Unplugged, yet intense…whiskey-drenched, ramshackle fury…

WNYC Soundcheck
The Devil Makes Three is a bluegrass trio. Sort of. Just don’t expect songs about catching rabbits or foggy mountains. Do expect songs about drug abuse, gunplay, advertising and other forms of bad behavior.

Nashville Scene
Their rootsy, Ozarkian vintage folk rock will speak to fans of bands like Old Crow Medicine Show—assuming they’ve listened to a Black Flag song or two.

Jambase
…troubadours to sing our survival tales.

SFist
a highly recommended gig for any fan of folk, bluegrass, or slow country …take in what could only be called “not your father’s” Americana.

Daytrotter
The Devil Makes Three take us into this place of the imperfect people - with their three-part harmonies and moonshine-y bluegrass - and make us feel that we could hang out in the devil's house, wear his clothes, sleep in his bed and drink his wine and brandy and it doesn't make us anything like a devil ourselves, it just makes us empathize a bit with the poor devil. It might get us a bit tipsy and it makes us believe in the goodness of the devil and his music.

  Under the Radar
...like the best bourbon, goes down smooth, and then help to steer the rest of your day

  Eastern Surf Mag
Punk-tinged, whiskey-fueled, old-timey/bluegrass/ragtime blend...Charmingly ragged vocal harmonies and a legendary live show only add to the band’s allure.

Flavorwire

The Devil Makes Three play a tongue-in-cheek form of American roots music, bucking genre conventions with lyrics that trend toward atypical subjects like crack abuse and getting your picture taken with the Four Horsemen.

  Hear Ya
The "gypsy-punk-hillbilly-bluegrass-blues gospel" description is a mouthful, but DM3 is far from ordinary. Their sound is driven by rhythm and three-part harmonies that beg you to boogie down, even if you aren’t the boogie down type.

More on The Devil Makes Three
Over the past 7 years, The Devil Makes Three have garnered fans the old school way - playing a city, making friends, conquering fans and moving on. When they hit the next town, venues are packed with folks that heard from a friend in a city that the band had played before.  Because of this, The Devil Makes Three have established thousands of die-hard and devout fans.  The Devil Makes Three are songwriter, guitar and vocalist Pete Bernhard, banjo player Cooper McBean and stand-up bassist Lucia Turino. All three members migrated to Santa Cruz via New England. Fellow Vermonters, Bernhard and McBean played in punk influenced bands back home but found a common ground in acoustic, country and bluegrass inspired music. When they met New Hampshire native Turino out west, she taught herself the stand-up bass an d a band was born.
