After "Lost Weight, Perfect Skin," the pummeling and almost tribal first single off Lower's debut record Seek Warmer Climes, was shared, it would have been easy for people to consider them a punk band (or post-punk, goth-punk, industrial, or any of a variety of diminutive labels), but they're so much more. A cursory listen to their new single, "Soft Option," shows a far greater depth of musicality than mere punk force. You can hear slivers of New Pop, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Scott Walker, and even artists like The Thompson Twins or The Church. It's a lush song, and shows the band's ear for unorthodox melody that simultaneously challenges and rewards the listener. Also, watch the subtle yet intense accompanying video, directed by the band's own Kristian Emdal.
The band plays its first of two shows in New York tonight, Wednesday, May 28th, at Home Sweet Home in Manhattan. They also play at Acheron on Friday, May 30th.
