When the New York Music Scene decided to get cool again in the early 2000’s, bands were popping out of the woodwork. Some of them were memorable (Have you heard of The Strokes?) and some of them not so much. Of the stellar bands to emerge from that wave, The Blam were at the crest right along with Interpol and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Headed by singer/guitarist Jerry Adler (now of Flugente and Wave Sleep Wave) along with Reuben Maher (guitar), Itamar Ziegler (bass/vocals) and Yuval Lion (drums), the band created a buzz in the rock revival era that had everyone excited. Breaking loudly into college radio and the CMJ charts, The Blam were on fire, literally, releasing two albums in the course of 11 months. Titled The Blam and Caveat Emptor, both have done well as they have made their mark on the indie music scene forever.
While all good things must eventually come to an end, The Blam’s abrupt disappearance was particularly curious. Having just gone into to the studio to record a new album, the band split in early 2005 without any warning. Since then, that album has been sitting in the vault begging to be heard.
Fans have often wondered what the next Blam record would have to offer and now they have the chance to find out, as the first of those sequestered albums, Blow Wind Blow, will finally see the light of day.
Blow Wind Blow offers a more Beatles-esque palette of songs with a production vibe reminiscent of Friends–era Beach Boys. It shows the evolution of a band growing on its own terms. As the next chapter of The Blam was seemingly just beginning, the grinding guitars and elevated tempos were yielding, at least temporarily, to a lovely and mature exploration of both another side of Adler’s writing persona and the creative range of the four musicians.
