LITTLE HEATER OUT SEPTEMBER 18 ON THRILL JOCKEY
"'Save Our Ship,' from Irwin's upcoming release Little
Heater (Thrill Jockey), speaks to her gifts as a songwriter who's able to
create something that's warm and reverent, while putting her own twist on a
time-tested formula to keep you engaged . . . all the well-worn elements have a
familiar richness and depth to them, whether it's in Irwin's twangy accent or
her nostalgically tuneful acoustic guitars or the heart-tugging twinge of
melancholy fiddle." -- PopMatters
Catherine Irwin's singular writing skills and
performance style have always shone through, from her work as primary
songwriter in Freakwater to her debut solo album, the spare
and haunting Cut Yourself A Switch (2002). Throughout Little
Heater, her sophomore solo album and first in ten years, Catherine's
lyrics follow the themes of country music - loss, despair, self-destruction,
and delusion - but the references and turns of phrase are entirely modern as
she aims her laser wit into the dark corners of the human condition. The album
combines raw and unadorned vocals with lush countrypolitan-style
productions: gorgeous string sections, pedal steel guitar and dense layers of
vocal harmonies, all of which gently compliment Catherine's southern gothic
tales.
After sharing with you album track, "Mockingbird," featuring Bonnie
'Prince' Billy, Catherine now gives a further glimpse into Little
Heater with "Save Our Ship," premiered earlier today onPopMatters.
