Drug Cabin,
the sun warped new project ofNathan Thelen of Pretty Girls
Make Graves and Moonrats and Marcus Congleton of Ambulance
LTD, have premiered their psychedelic video for"Whatever
Never" on Noisey. The video was directed by Kevin
Willis, who helmedModest Mouse's "Satellite Skin" video
and has helped create six Tool videos as a producer, animator,
actor, stop motion animator and special effects artist, and was nominated for a
Grammy for Tool's "Stinkfist" video and
"Best Recording Package" for AEnima. The video for
"Whatever Never" is a mix of stop motion, clay animation, live acting
and is as trippy a video as you would expect from a band named Drug Cabin.
"I became distraught when I lost my cat of fifteen or so years,"
explains Willis about his inspiration for the video. "For weeks, my mind
went whirling into strange places knowing that he was never coming back. Then
one day he literally just fell back into my lap. So, I decided to document that
experience as best I could with this video."
"Whatever Never" hails from Drug Cabin's
self-titled debut EP, which was released onJune 19 on 401K
Music. The jaunty psych-pop song is available for free download atRCRDLBL where
it premiered: http://bit.ly/RMJKQK A second track, "Barracuda,"can
be downloaded for free at Filter who dubbed it "a
summer jam: http://bit.ly/TPhe1o
The album, called "a six-song collection of woozy,
beautifully melancholic songs" byPrefix, was recently
added into rotation at Starbucks.
Drug Cabin's first EP was created and recorded by Thelen at
friend Josh Klinghoffer's(Red Hot Chili Peppers) house before
Marcus Congleton joined the band. The EP was produced by Thelen's former Pretty
Girls Make Graves bandmate Nick DeWitt (Liars) and it
showcases both his ear for simple yet sublime arrangements and Thelen's
songwriting prowess and knack for melody. A mix of sun-dappled pop, woozy
psychedelia, and Laurel Canyon folk, the EP radiates a laid back Southern
California vibe.
Thelen and Congleton have been busy all summer writing their
debut LP, which will be released next year. The LA transplants, who have been
honing their sound over the last few months at shows around the city, have just
been added to Filter's Culture Collide Festival taking place in LA
on October 4-7. Tomorrow, September 14 they will open
up for Eternal Summers and DZ Deathrays at
LA's Bootleg Theatre.
