"T.H. White's More Than Before, was one of '04's nicer surprises, an album brimming with slinky rhythms, low-end rumbles and shimmering sheen." - TimeOut New York
"With sounds ranging from sprawling, crawling beats to lava-lamp like flow of stoner-rock indulgence...White has streamlined his jam-band sensibility, creating that chill Massive Attack or Zero 7-style sound with live instruments that he played in actual studios." - PAPER Magazine
From the moment he heard acts like Led Zeppelin, Blondie and Grandmaster Flash, when he was 8 years old, T. H. White’s entire focus has been on being the musician and the producer. By the age of 11, White was taking formal guitar and drum lessons. Growing up in New York City afforded him the opportunity to attend music programs filled with professional musicians who would teach in the afternoon before their evening gigs. White studied percussion with the legendary Eddie Locke, who played with Coleman Hawkins and Kenny Burrell among others. By 16, he was already a veteran of several NYC bands and been on stage at many historical venues like CBGB’s, Tramps and Wetlands.
On his new album, Company Book, White continues to accomplish what a very select few are able to – record as a musician, producer, songwriter, arranger, guitarist, bassist and programmer – the New York City native does it all. His abundant versatility is in full flight, taking the listener into an ethereal world of groove, mood and song craft that nicely reflects the skills of its creator.
Immediately upon listening one can tell that in addition to his multiple talents there is also a wide array of influences present, from productions in the style of a DJ/Producer such as Thievery Corporation, LCD Soundsystem or Moby, to playing live instruments in the complex vein of prog- rock and jazz. A sound that saw tracks from his first two releases featured in the now legendary HBO series “The Sopranos” and Fox TV’s (X-Files spin-off) “The Inside.” From the finger picked and crystallized guitar paired with beat driven female vocals on ‘The Darkest Horse’ to the live funky bass lines encompassed by futuristic soaring synths on ‘Five Hands On’, constant new ground is touched.
THW’s third LP delivers a resonant sounding album, eclectic in scope and feel. But as White says, it’s designed to also sound good, not just eccentric: “On this album, I’m fusing a lot of different things ultimately in a way that can appeal to anyone. I work very hard on making the music sound as slick as possible – polish is a weapon that I use to seduce my listener.” To that end, White once again worked with mixer Ron Shaffer, a veteran who’s worked with artists such as Tricky, Levert, Sean Lennon and Gomez. He also joined up again with singer (and actress from Law & Order and Guiding Light) Meghan Wolf, who sings on “The Darkest Horse."
White is excited about ushering Company Book (a title that reflects the dichotomy of the corporate atmosphere surrounding his Manhattan studio location) out into the world. But, don’t expect any breaks in the flow of music emanating from the supremely versatile music man. He concludes, “I want to do it all. I want to write and produce for other artists, score films, mix lifestyle compilations, and continually move my career behind the scenes. I prefer the studio/office way more than a stage or photo shoot.” All of the above is just a testament to the happiness of a musician creating, doing what he wants to do exactly how he wants to do it and using a diversity of skills to do it all well.
