Leftover Cuties' Debut LP, Places To Go, Out Now; "Game Called Life" Included on "The Big C" Soundtrack To Be Released June 7, Prior To Season Two Premiere June 27 "Everything I Got" Selected To Be KCRW's "Today's Top Tune" June 9
Leftover Cuties gave a sneak preview of their vintage noir-pop repertoire with their delightful five-song 2009 EP, Game Called Life, and now, their debut full-length, Places To Go, is available. Meanwhile, "Game Called Life," their acclaimed song from their EP, and title theme of Showtime's "The Big C," will be included on the series' soundtrack, to be released June 7 on Epic Records. Sony Music, Sony Pictures and Showtime will donate 100% of their net proceeds from the sales of "The Big C" soundtrack to Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), which is a nonprofit program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation. SU2C raises funds to accelerate groundbreaking, collaborative cancer research and utilizes the entertainment industry's resources to rally the public in support of the cause. Season two of "The Big C" will premiere on Showtime, Monday, June 27th at 10:30 PM.
The quintet will celebrate their LP release at the perfect speakeasy-like setting of Bardot in Los Angeles on June 2, and on June 9, KCRW has hand-picked "Everything I Got" as the "Today's Top Tune." The accordion-heavy ditty rides along the march of drums until McAllen's breathy vocals emerge to carry the song along a lazy melodic drift. Their album is currently streaming in its entirety on the group's site.
Centered around a ukulele, sultry vocals and jazzy, upbeat arrangements, Leftover Cuties have carved their own niche, paying homage to pop music of eras past and making it modern. To call Leftover Cuties retro or throwback would be too easy, and frankly dismissive. Sure, the music fits beside Billie Holiday, but it's also current in its sex appeal, its sophistication, its confidence. Comprised of Shirli McAllen (singer), Austin Nicholsen (ukulele), Stuart Johnson (drummer), Ryan Feves (bassist) and Mike Bolger (keys/trumpet/accordion), the Los Angeles-based outfit has been entertaining audiences locally, bringing their signature sound to life.
