; the same wonky, jazzy, proggy via post-hardcore East of the Wall-isms that made Ressentiment (and its predecessor Farmer’s Almanac) so endearing, but done in new ways, evolved to the next level, more ambitious." - MetalSucks

"It’s progressive metal in the truest sense of the word. This album is as raw and musically uncompromising as they come." - Alternative Matter

Rob Crow's "Build" Streaming Now; New Album He Thinks He's People Out October 18

Temporary Residence Ltd Streaming Rob Crow's "Build"
Limited Number Of Downloads Available
New Album He Thinks He's People In Stores October 18
Rob Crow is back after a four-year wait with his latest solo effort, He Thinks He's People. Out October 18 on Temporary Residence Ltd, the label is streaming “Build” from the upcoming record on its Soundcloud page, which you can find here. Continuing its series of limited-release downloads from the album, there are only 100 available of "Build", so be sure to grab one before they are gone!
More dynamic and eclectic than its predecessor, He Thinks He's People marries Crow 's penchant for drawing inspiration from a variety of genres with an uncanny ability to create a subtle, relaxing mood throughout. This is likely attributed to his remarkable voice, a trademark that has helped make Pinback an institution for the past decade. The ease and sincerity with which he delivers lines as wrought as "Sometimes, just hope is the trap" – or playfully revels in the morbid demise of people who talk on their cell phones during movies – is what make Crow truly one-of-a-kind, and a shining light who continues to thrive on the outer edges of pop music.

Butcher the Bar

Announces European Dates with Death Cab For Cutie"...one talented musician. His no frills style of performance allow his stories to take the spotlight, backed by simple, well-crafted melodies on stripped down instrumentation...definitely a hidden gem." - The Fader
Watch the Video for "Alpha Street West" at Vimeo (Available to Post)

Manchester UK artist Butcher The Bar (aka Joel Nicholson) has debuted a brand new, gravity-defying video for "Alpha Street West," taken from his newest Morr Music release, For Each A Future Tethered. The video comes just in time for a European tour with select dates supporting Death Cab For Cutie. Ben Gibbard first discovered Nicholson's songs earlier this year and started recommending them on the band's Twitter. A few months later he asked Nicholson to join them on the road.

Butcher The Bar gave us insight into his deepest thoughts three years ago with his debut, Sleep At Your Own Speed, an album that dealt with the uncertainties of growing up - recorded in the intimate light of his bedroom.
In For Each A Future Tethered he shares his personal story with wispy serene vocals and creative arrangements.  There is a wider range of musical accompaniment, with the inclusion of trumpets, clarinets, harmoniums and pianos, resulting in a richer, more developed sound. The music is somewhat reminiscent of label mates Seabear, but his earnest songwriting is true to the tradition of great songwriters like Nick Drake, Paul Simon and Elliott Smith.

GODS AND QUEENS: Fall European Tour Confirmed; Three Releases Now Streaming

GODS AND QUEENS: Fall European Tour Confirmed
Three Releases Now Streaming

Philadelphia-based indie bandits GODS AND QUEENS have confirmed a new date European tour, set to take place through most of November and into December, with twenty-five shows confirmed at press time. Having already toured Europe four times since 2009 -- three of the trips fully self-booked -- this latest venture sees the band again taking their angular, nonconformist rock and unpredictable live show to European fans, invading underworld venues they’ve antagonized previously as well as new scenes.

GODS AND QUEENS have almost been killed driving off a cliff in the Massif Central region of France, accidentally stabbed their European driver early this year, resulting in 38 stitches, and once finished a five-week tour of Europe with a broken-footed drummer. Besides headlining several of their own DIY-booked Euro tours, they’ve also toured stateside with Coliseum, Blacklisted, Young Widows and more. Their live shows consist of a raucous blend of volume and seriousness, blatant antagonism aimed directly towards the audience, or ditching their own songs mid-set to play the entire Land Speed record by HĂ¼sker DĂ¼.

The GODS AND QUEENS lineup is led by guitar/vocals Jamie Getz (ex-Lickgoldensky, ex-Versoma), joined by bassist Ben Roysden (Fire In the Hearts And Minds) and drummer Jeff Ziga (Armalite, Affirmative Action Jackson). Existing in their own musical purgatory -- too heavy to be an idie rock band, yet too indie rock to be a heavy band -- they play noisy, melodic rock, not far off from, and directly influenced by 1990′s stalwarts Unwound, Lowercase, June Of 44, Lush or Lungfish, yet they mostly get booked on metal shows. With releases out via Robotic Empire, Adagio830 and Sons Of Vesta, all records in the GODS AND QUEENS catalog are Untitled, and all of their song titles are "Untitled" followed by a number. Stream all three Untitled records now on their Bandcamp page.

LA dubpunks SWAHILI BLONDE prep new full-length for November; premiere tripped-out video on LA Times

LA dubpunks SWAHILI BLONDE prep new full-length for November; premiere tripped-out video on LA Times
Psycho Tropical Ballet Pink due in November on Neurotic Yell Records; October Residency at The Echo in LA begins Monday
VIDEO: Purple Ink
(via LA Times)
Directed by Burke Roberts
LISTEN: Purple Ink
"There are Saharan desert blues licks that barely snag onto the backbeat; smatterings of filtered-out percussion that could come from the Caribbean in the distant future or from bombed-out East Berlin in the '80s; and enough reverb to drown midsize animals." - LA Times
"ESG meets Rolling Thunder Revue-era Dylan–minimalist punk-funk blown out with troubadour violins and face painted flare" - RCRD LBL
Basing songs around cryptic shout-outs and jittery backings styled around the Slits, were their dub reggae teachings replaced by a schooling around New York’s original No Wave scene, Swahili Blonde almost make a point of never settling into a holding pattern. - The Line Of Best Fit
Alternating between tightly-wound and loosely fluid, the Los Angeles group Swahili Blonde tastefully mine the legacy of No Wave, Dub, Krautrock, and Post-Punk creating a sound that is immediately playful and fun, but also futuristic; revealing it's complexity and new layers upon repeated listens. From the ashes of the rawkus now-defunct LA dub-punks WEAVE!, Swahili Blonde was formed in 2009 when former WEAVE! drummer and vocalist, Nicole Turley, started experimenting in her studio; creating unconventional dubby art-rock arrangements while giving a recorded voice to paralleled realities, vibrant visuals, and delightfully mismatched rhythms and patterns. Since then, Swahili Blonde has become a reputed dynamic and engaging live act, as an 8-piece band featuring members of The Like, Dante Vs Zombies, Corridor, WEAVE!, and DEVO.
Swahili Blonde's new album Psycho Tropical Ballet Pink is a trippier, more percussive counterpart to 2010's debut Man Meat, which tapped into a scrappier punk spirit (a la Raincoats and The Slits). Their new record contains loads of surprises: Caribbean influences, sideways grooves, doo-wop vocal harmonies, and earworm-y instrumental interplay, while flourishing with the use of orchestral horns and strings. On Psycho Tropical Ballet Pink' s opener "Etoile De Mer", it's clear that the band is exploring new directions with a track that takes the rhythmic pulse of their previous work and submerges it underwater. "Zelda Has It" takes things even deeper marrying angular funk with spooky atmospheres. Things emerge from the visceral underwater seascape on their soaring cover of A-Ha's "Scoundrel Days" before launching into "Purple Ink" suggesting a Beefheart-ian approach to deconstructing the 99 Records catalog, with its stop-starts, spiraling guitar melodies, and polyrhythmic sense of timing. The album closes out with the driving synth dub instrumental "Science Is Magick" and the spaced out "The Golden Corale" where strings sweep over galloping percussion.
Accented by guest performances throughout the album from Laena Geronimo (violin), Brad Caulkins (sax), and John Frusciante (guitar), Psycho Tropical Ballet Pink consistently keeps the listener on their toes with John Cale-esque violin shrieks, shimmering guitars, sitar, even Tijuana Brass horns. While unpredictable, Turley's realized vision is unified by its homage to Swahili Blonde's dub/punk/funk influences filtered thru today's anything-goes post-global lens, and the result is a fascinating album from one of the most interesting bands to emerge from Southern California in recent memory.

Announce October US Tour Dates and Special Appearances w/ Hatebreed, Comeback Kid, We Are The Union and More
November - December US Tour w/ Very Special Guest To Be Named Shortly
Debut Album "The Language That We Speak" Out Now on No Sleep Records!

In support of their debut album, "The Language That We Speak" released this Spring on No Sleep Records, Iowa's Former Thieves have announced a string of US tour dates taking place this October, including select special appearances with Hatebreed, Comeback Kid, We Are The Union and more, followed by a massive two-month tour with a very special guest to be named soon, as well as Vanna, The Crimson Armada, and Listener, taking place this November and December throughout the majority of the continental US.

Coming from the barren and simple fields of Iowa, Former Thieves have created a pummeling new record that personifies the feelings and emotions of coming from nothing and fighting the entire way to what they have created. "The Language That We Speak" takes the listener through a thorough commentary on the frustration of Midwestern life. Articulate, sharp, and sincerely pissed.

Recorded December 1st through 10th 2010 at The Red Room in Seattle, WA with Chris Common (Mastodon, The Sword) at the helm, No Sleep Records released "The Language That We Speak" on April 19th 2011. The record is available on CD, vinyl, and digital formats and recalls the sounds made famous by the likes of Converge, Botch, Coalesce, and Modern Life Is War while maintaining its own unique formula.

THE POSTELLES TO SUPPORT THE KOOKS
ON FALL NORTH AMERICAN TOUR

"SOUND THE ALARMS," FROM THE POSTELLES'
SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM, USED IN ABC'S "REVENGE" AND
EA SPORTS' NEED FOR SPEED THE RUN

TOUR WITH THE WOMBATS KICKS OFF OCTOBER 19th

The Postelles will support The Kooks on the first leg of the U.K. band's upcoming North American tour, beginning with a show at the Trocadero in Philadelphia on November 15th and including two sold-out nights at Webster Hall in New York City (11/16, 17). Prior to The Kooks dates, The Postelles will be the main supporting act on The Wombats' entire U.S. tour, which launches with a CMJ show at Webster Hallon October 19th and concludes at the Crocodile CafĂ© in Seattle on November 12th. The Postelles, who recently performed at Atlanta's Music Midtown Festival (with Coldplay, The Black Keys) and Dave Matthews Band Caravan's stop at New York City's Randall's Island, will also be playing numerous headline shows and festivals between now and the end of the year. See below for itinerary.

In a recent live review, the LA Weekly observed: "[The Postelles] delivered a high-energy, highly-danceable set...laying on the hooks and melodies thick and with unquestionable confidence" while Flavorpill.com praised their "killer live show" and VanityFair.com urged: "everyone go see them on tour."

Numerous tracks have already been licensed from The Postelles' self-titled debut album, which was produced by the band and The Strokes' Albert Hammond, Jr. "Sound The Alarms" was heard in last week's season premiere of ABC's "Revenge" and has also been tapped for EA Sport's new Need For Speed The Run video game, which will be released in November. "White Night" was used in Fox's "Raising Hope" and the CW's "Vampire Diaries" and "90210" while lead single "123 Stop" was heard in the trailer for the film How Do You Know, which starred Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson and Jack Nicholson.

"Songs like 'Stella' and '123 Stop' are high-energy power pop," said Relix while the New York Post put "Boy's Best Friend" on its list of summer "songs that sizzle." "The Postelles sound like the wound-up early hours of what will be a long Saturday night on the town," observed Rolling Stone. "There are elements of both mod and punk, but The Postelles have a sneering attitude all their own." SPIN praised their "hooked-at-the-gills, head-bobbing rock'n'roll groove" while Blurt noted: "The four-piece is defined by their simplicity, featuring straightforward hooks reminiscent of a bygone era of rock 'n' roll."

The Postelles followed the June release of their full-length album with Summer Undercovers in July. The free digital EP featured covers of The Smith's "Ask," Joe Jones' "California Sun," Wreckless Eric's "Whole Wide World" and The Ramones' "Beat on The Brat."

Formed in high school, The Postelles - comprising Daniel Balk (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), David Dargahi (vocals/lead guitar), John Speyer (bass) and Billy Cadden (percussion) - began playing shows around Manhattan when they were high school seniors. On the strength of theirWhite Night EP, also co-produced by Albert Hammond, Jr., they toured with Kings of Leon, Vampire Weekend, Interpol, The Kills, The Wombats and Free Energy. They've played such major festivals such as Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo (twice), All Points West and Iceland Airwaves, performed at The Who Tribute Concert at New York City's Carnegie Hall and recently supported the legendary Chuck Berry.
