New York City’s funk-heavy psych-rockers Spirit Animal has released Big Black Delta's remix of their single, “Crocodile Skins,” which is available over at Spirit Animal’s soundcloud (along with the original version of the track). Big Black Delta is the solo project of Mellowdrone founder and one-time M83 guitarist, Jonathan Bates. His otherworldly, four-to-the-floor take on “Crocodile Skins” features a distorted, pulsating bass line, spaced-out vocals, and a mean, reinterpreted guitar riff.
Spirit Animal also has live dates coming up in NYC and Washington, DC (flyer below). Onstage, they are manic yet precise with a non-stop show full of big solos, tight grooves, and sweat-drenched sing-along moments. Be sure to check out the crazy, psychedelic music video for “Crocodile Skins” in case you missed it last month.
With mixing complete on their follow-up full length, Spiritia Animalia, Spirit Animal is poised to deliver the back-breaking rock and shit-kicking funk missing from the modern music landscape. The band, led by Steve Cooper, has already drawn comparisons to LCD Soundsystem, Animal Collective and Faith No More for their blend of irresistible hooks and riffs, complemented by the band's tight rhythm section. Add in a healthy dose of frontman-freakout, and you have Spirit Animal.
