Zorch multi-instrumentalist Shmu shares first track from new EP & U.S. tour dates

Shmu - paint

Zorch multi-instrumentalist Shmu announces new EP and tour dates

Listen to "She's Leaving" HERE

"Compared to the manic sensibilities of Zorch, Shmu brings a more chilled-out vibe with elements of pop and shoegaze, opting for some serious grooves rather than spacey synths." -- ALARM Press

Sam Chown, drummer/singer/multi-instrumentalist in Austin's hyper-kinetic duo Zorch, A.K.A.
Shmu shares the first track from the forthcoming Chroma Key EP today. The song, "She's Leaving" showcases the band's glitchy dream pop/shoegaze meets blue-eyed soul sound, listen/share HERE.

Shmu -- a solo recording endeavor expanded to a three piece band in a live setting -- takes to the road throughout the Southwestern U.S. next month. Please see dates below. Watch the band in action performing "I've Got Nothing To Show" VIDEO HERE.
The 5-song Chroma Key EP is the followup to Shmu's full length debut
Discipline/Communication released in 2012. Like that album's melodic exploration into dream pop, shoegaze, glitch, psych and experimental rock, Chroma Key further expands the pop hooks with hazy layers of guitar and soulful vocals. Chown wrote, performed, arranged and produced all of the tracks which will be released January 14th as a download-only, the first in a series of EPs leading up to a double LP release in late 2014. It will also be available locally for Austin Free Week on download cards, beginning January 1st.

EL DRUGSTORE: Debut Album Streaming At American Aftermath; Plague Ship Sails On New Year's Eve

As EL DRUGSTORE prepares for the release their debut full-length, Plague Ship, on New Year's Eve, the whole album from the Jersey-based prog pirates is now playing.

The album stream is hosted by American Aftermath, who, in an early 9/10 review of the album, referred to the forty-five minute excursion as "hyperactive, disjunctive and jarring," stating, "It will enthrall you as well as pummel you with its tornadoes of complex riffing and eccentricities. Instrumental technical metal has been done before but EL DRUGSTORE have a style all their own and Plague Ship can attest to that." A manifesto documenting the album's instrumental madness track-by-track has been released alongside the album stream as well, providing a curious view into these lyric-free, anticapella dirges.

Board the Plague Ship RIGHT HERE.

Comprised of guitarist Kevin Conway (ex-East of the Wall), drummer Seth Rheam (East of the Wall) and bassist Rolando Alvarado, EL DRUGSTORE's jacked-up delivery is at full-mast on Plague Ship, the record bearing over forty-five minutes of their belligerent, instrumental bombast. On the dizzying array of head-scratching jam-outs, amplification runs rampant, propelling the massive array of effect/pedal-laden spazz-riffery through the pummeling percussive whiplash without a whiff of spitty breath to be found. Plague Ship was tracked at parts unknown by the band and their cohort Chris Alfano (East of the Wall, Argonauts), and mixed and mastered by Kevin Antreassian at Backroom Studios.

EL DRUGSTORE Live:
2/01/2014 Paradise Lost - New Brunswick, NJ w/ Zevious, Fond Han, Mothguts

"The Jersey instrumental trio makes a fuckload of noise... 45 minutes of brain-busting, off-timed scatterrock." - Noisey/Vice

"If masturbating to Mahavishnu Orchestra in a Primus shirt while the jiggling lady explains string theory over a Mastodon soundtrack is your thing pick it up. It's hectic, it's heavy, it's technical." - New Noise Magazine

"...a winding and twisting instrumental act with a capital 'mental'... Delightfully non-linear..." - Heavy Blog Is Heavy

"In places Plague Ship soundtracks a cyclone carnival ride, all dizzying tempos and blurring sights, and follows riders as they disembark to stagger down the midway, dodge fest-goers and barfpiles, then come to a stop facedown behind the toilets. It's wild!" - MetalSucks

Diffuser Interviewed Potpourri of Pearls About Beyonce, John Waters, and Cults.

Diffuser Interviewed Potpourri of Pearls Resulting in a Thing on the Internet That is Actually Fun to Read.

"If Potpourri of Pearls get to be as big as Erasure or the Pet Shop Boys or one of the ’90s crossover dance acts they reference with their glowing ’80s-style synth-pop, they’ll do so on their own terms. In one press release, the Philadelphia trio refers to itself as a “highly educated band of gay homosexuals who were born on the Internet,” and in another, it cops to taking its name from a slang term for male seminal fluid. These are people that live outside of what you might call polite society, but they write songs catchy and heartfelt enough to appeal to tween girls, housewives, indie rock dudes and just about anyone else lucky enough to hear the stuff." - Kenneth Partridge/Diffuser

Potpourri of Pearls have a new album coming out on February 11th. The album is called We Went to Heaven and downloads are available for review upon request.

Ane Bune and Linnea Olsson's "Halo" live video

ROLLING STONE PREMIERES
ANE BRUN AND LINNEA OLSSON’S
“HALO” LIVE VIDEO
DUO WILL EMBARK ON NORTH AMERICAN TOUR IN FEBRUARY
RARITIES OUT NOW ON BALLOON RANGER RECORDS
“Norwegian-born pop singer-songwriter Ane Brun makes music that fits well into the cinematic world. Her songs are brimming with life and energy while still touching on feelings of loss and self-doubt.”—NPR
“Norwegian-born pop songstress Ane Brun has been known
for her ability to rework other people’s songs”—Paste
Ane Brun and Linnea Olsson’s live performance of Beyoncé’s “Halo” recently premiered on Rolling Stone’s website athttp://rol.st/JaRM46 and can be streamed and shared on YouTube at http://youtu.be/6FWG4hIzQTo. A studio version of the cover also appears on Ane Brun’s new collection Rareties, out now on her own Balloon Ranger label. The singer is set to embark on a North American tour with Olsson, a cellist and singer who will support Brun as a featured musician. “I am very excited to perform my music in America,” says Olsson. “I love touring in the states and I am curious about how the audience will receive my songs. I can’t wait to get there.” The tour includes stops in Los Angeles and New York; please see below for complete tour dates.
Brun’s second collection of the year Rareties follows the release of Songs 2003-2013 in May and is being praised by Stereo Subversion as “the proper monument for an artist intent on documenting an achievement” and by Ear Buddy as a “must listen.” Both collections are celebrations of Brun’s critically acclaimed and highly successful ten-year music career, and Rarities features lesser-known works spanning her time as a recording artist.
According to Brun, “Rarities is a compilation of songs and recordings that have either not been released, or have been released on other compilations or as singles. This is a way to empty our  cupboards of recordings that have been lying around, and another way to mark my ten year anniversary as an artist.” The collection includes covers of Björk and The Beatles, among others, as well as new versions of fan favorites and previously unreleased songs. See below for full track listing.
Rarities collects some of the more private moments from Brun’s career. Her cover of “Halo” derives from a tradition of singing the song backstage to warm up on her 2009 tour with The Diamonds. The Beatles’ “From Me To You” and Amerie’s “1 Thing” were recorded alone in Brun’s Stockholm studio. The piano version of “Oh Love,” is a recording of a performance of the song for a small group of friends.
On the other hand, Rarities also includes some very public moments released for the first time. Brun’s rendition of Björk’s “Joga” was recorded at the 2012 Polar Prize Award Ceremony in front of Björk herself and a TV audience of millions. Brun remembers being “as nervous as I’ve ever been, both before and after.” Fans may recognize the new version of “Humming One of Your Songs,” the first track from Brun’s very first album, from renditions at live shows the past few years.
Brun was born in Norway and lives in Stockholm. She has recorded eight albums over the last ten years. In 2005, her second album A Temporary Dive earned her critical acclaim at home and abroad and the Norwegian Grammy for Best Female Artist. Her third album The Changing Of The Seasons was recorded in Iceland by Valgier Sigursson, of which the New York Times said, “Changing of the Seasonsoffers the kind of comfort that only well-versed singer-songwriters can give. An album full of sad songs to revel in as the days grow shorter and colder, Seasons is Brun’s strongest work yet.” Songs 2003-2013 was a confirmation of Brun’s achievements as a songwriter, and Rarities furthers that proclamation, celebrating the less-known corners of Brun’s catalog.

Exmag Featuring Gramatik
Drops Full-Length Debut LP Titled 'Proportions'
+ Plays 2-Night NYE Run In Chicago

Stream "Proportions" by Exmag - HERE

"Weighing in at a hefty 18 tracks, Proportions collection of tunes features an array of psychedelic synths, crunchy bass breakdowns and impactful lyrics from the likes of Gibbz, Jason Huber of Cherub, and friends."  - This Song Is Sick

"Their impeccable guitar licks accompanied by funky fresh basslines, crooning vocals, and synthesizers will take listeners on a journey through space and time as their futuristic funk sound is unparalleled today in music."  - The Dankles

"Bluesy-soulful jazz rhythms, funky high-frequency synths over low bass, entangled with insanely eloquent guitar riffs, bounded by an elegant hip-hop feel make “Extraordinary Magnitude” aka Exmag."  - Electric
Sloth

Five Brooklyn-based producers, Eric Mendelson, Tyler Dondero, Mike Iannatto, Illumntr, and the always groovadelic Gramatik, have joined forces to drop their first album on Gramatik's Lowtemp label. "Proportions" contains all the right elements of funk, soul, blues, R&B, and electronica to display a post neo-soul type of vibe, which was inspired by artists such as Erykah Badu, DeAngelo, and Robert Glasper. This evergrowing contingent of artists is not just another "EDM" group, but a production collective who explore new means of pushing the limits by combining live instruments and vocalists with their very own synthesized beats. Stream the entire Exmag album and check out the track list HERE - a free download will be available very soon.

Fans looking to experience something new and fresh to ring in the New Year can catch a glimpse of Exmag's livetronica performance, as the band celebrates their album release by joining Gramatik's two-night New Year's Eve run in the jewel of the Midwest. In addition to the Exmag crew, Gramatik will also bring out an exciting set of supporting acts for each night in Chicago.

Monday December 30th is Lowtemp's first official showcase, and rest assured this night will be one for the record books. The Concord Music Hall will also feature label newcomer BRANX, live vocals by Gibbz and Exmag's Illumntr along with Russ Liquid, while night two will see trap/electro producer HeRobust and Chicago's own Manic Focus at the Auditorium Theatre.

As we anxiously await for Gramatik's highly anticipated Age Of Reason album to drop, he will embark on yet another journey in the New Year, this time through Canada and the Northeast, culminating with two shows in New York at Output on January 21st and the Best Buy Theater on January 25th. See all of his upcoming tour dates HERE.

LOUDER THAN HELL - THE DEFINITIVE ORAL HISTORY OF METAL - RANKS HIGHEST THIS YEAR!!!

Rolling Stone magazine picks LOUDER THAN HELL: THE DEFINITIVE ORAL HISTORY OF METAL as one of 2013's Best Music Books!

Kirkus Reviews, About.com, and UK pub The Independent
also cite acclaimed tome as one of the “year’s best.”

NEW YORK – Rolling Stone has selected LOUDER THAN HELL: The Definitive Oral History of Metal as one of its “20 Best Music Books of 2013.” The magazine referred to the book, which was compiled from over 400 interviews conducted by respected music journalists Jon Wiederhorn and Katherine Turman, as a “terrific heavy metal history… a classic tale of sex, drugs and Satan that'll thrill even non-headbangers.”

LOUDER THAN HELL (It Books/HarperCollins) was also cited by UK outlet The Independent as a ”book of the year,” “….useful in illuminating the how and the why of events, and frank in confronting heavy-metal controversies.” Meanwhile, the prestigious magazine Kirkus Reviews named LTH one of the “Best Books of 2013 on Sports and Entertainment,” calling it “an indispensable oral history of an often misunderstood musical genre. The most important lesson this mammoth tome teaches us is that metal means far more than one might believe.”

The chronological history of heavy metal, told through the words of the men and women who created it, played it, re-invented it, and continue to rock it, features an introduction by Scott Ian of Anthrax an afterword by Rob Halford of Judas Priest, and three 16-page photo inserts, with some never-before seen candid shots by celebrated rock photographers Stephanie Cabral, Robert Matheu and others.

An updated paperback version of LOUDER THAN HELL will be released in April 2014.

LOUDER THAN HELL received numerous kudos following its May 2013 release, including:
Time Magazine: “…it is totally unnecessary to be a metalhead to enjoy this book.” A thrilling read for all!”
The Washington Post: "Wiederhorn and Turman turn in a compelling, first-person account of a seemingly unstoppable force... the book reads like an extended, uncensored, shockingly satisfying episode of VH1’s ‘Behind the Music.’ Even when a more sensitive reader might want to look away, the unfettered lifestyle, the continually one-upped definition of extreme, and all the merciless consequences are too fascinating to ignore."
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY (A- review): “…as indispensable as a skull-adorned leather jacket.”
ROLLING STONE (4 star review!): “…no one’s gone quite as deep into the genre’s recesses as this 736-page oral history…”
LA WEEKLY:  “…an amazing account of the four-decades-old genre…”
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY : “…the authors’ inclusiveness give this examination a weight that is just as heavy as the music.”

THE ADVERSARY's Cover of Flaming Lips "Yoshimi" Premieres on VEVO, MAGNETIC and COVER ME SONGS!

After a breakthrough year with media support from Huffington Post, Alternative Press, ReGen Magazine, FourCulture, among others, NYC-based organic electro band THE ADVERSARYare gearing up for another exciting year with the release of their new single “YOSHIMI”, a cover of the Flaming Lips classic.  The song premiered on popular music site, Cover Me Songs earlier this month which can be found here, and the accompanying video first premiered on Magnetic Magazine soon after here.  Today makes its widespread premiere on VEVO and can be seen here: http://vevo.ly/xDyvex

Slated to appear on the second chapter of his ongoing music saga that began with CHAPTER ONE: THE RUINS (Uncanny Valley Records) which was released earlier in 2013, “Yoshimi” is, asCover Me Songs describes, an “electronic lullaby” featuring guest vocals from Jenny Electrik of Dynasty Electric. CHAPTER TWO was produced by seminal producer Bill Laswell (Blur, Mick Jagger, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Yoko Ono) and mixed by Q (Swedish House Mafia, Tommy Trash, Steve Angello) and will feature the further adventures of a couple in love trying to survive and find their salvation in a post-apocalyptic world of ruins. Chapter One: The Ruins was voted "EP of the Week" by influential NYC dance blog Terry Gotham here.

Frontman of The Adversary Andre Mistier’s journey through music has been an unconventional one. The New York-based musician, who has a foundation in theater, has explored the connection between electronic sounds and instrument-based rock since the inception of his first band [ism] in 2004. In 2008, as his tenure with [ism] was drawing to a close, Mistier began working on film soundtracks and theater scores, his first musical efforts done solo. The work was deeply compelling to the artist and he found himself moving into the sonic territory that became his new project, The Adversary.

With 2013 drawing to a close and his momentum growing exponentially, The Adversary is poised for a promising 2014.  With the attention already building on “Yoshimi”, not only does it seem promising but swift as well.
