LOS ANGELES, CA, December 16, 2013 - Combining reverb-drenched vocal harmonies, soaring underwater noise, floating melodies and meandering guitars with a pulsing groove, Athens, GA-based foursome New Madrid's sophomore LP, Sunswimmer, will be released February 25 on Normaltown Records. The album's lead track "Manners," a driving dose of buzzsaw guitars, hollowed vocals, and pummeling drums, is premiering atPitchfork who said they "draw from the same elemental sources as the Classic City legends, fashioning jangly, 80s indie with the rhythms of post-punk into something that was concisely called 'college rock' at one point."
The revered live band is currently on the road and just played a sold out show at theGramercy Theatre in NYC with Washed Out and J Roddy Walston & The Business for the 3rd Annual Ho Ho Ho Down. They will support Futurebirds in Atlanta on December 27 and will usher in the new year with a hometown performance alongside The Whigs for what's bound to be a rocking New Year's Eve. New Madrid will be touring extensively in 2014 and have already confirmed several shows including opening for Drive-By Truckersat the 40 Watt in Athens on February 13 and a record release show on February 25 at the High Watt in Nashville on release day.
New Madrid comprised of Phil McGill on vocals and guitar, Graham Powers on guitar/vocals, Ben Hackett on bass/vocals and Alex Woolley on drums, hail from the southern wilds of Athens, GA by way of Chattanooga and Nashville. The band's self-released debut full-length album, Yardboat, quickly set them apart in the ever-thriving music-mecca and along with a lauded and psychedelic live show, resulted in the honors of"Album Of The Year" and "Artist of the Year" at the 2013 Flagpole Music Awards. The LP displayed the band's inherent talents and introduced a distinctive sound budding with palpable sonic energy.
Written in the large red barn they all live together in and recorded solely on analog tape during a cool, wet July under producer and Director of the Music Business program at University of Georgia, Athens David Barbe (Deerhunter, Drive-By Truckers) at his Chase Park Transduction Studio in Athens, Sunswimmer telegraphs a newly confident self-knowledge, from the assertive opening riff of the churning "Manners" to the infectious driving beat behind "Forest Gum." The tracks here are more concentrated thanYardboat's offerings, but fans of New Madrid's expansive tendencies will be sated by the record's final 25 minutes, characterized by two linear compositions ("Homesick" and"And She Smiles") that end the album and make up side two of the vinyl. The album offers a unique listening experience as the sides weave two independent threads or one continuous enthralling experience.
Sunswimmer presents a New Madrid audibly settled into itself. Focused into a collection of collaborative songs, the band delves into a more experimental soundscape while never losing sight of their skillful pop songcraft.
