The Clean have always been a band that makes music whenever they happen to find themselves in the same place. This method of on-again/off-again recording as The Clean suits David, Robert & Hamish's creative desires and keeps them clear of the machinery that threatened to interfere with that process from the moment they threatened to get awfully popular awfully quickly twenty-five years ago.
Having just finished a tour for his 2007 solo album, The Far Now, David thought it would be a great idea to bring Robert to New York do some brainstorming with Hamish. While in New York, they played a critically hailed 3-night residency at Cake Shop that will definitely be among those "you-just-had-to-be-there" NYC shows! Robert and David hung out in the Brooklyn basement of a friend's apartment and wrote "quite a lot of music." The Clean recorded some of these new song ideas at Marlborough Farms with Ladybug Transistor's Gary Olson. A few months later, the trio united again to record with engineer Tex Houston in (yet another) basement of an old church in one of the oldest areas of inner city Dunedin.
David described the experience:
"We also called on some friends to help us out like Alan Starrett on viola and and Haunted Love on backing vocals who all did wonderful work. Look out for Haunted Love, coming to a town near you soon, I'm sure! We spent months sending Hamish the mixes to get his feedback and input. Eventually we baked it! I think its your usual eclectic bunch of tracks but somehow I think this one holds together as an LP as opposed just a collection of songs/instrumentals. Maybe the basement theme helped that along? Who knows? I have no idea why or how The Clean works, but it just IS, I guess."
