"On the EP’s lead single, “Smells Like Rain,” she blends a cathartic rock melody with a series of vocal acrobatics to create a song that evokes vaguely middle-eastern sounds while still sounding as though her feet are firmly planted within indie rock’s fertile soil.  Haunting string harmonies and percussive blasts combine to form the platform from which her powerful voice leaps like a diver into the swells of layered instrumentation.   There are moments when the song pulls back to reveal a skeletal frame, where only a stringed instrument and vocal harmonics interweave to form beautiful and icy rhythms.  But these are short-lived as the song repeatedly gathers and expels musical crescendos that carry the listener along on a wave of tonal release."

Based in Los Angeles, Bhavana Reddy (daughter and principal disciple of world renowned Indian dancing couple Drs. Raja and Radha Reddy) is about to release her self-produced debut EP Tangled In Emotions, in February of 2014. The EP reflects the work of prominent engineers including John Would (engineer on Fiona Apple’s 2012 Grammy-Nominated album) and Reuben Cohen, from Lurssen Mastering (Slumdog Millionaire, Game of Thrones, Snoop Dogg).
 

In addition, the EP boasts phenomenal guest musicians, including percussionist Blair Shotts (Rihanna, Drake, Adam Lambert), tablist Salar Nader (Lil’ John, Shaggy) and violinist Ray Suen (Flaming Lips, Mariachi El Bronx) to do justice to the complexities of an eastern-western blend of cultures.
 

Bhavana’s music is an interesting blend of the Indian concept of melodies and the western concept of harmony held by a string of poetry. Her melodies, chosen from the 72 parent ragas (scales) of Indian Carnatic music sung to chords/harmonies of blues/ jazz/pop/rock/folk influence, create an exotic neo-psychedelic vibe with strong emotional vocals. Her music has been described as a melting pot of eastern and western genres with hints of Fiona Apple, Kimbra, Dirty Projectors, and Led Zeppelin. Her performances are visually in sync with theatrical/story telling nature of Kuchipudi dance. As a whole, Bhavana’s music plays with the essence of rich Indian heritage in a language known to you.

She began intensive training in classical Indian dance under her parents and gurus, Padmabhushans Drs. Raja and Radha Reddy. Along with them she has represented Kuchipudi dance in the prestigious Republic Day celebrations (New Delhi) in the presence of the country’s President, Prime Minister and other diplomats. Bhavana represented India at the Shreyasi International Dance Festival, New Delhi and Hyderabad, amongst other stalwarts namely Paul Taylor Dance Company from New York, Kremlin Ballet from Russia and Jose Porcel from Spain. She has also performed for dignitaries including various Prime Ministers, Presidents of India, Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, Members of Parliament as well as legends such as Pt. Ravi Shankar & George Harrison’s wife Olivia Harrison.
 

As a member of the celebrated Reddy dancing family, Bhavana has been bred on dance, music, art and academics. While pursuing a Bachelor in Commerce Honors degree at Lady Sri Ram College for Women, she realized her true passion for music and was recognized/awarded at various college solo and band competitions. Shortly after, Bhavana left for Musicians Institute, Los Angeles, where she was awarded “Outstanding Project” award, by the Musicians Institute, Independent Artist Program at the Saban Theater during her graduation ceremony in March 2013.
 

Bhavana is backed by a cross-cultural band; namely Dennis Nilsson on drums, Kevin Lambertucci on bass, and many more friends. The track “Smells Like Rain” was jointly written by Reddy, Nilsson and Jonas Blomqvist.
