Bahamas: "Bahamas is Afie" out Brushfire Records, New dates w/ Jack Johnson & Wilco

“His voice and his guitar playing merge with a lush beauty.”—NPR “Fresh Air”

“Blessed with an amiably husky voice, Jurvanen unfurls elegant melodies amid intelligent, economical arrangements”
Uncut, 8 out of 10

“There’s always something more rewarding about those albums that require a closer listen, a bit more attention and focus to make their full impact. In 2014, focus is ever harder to come by so the reward is greater.
This is a joyous heart filling 2 ½ minute pop song.”—KCRW

“It’s only fitting that on an album with a self-assuring title like Bahamas is Afie, the musician would begin to experiment and show us another side of his genius.”—CBC Music

“… the new album is more Jurvanen’s own that any other previous work”—Paste

“It’s a masterpiece and my favorite for album of the year.”—Daytrotter

“Bahamas distills his brand of breezy soul…with summer-ready falsetto harmonies that float over a distorted riff, before ending with a quick solo,a move that reminds this laid back Canuck can shred.”—SPIN

“…Jurvanen attributes the imaginative tune’s twangy tone to musical irony, adding that he’d love to do a full country album someday.”—CMT Edge

Bahamas is Afie, the new album from Afie Jurvanen, who performs as Bahamas, is out now on Brushfire Records. Bahamas recently performed live on “Morning Becomes Eclectic” at KCRW, check out the KCRW performance via KCRW HERE. Additionally, Bahamas has confirmed August tour dates with Jack Johnson as well as September dates with Wilco. See full North American fall headlining tour dates below with sold out shows in Toronto, Victoria and Chicago.

Bahamas recently shared the new video “Bahamas is Afie…(And Russ).” Paste says, “The video follows Afie Jurvanen and comrade/food extraordinaire Russ on a day of coffee drinking, grocery shopping (for Russ’ restaurant Aunties & Uncles), cat watching and a little jamming to his new album for the first time.” In the video, Afie tells Russ, “I guess more than the last record, I just feel like it’s some fully realized version of me.” Watch the video via YouTube HERE.

This new release follows 2011’s Barchords, which The Guardian praised as containing “stripped-down harmony-brushed songs with gorgeous hooks and without a wasted note.” Jurvanen sought to create and produce a more developed arrangement of strings, brass, winds, orchestral percussion, and chamber choruses on Bahamas Is Afie. Prior to this record, Jurvanen’s releases have all been sparsely recorded records with this new album marking a transition to a more complex and fully arranged collection of music. Jurvanen’s debut album Pink Strat was released in 2009. The record was nominated for both a Juno Award and the Polaris Music Prize. Bahamas hit the road for two years after the release touring with artists such as Wilco and Robert Plant. In 2011 he released Barachords, which was nominated for two Juno Awards including Adult Alternative Album of the Year and Songwriter of The Year and was named Best Singer/Songwriter Album of 2012 by iTunes. Wall Street Journal praised the record as “bluesy and hypnotic,” and The Los Angeles Timescalled “A delightfully rare kind of record that commands an instant replay.”
