Helen Marnie of UK electro-pop provocateurs Ladytron is
excited to announce that she is currently recording her debut solo album in
Reykjavik, Iceland. The as yet untitled LP will be released under the moniker Marnie and
is scheduled for 2013. "After five studio albums with Ladytron and some
time on my hands between work with them, I finally decided now was the time to
make an album I've always wanted to make. A solo album," Marnie says.
"I wanted to make a record that was more
delicate, majestic, perhaps more pop orientated, with pristine vocals, but most
of all, me," she says. "Lyrically, the album is expansive, but the
elements do play a part in much of the record, with the sea being particularly
dominant and reoccurring. The album is straight from the heart. I can't put it
any other way. It means a lot. It is everything around me, my loves, my life,
hopes and loss. Ultimately, the album is a battle. Battling myself. Dealing
with what life throws at you and trying to decipher it. Everyone can relate to
that."
Marnie has set up a Pledge Music campaign to help fund the recordings
and kickstart her solo career. "When it comes to support I have plenty
from people wishing me well, including my band members from Ladytron. They are
100% behind me," she says. "However, producers, mixing, mastering,
marketing are all very costly so I'm looking to Pledge Music to help make this
all possible. You can help make this happen and if you do decide to pledge I
really hope you will be happy with the results. I can't wait for you all to
hear."
Launched today, Marnie's Pledge Music campaign at http://pledgemusic.com/projects/marnie includes a
just under two minute video featuring a snippet of one of her songs in
progress. The beautiful, sweeping untitled track begins with an eerie piano
motif that is then joined by layers of synths that build on top of each other
to create a blissful swell; it perfectly complements the gorgeous imagery of
Iceland's green pastures, gray skies, expansive oceans and rushing waterfalls
depicted in the video.
As incentive to help fund the recording process, Marnie has
put together a variety of exclusives ranging from the ordinary to the
extraordinary. Fans can pre-order the album as a digital download, CD, gatefold
vinyl or can pick up a variety of items such as an 8 x 10 signed studio photo,
a disposable camera filled with random shots taken by Marnie, a tote bag, or a
limited edition screen printed poster in the lower tiers. The upper tiers is
where things get interesting: Marnie is offering the bikini that appears in the
promo photo (above), a pair of designer shoes and the designer dress worn by
her in Ladytron's "Tomorrow" video, a test pressing of the album and
her 1998 Rover Mini Cooper Sport, Beauty.
"The last year has been spent writing, and I've
actually surprised myself and grown in confidence with regards to
songwriting," she says. "I am scared, I'm nervous, but ultimately I
am excited and hope you will be able to help me fulfill this dream."
