Born in Brooklyn in 1996, Malik Hall better known as
Haleek Maul, left NYC to attend school in Barbados at a very young age. From
an early age he was experimenting with music, mostly rap and IDM, he
attributes his musical fever to the serene lifestyle Barbados offers,
choosing to shut himself off from normal adolescent activities and swapping
television for the sound of crashing waves. Having said that, the one thing
Haleek did rely on to aid his musical growth was the Internet, drawing
inspiration from artists such as Crystal Castles, Fever Ray and Tricky. Among
other things, a characteristic that separates Haleek from his contemporaries
is his open mind. There is no front, no alter ego, his music mirrors his
thoughts, he doesn't hide behind anything. When conversing with him, it's
clear that he questions everything, he philosophizes and challenges the
normal approach to living. Not believing in the idleness of adolescence,
Haleek promotes the notion of instilling productivity in people from a young
age.
"I don't really have anyone I look up to anymore,
most people prove to be disappointments, including myself," says Haleek.
It's this self awareness and brutal honesty that puts Haleek in a different
league than that of his peers.
Now, Haleek is ready to share his first release with the
world, the Oxyconteen EP, available now from Merok Records.
Based on the strength of the release, FACT recently named Haleek a New Talentwhen they posted the stream of the EP, which is
available on his Soundcloud. In addition to the stream, Merok is
currently hosting the entire release for free download for a limited time atmerokrecords.com
Oxyconteen marks the start of a very busy
summer for Haleek, who has a full collaborative mixtape with Chicago
production duo Supreme Cuts slated for release with Mishka later this summer,
as well as his live New York City debut at Glasslands on July 20th and a
handful of other surprises.
