"These fresh-faced Montrealers may look boyish, but
their post-punk sound is timeless and tough." - Montreal Mirror
The Blood on the Streets 7” is now
available for pre-order via the band’s bandcamp page.
Constantly walking the thin line between genius and
psychosis, Montreal’s YOUNG LUNGS are anything but juvenile. Hailing from
Montreal’s South Shore, close friends Guillaume Carrol (Bass), Justin Ross
(guitar) and Gervais Robinson (drums) yearned for something different than the
carbon copy acts that populated the clubs of their city. Too hardcore for the
indie crowd, too indie for the hardcore crowd, the boys had no choice but to
cut their own path. Their unique sound was forged in a suburban basement-
crystallized by countless hours of disciplined practice verging on the edge of
self-flagellation. This intense practice was not in vain -- Young Lungs’ hours
of rehearsal produced such a polished finish that they boast the ability to
play entire flawless sets while blindfolded. Until only recently, the stories
told through the melodies they fashioned were known to them alone, as Young
Lungs years of refining their sound came without a single public performance.
In the summer of 2011, Young Lungs decided to resurface from the depths of
their own self-imposed exile and are finally ready to share their music with
the world.
Consisting of only three members, Young Lungs’ sound can be
described as anything but thin. Drummer Gervais Robinson is his own worst
critic and lays claim to the fact that he will never use the same beat twice.
Robinson’s obsession pushes the boundaries of Young Lungs’ rhythm section as he
does the work of two percussionists. Guillaume Carroll and Justin Ross serve as
the band’s two main song-writers; drawing from influences ranging from surf
music to shoegaze, from the Pixies to Gang of Four, the two attempt to create
chaotic arrangements that evoke both a sense of familiarity and unease in their
audience, making the listener ask themselves “why can’t more songs be this
catchy and psychotic at the same time?” Young Lungs somehow manage to filter
no-wave guitar tones through power pop sensibilities, creating a sound that
Meet You At The Show called a “fast paced modern punk rock meets Wolf Parade
fusion.”
Their debut EP, Blood on the Streets, was
produced by Omar Hussain (of Montreal noise-rockers AIM Low) and mastered by
Jon Drew (Fucked Up/Tokyo Police Club/Arkells/Magneta Lane). Blood on
the Streets is slated for release on May 15.
