Verve Records will release Moving On, the full-length debut from KAN WAKAN, on June 3. The Los Angeles-based band recorded the collection with engineers Darrell Thorp (Radiohead, Gnarls Barkley, Atoms for Peace) and Tom Elmhirst (Arcade Fire, Beck, The Black Keys). It was mastered by Bob Ludwig (Radiohead, The Rolling Stones, Daft Punk). Moving On will be released in the U.K. on May 5 by Virgin EMI. See below for track listing.
The video for the album's leadoff track and first single, "Forever Found," premiered recently at SPIN.com, which observed, "Kan Wakan combine deep soul, dramatic folk, and orchestral pop for a noir-kissed sound that could re-score a vintage James Bond flick with ease and grace." The clip can be seen here. The evocative song found an early fan in Jason Bentley, who played "Forever Found" every day for a straight week on "Morning Becomes Eclectic," airing on influential Los Angeles public radio station KCRW.
KAN WAKAN, which just wrapped up a month-long residency at the Echoplex in Los Angeles, will perform at the Echoplex/Origami/Spaceland presents showcase at SXSW on Wednesday, March 12. The band will also perform at the Universal Music Group, Highroad Touring, KCRW and Filter showcases. KAN WAKAN just played a show with Dr. Dog and Bob Mould at Noise Pop in San Francisco and also performed at FADER's CMJ party 2013. The group has also played dates with such artists as Other Lives, Big Black Delta, and Niki & The Dove. KAN WAKAN recently appeared on "Last Call with Carson Daly." All tour dateshere.
USA Today praised the group's "lush, cinematic pop" while Los Angeles Magazine observed, "The songs on the LP vacillate between grandiose orchestral arrangements that could have come from an Ennio Morricone soundtrack and a subtle electronic minimalism, all stitched together by singer Kristianne Bautista's soulful vocals." "Delicately ethereal indie pop" is how the LA Weekly described KAN WAKAN and Buzzbands LAhailed the band's debut EP as "riveting," naming it the #1 EP of 2013.
KAN WAKAN emerged in early 2012 as the musical brainchild of composer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Gueorgui I. Linev. The Bulgarian-born musician originally set out to create solely instrumental music inspired by his lifelong passion for classical minimalism, but the involvement of chanteuse Kristianne Bautista and producer/guitarist Peter Potyondy inspired the project to grow in both scope and purpose.
Since then they have dubbed themselves with the Tagalog inspired abstraction, "KAN WAKAN." The trio was abetted by Ian Anderson (bass), Dannon Rampton (violin) and Jesse Aumiller (keyboards, saxophone), all of whom helped bring the bold sonic vision for the live show to full fruition. The Metamorphosis Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Linev'suncle, Bulgarian Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra music director/conductor Stefan Linev, contribute the sumptuous strings heard on the album. At the forefront is Bautista's powerful, provocative voice - described by Linev as not unlike "the lead instrument in an orchestra" - which conveys remarkable levels of romantic nuance and human complexity.
