"Deadpan brilliance." - The New Yorker
It's been one year since CAKE released
their #1 album, Showroom of Compassion, yet
the success continues for the band with the debut of a new music video for
"Mustache Man (Wasted)," the group's third hit single, which
is currently Top 20 and rising at Alternative Radio. The album's first single,
"Sick of You," remained a Top 5 hit at Alternative and Triple A radio
for over 3 months, and second single "Long Time" saw similar success,
making this a trifecta rarely seen in today's music climate.
Debuting at #1 on Billboard's Top
200 upon its release, Showroom of Compassion has seen
enduring success, with praise from the likes of TIME, Rolling
Stone, NPR, Associated Press, and more. On February
16, the band will return to Conan, marking their second
appearance on this album cycle. Their late-night-TV resume is rounded out with
multiple appearances onJimmy Kimmel Live! and The Tonight
Show with Jay Leno, along with The Late Show with David Letterman, Late
Night with Jimmy Fallon, Lopez Tonight, and The Late Late Show with
Craig Ferguson. Described by CAKE frontman John McCrea as
"both creepy and life-affirming," the video premieres today on MTV.
Filmed in Portland, OR, and helmed by noted Portland director/photographer Alicia
J. Rose, the clip is classic CAKE. "When John told me that he wanted
the video to be 'cathartic for a generation,' I was sent down a rabbit hole
that brought me to the idea of "Repo Man meets Saturday Night Fever"
with a bit of Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Desperate
Livingthrown in," explains Rose. "The 'Mustache Man' became a man
from mars who stops by Earth to refuel on Girl Power, but gets caught in the
act. The cast is filled with many of my favorite Portland actors and people,
including the ingenious Michael Fetters as the Mustache Man himself. It
also didn't hurt to have more than a few of our stellar crew fresh off
production of the hit television show Portlandia. Working with all
the members of CAKE on the Mustache Man video was a total blast."
CAKE guitarist Xan McCurdy adds, "We knew from the outset that we wanted a video that was exciting, funny but also a bit unnerving, and Alicia delivered that - and more."
CAKE is John McCrea, Vincent DiFiore, Xan McCurdy, Gabriel Nelson and Paulo Baldi.
