Bad, warbling sound. No ability to rewind. These are just a
few of benefits touted by Los Angeles-based, New Orleans-native musician Paul
Avion, who’s set to release a new project exclusively on used, 1975 8-track
cartridges this October 9th.
BENEFITS OF 8-TRACK CARTRIDGES
“Unlike the cassette, blocky 8-track cartridges (which look
more like Nintendo cartridges) can’t even rewind,” says Avion. “Listeners will
also appreciate how much better quality the 8-track is over the more modern
‘CD’.”
ABOUT PAUL AVION
Paul Avion’s R U With Me (which included
singles such as “Stand Up, Be a Man” and “Henry Sage & Mrs. Wolverton”)
debuted at #7 on CMJ’s “Most Added” chart in 2010.
WHY 8-TRACK?
“I was puzzled as to how to improve on today’s super hi-fi
recordings,” says Avion. “Then it hit me: Transfer the MP3s to 8-track tape,
for which I bought an AKAI CR-81D on eBay, which was top-of-the-line in 1975.”
WHY A “DOUBLE 1/2 EP?”
The new project, Summerland / Self-Destroyer will
be “a double 1/2 EP,” says Avion.
“My original intent was to create a ‘double EP’: i.e., two
EPs back to back, Summerland andSelf-Destroyer. But
then I decided to just record the first half of EP #1, and the second half of
EP #2, and thus create a ‘double 1/2 EP’.”
NO ITUNES?
“The project won’t be released on iTunes, or digitally at
all,” says Avion. “Instead, buyers will have the option of choosing a real old
vintage 8-track cartridge for the songs to be recorded onto. So your copy of
the album will be one-of-a-kind.”
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
Says Avion: “$19.99 will get you the ‘double-1/2 EP’
recorded onto a one-of-a-kind old 8-track tape of your choosing, which may
warble a lot and break at any moment. I can also include a certificate of
awesometicity, made out to you or your pet or loved one. I can include an MP3
disc, whatever that is, but you’ll have to let us know what happened to your
8-track player so I can post your excuse on paulavion.com.”
ARE THERE REFUNDS IF IT BREAKS?
“Yes!” says Avion. “But unfortunately a $29.99 restocking
fee applies, since it was tough to record it and everything.”
