This Ain't No "Gay Bar Part Two"
(Although That's the Title of the Opening Track)
Announcing Handful of Summer Dates & Extensive Nat'l Fall Tour
Remote controlling you to love ELECTRIC SIXDETROIT, MI - Known for their hilariously subversive and over-the-top singles and videos such as "Danger (High Voltage)" and "Gay Bar", Metropolis recording artists ELECTRIC SIX are gearing up for the release of their fifth album FLASHY on October 21, 2008. Produced by guitarist Zach Shipps and recorded at Hamtramck Sound Machine in Michigan, Flashy is a diverse journey in their absurdist, surrealist, and oftimes double entendre-driven minds. "Our modus operandi for this record was to use more horns," vocalist Dick Valentine says with a sideways glance, "And also to write songs on synthesizers and then turn them into guitar-based songs. But the main thing was to get all these songs out of our heads and onto paper. They were in our heads. Now they are on paper."
The Spaghetti-Western-tinged and horn-heavy opening track "Gay Bar Pt. 2" (which actually isn't an extension of one of their profile-cementing singles) is a band in-joke, with a side reference to the public need for sequels. "We have been talking for years about our next single being called 'Gay Bar Part 2' or naming our next album Gay Bar Pt. 2," he snickers. "We started by floating it out in interviews for a laugh. The interviewers always ended up believing us and getting really excited about the prospect of a 'Gay Bar Pt. 2'. At first, we felt sorry for them. Later, we felt sorry for us because we began to see that we had less money. Now we want more money. This is the only way."
Flashy cover, innit? From the swirling guitars of "We Were Witchy Witchy White Women" to the piano-driven funk of "Flashy Man" to the anthemic "Your Heat Is Rising", Flashy is a hook-driven journey through the highly creative and musically-gifted, yet infinitely and maturely puerile minds of Electric Six. The first single "Formula 409" is as much a paean to the household cleaner as it is a hormonally flirtatious come-on, complete with heavy, searing guitars and a beat-rich rhythm section. The accompanying video made a not-so-subtle splash on YouTube, prompting tastemaker sites into salivating intrigue by the bucketload. Idolator admires its low-budget camp and praises, ".. this is the cheap, strong stuff." Stereogum relishes Dick's goofiness, " irony-clad vocalist Dick Valentine's still into his flashing codpiece [from the 'Danger (High Voltage)" video]." Prefix Magazine sums it all up with their acclaim: "This video is like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest for the ironic generation, except with more violence. In short, 'Formula 409' makes us more excited for an Electric Six album than we've been in a long time."
In advance of the album's release, Electric Six will also be playing a handful of shows this week, supported by New York-based Tragedy, a heavy metal tribute to The Bee Gees, including boat cruises in New York City and Boston. In the Fall to kick off album's release, the band will also embark on an extensive national tour with Local H, kicking off in their homestate of Michigan.
