Bahamas: Paste Track Premiere, Fall Tour Dates Confirmed, Bahamas Is Afie Out August 19 on Brushfire

“His voice and his guitar playing merge with a lush beauty.”—NPR “Fresh Air”

“A sublime, incomparable leading man, one with a soulful, sweet and stylish touch
in his song-writing.”—Globe and Mail

“Bahamas distills his brand of breezy soul…with summer-ready falsettoharmonies that float over a distorted riff, before ending with a quick solo, a move that reminds this laid back Canuck can shred.” —SPIN

Brushfire Records confirms new fall tour dates from Afie Jurvanen, who performs as Bahamas.  The track “Stronger Than That” from the upcoming August 19 release, Bahamas Is Afie, was praised by Paste as being “more Jurvanen’s own that any other previous works; it marks his first self-produced released.” Listen to the newly released track via Soundcloud HERE and on Paste HERE. Of the song, Jurvanen said “The album was more or less finished when we decided to go back in and cut this track,” and “It’s a song about believing in someone, someone who doesn’t really believe in themselves. It’s about encouragement, which is something I think we could often use more of.”  See North American fall tour dates below.

This new release follows  2011’s Barachords, which The Guardian praised as containing “stripped-down harmony-brushed songs with gorgeous hooks and without a wasted note.” Jurvanen sought to create and produce a more developed arrangement of strings, brass, winds, orchestral percussion, and chamber choruses on Bahamas Is Afie. Prior to this record, Jurvanen’s releases have all been sparsely recorded bedroom records with this new album marking a transition to a more complex and fully arranged collection of music. “The songs seem to have a definitive quality to them,” claims Jurvanen, “and they ended up going to all kinds of unexpected musical places for me. I really thought I was going to make a traditional folk record, but as the recording evolved, I started having some pretty different ideas...It all came together in a simple, naive and direct way and I was really energized by the process.”
Jurvanen’s debut album Pink Strat was released in 2009. The record was nominated for both a Juno Award and the Polaris Music Prize. Bahamas hit the road for two years after the release touring with artists such as Wilco and Robert Plant. In 2011 he released Barachords, which was nominated for two Juno Awards including Adult Alternative Album of the Year and Songwriter of The Year and was named Best Singer/Songwriter Album of 2012 by iTunes. Wall Street Journal praised the record as “bluesy and hypnotic,” and The Los Angeles Times called “A delightfully rare kind of record that commands an instant replay.”
