Esperanza Plantation is thrilled to announce the long-awaited release from El Obo. Oxford Basement Collection will be released tomorrow, May 10th.

El Obo is the solo side-project of Colour Revolt frontman Jesse Coppenbarger, created in 2004 as an outlet for his accumulated material that did not quite fit the “loud rock band” mold of his full time outfit. The debut El Obo record, Oxford Basement Collection, is finally seeing the light of day, fresh on the heels of Colour Revolt’s acclaimed 2010 album, The Cradle. Oxford Basement Collection is the culmination of several years of sporadic songwriting and recording that occurred in multiple studios with the assistance of numerous friends/musicians (including Steven Bevilaqua of Flight on guitar and Jr. Kimbrough’s son Kinney on drums) who stepped in at various stages of the project to contribute to Jesse’s overall vision.

Tracks like the haunting “Young Ones” and the endearing first single “Vrgn Evl” are timeless in nature and clearly lift the El Obo material up as some of the greatest in the Coppenbarger canon. “On The Eighth Day” echoes themes of religion Coppenbarger has touched on throughout his recorded output, and “JC vs. the DRs” embodies what Coppenbarger does best --- sonic experimentation paired with classic songwriting, in the tradition of artists like Sparklehorse and Red House Painters. Fans of gentler Colour Revolt tracks like “Moses of the South” and “A New Family” will appreciate these kindred tunes that focus on Jesse’s impressive vocal range and seasoned singer/songwriter capabilities.

The El Obo moniker serves as a tool of artistic liberation for Coppenbarger, and the 10 songs that make up Oxford Basement Collection show him pushing boundaries and exploring themes undiscovered within the Colour Revolt material. It is of course not a new idea or concept for the leader of a rock band to want to reveal a different side of himself. However, this debut goes a step further, by introducing the listener to a solo artist completely detached from the sound and aesthetic of his full band gig, who obviously has much more to say through the voice of music.

Oxford Basement Collection is a “deluxe edition” LP/CD release, and the enclosed CD contains three bonus tracks not included on the vinyl or available digitally. Jesse will be performing a rare El Obo set at Grimey's in Nashville, tomorrow, May 10th at 6pm cst. to celebrate the release.
