Wye Oak's Jenn Wasner explores the "threads" running through relationships in The Knot
The Knot started out as a collection of songs with no conscious connection and over time the unifying theme appeared. Principle lyricist, Jenn Wasner found herself contemplating the many different kinds of relationships in her life both positive and negative. All of the threads tying into a knot: watching friends fall in love, the complexities of parental bonds and, and other examples of the different ways those we love deal with the people in their lives.
With song titles like "Siamese," "Tattoo," and "Talking About Money," images of those hard decisions and conversations we deal with in our daily relationships are immediately called to mind. Jenn says, "My habit of impulsive decision making fueled by a constant fear of being struck down hasn't steered me wrong yet!"
The last song on the album, "Sight, Flight," was written to serve as a summary track for the album. Jenn describes it as "the period at the end of the sentence." Her lyrics don't tell a clear story, instead they conjure up an image that suggests a story for the listener, challenging us all to discover the threads that make up the knots in our own lives.
