WINTERUS ANNOUNCES NEW LINEUP - ‘In Carbon Mysticism’ out now on Lifeforce Records

Michigan black metal act Winterus has announced its permanent updated lineup, which will embark on a headlining tour, the “Lone Wolves Tour”, in June. After the recent departure of guitarist Nathan Barnes (guitar) and Cody McCoy (drums), guitarist Les Paul and drummer Kollin Perpignani have been added to the mix, along with bassist Donovan Bates, to round out the strongest Winterus lineup yet.



“As bands grow, you find people that really get what you are trying to do,” said vocalist Christopher Erich Neu. “Things are only getting tighter.”

Winterus will hit the road on the “Lone Wolves Tour” in support of its Lifeforce Records debut In Carbon Mysticism, which released on April 26th.
Ohio heavy metal outfit The Convalescence will accompany Winterus on the trek around the US.

The self-produced and engineered album was recorded last winter in Battle Creek, MI, and mastered in Los Angeles by Maor Appelbaum (Cynic, Therion, and Rob Halford). It consists of six studio tracks and three live recordings.

Juliana Hatfield, intrepid indie pop/rock veteran, inimitable guitar goddess, singer, songwriter, and author, is set to release Speeches Delivered To Animals and Plants on August 30th on her own Ye Olde Records, which is distributed by Junketboy. Speeches... is a successfully-conceived album based loosely on the concept of failure. It was entirely fan-funded via www.pledgemusic.com, wherein individuals pledged varying amounts in advance of the album's completion for different returns including Hatfield memorabilia, a guitar used on the recording of the new album, original Hatfield artwork, song workbooks, demos, and more. PledgeMusic gives artists the option to build a charitable donation into their campaigns; Juliana will be donating a percentage of the funds raised to two of her favorite charities, the Save a Sato animal shelter in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, Massachusetts.

Speeches... is the follow up to last year's Peace and Love, which Paste Magazine hailed for its "fearless honesty" while SPIN extolled its "affirmations turned narratives that are sharpened rather than softened by their harmonies." Working at Q Division Studios in Somerville, Massachusetts, Hatfield produced and played all the six-string guitars and keyboards on the new album. Ed Valuaskas played bass and Pete Caldes played drums. (See below for track listing.) The 13 songs feature Hatfield's distinctive but typically underrated guitar stylings-highly emotive but not overly slick, and resonating with a range of human emotions from joy to despondence to goofiness to resignation.

What's with the title? "I think that when people get to the presumed halfway point in their lives, they inevitably look back and assess what they have or have not accomplished. There is an acceptance of one's limitations, a scaling back of goals, a settling into the way things are," observes Hatfield. "I think I have always had a pretty measured perspective-I am always grateful for all the good opportunities I've had but at the same time I'm never really content. I always want to do more, to be better-a better singer, performer, writer, person, friend, sister, daughter, etc. I don't shy away from the dark stuff -without the darkness there would be no light."

Hatfield first came to prominence in her teens as a founding member of the Blake Babies. After four independent albums with the group, she signed to Atlantic as a solo artist and had a string of modern-rock hits (including "My Sister," "Spin The Bottle" and "Universal Heartbeat"). She left the label in 1998, signing to Zoe Records (a Rounder Records imprint) and releasing four well-regarded albums, including 2004's In Exile Deo, named as one of that year's 10 best albums by The New York Times' Jon Pareles. In 2005, Hatfield came full circle, returning to her independent roots and founding Ye Olde Records. Her autobiography, When I Grow Up, was published by Wiley & Sons in 2008.

"I've gotten to a place where I am really proud of the large body of work that I have produced, regardless of how my work is or is not received, or how many records I've sold," she reflects. "I know my weaknesses but I also know that I have gifts and I've made the most of them with this new album."

The band plans on releasing new information about the concept of the EP with the release of the new single. Passion Of The Heist includes guest appearances, including an appearance by ATTACK ATTACK’s Caleb Shomo on the track ‘Ascension’.

“We've had such an amazing time putting hard work into this album, and we can't wait for people to hear it,” states vocalist Phil Druyor. Guitarist Nick Sampson adds, “This is the first time we've ever sat down to write an album with no outside opinion, and it turned out awesome.”

The Devil Whale Drop Full Length Teeth Today!

Upon the first listen, it's clear that Salt Lake City's The Devil Whale possess a genuine small-town aesthetic that most indie-folk bands only strive to capture. Anyone who has heard the music of Brinton Jones will agree that his songs are literature of the heart. Like a book bound by melody, harmony, and honesty, they unfold before you. Paragraphs become verses and chapters become choruses, leaving room for interpretation and relation. Brinton is as much an author as he is a songwriter.

With Jones at the helm as the primary songwriter on vocals and guitar, The Devil Whale is the product of a collaboration between Brinton and long-time friends Jake Fish (on bass) and Cameron Runyan (on drums). In more recent years, that collaboration has been rounded out with the addition of Jamie Timm on lead guitar and Wren Kennedy on keyboards.

Their second full-length, Teeth, out now, draws from the band’s 60’s and 70’s garage and pop influences such as The Animals, The Kinks, and Harry Nilsson. With the help of an EP (Young Wives, 2010) between their first full-length and this release, Teeth has evolved to have a little more “bite” than their debut full-length, Like Paraders (2008). The album plays host to a plethora of talented players, including friends from Seattle’s The Head And The Heart singing on the track "Magic Numbers."

In support of the release, The Devil Whale can be caught live from coast-to-coast (and back again) throughout 2011.

Hailing from Toronto, but sounding more akin to the hybrid electro-noir sounds coming out of Berlin and London, THE FUTURELESS return with Futura2, the second EP installment in the FUTURA triptych release series, out this June the 13th.

A brief history on the band takes us back to 2009 when The Futureless met prolific indie producer Shawn Lefebvre (Dragonette, Muse, LA Guns, Cancer Bats) and began recording what would become the Futura Triptych: 3 separate EPs with a seamless, cognitive thread. Sean-Patrick, one-third of the trio (all incidentally named Sean/Shawn/Shaun) elaborated on the concept - “Each part of the triptych is a microcosm of the whole with peaks and valleys; ebbs and flows both singularly and totally. Futura2 is the middle of the triptych so it has some added weight to it. Futura2 takes you from the more pop-oriented "Future Perfect" and "Break Blow Burn" but quickly dissolves into the dark, trip-hop influenced "Waiting For Rain" and the melancholic "Modular Hope".

In 2010, the band released Futura as a way to test their sound with audiences and critics. With very little hype, Futura garnered international praise, college radio air-play (peaking at #25 on Earshot!) and was lauded by the online blog community in Canada, US, UK, Netherlands and New Zealand. Based on the success of the soft and scant release of Futura, the band recently re-released Futura, but this time with the added bonus of having made the EP available for purchase via a digital distribution deal with Island Records.

The Futureless will release Futura2 on June 13 2011. Their moody pop sound echoes the 80's but shows a definitive movement towards a new, modern style some have called "post-dance". The Futureless' rigorous touring plans include cities across North America and Canada throughout the remainder of the year, with a full tour schedule out shortly. To keep our appetites whet in the meantime, the guys have just finished working with Swedish electronic musician/producer Anders Ilar on remixes and several original songs to be released both here and overseas.

Sarabeth Tucek is set to release her sophomore LP, Get Well Soon, on May 24th on Ungawa Records. It’s a stunning record that, although not a concept album as such, forms a narrative based around the death of Sarabeth’s father, or as she beautifully describes it “an impressionistic rendering of a time ruled by grief”. The 12 tracks were “sequenced and resequenced for weeks” in order for the story to emerge and the end result sees not one wasted word or unnecessary note; all we’re left with is “just pure feeling”.

Sarabeth was born to a psychiatrist and a psychologist in Miami, but grew up in New York. She was a latecomer to music, her first calling being acting. However, after a few years in Hollywood, her singing and songwriting was encouraged by people on the music scene she fell in with. She first made an impression singing backing vocals on Smog’s 2003 album Supper and then in the film ‘Dig!’, where she sings a song she had just written called "Something For You". The Brian Jonestown Massacre went on to cover the song (retitled "Seer"), but Sarabeth’s own version became her debut single, on Sonic Cathedral, back in February 2007.

This stark and simple song won her legions of fans and her self-titled debut album followed a few months later (on the Echo label) to rapturous reviews. Produced by Ethan Johns and Luther Russell, its understated style was an inspiration to a number of singer-songwriters who followed in Sarabeth’s wake, including Laura Marling, who approached Johns to produce I Speak Because I Can after hearing it.

However, despite everything seemingly going so right, at home everything was going wrong. “Some very bad things happened during the first record and after,” recalls Sarabeth. “It was as if all that had ever troubled me, hurt me, came back just as I was embarking on what should’ve been the happiest time of my life. It all came back and said, ‘Not so fast...’

“I don’t think my mind could handle all the good coming its way. It was unfamiliar terrain and I didn’t know how to traverse It. Predictably, my drinking got out of control and that led to a couple car accidents, jail and legal troubles.I wanted to leave LA anyway, but now I felt I sort of had to. I hoped that by coming back home to New York I would be able to forge some kind of redemptive break from the past. To forgive myself.”

The move has informed much of the music on Get Well Soon. The warmth of the West Coast has gone, replaced by a much rawer sound, all recorded over an intensive 15-day period in a basement in Southampton, Pennsylvania. “We recorded this record in a house where we also lived,” Sarabeth explains. “My friends Robert and Peter from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club recorded ‘Howl’ there. It’s owned by the Nicgorski family who are all very musical: Billy, who offered me the basement, and his brother have played in lots of bands, their sister Maria sings on ‘State I Am In’ and their father Wally spent his mornings on the front porch singing in his rocking chair. Making a record where I am singing to and about my father and seeing and hearing their dad out there every morning served up a pretty strong and bittersweet feeling for me.”

“I think we managed to capture a unique mood down in that basement,” adds producer Luther Russell. “As guests in someone’s home we got a feeling that might not have happened in a regular studio. Sarabeth wanted to be somewhere totally unfamiliar; the material was incredibly personal to her, so she had to feel right about where she did it. My job was to capture that feeling, and fast. The plan was to mix it in LA, but it turned out that all the magic was there in the rough mixes I did as we went along – so that is what you hear. I think that’s why it’s such an immediate record, because it really was completed in those two weeks... but with a lifetime of preparation, of course.”

The rawness of the recording reflects the subject matter and provides the perfect accompaniment to Sarabeth’s voice, which seems stronger, more confident and more crystalline than ever, like Karen Dalton or a less histrionic Cat Power, as she deftly conveys her grief with an eloquent, understated majesty. The musical reference points of the first album – Neil Young, Dylan, The Velvet Underground, Big Star – are still there, but somehow amplified, and Sarabeth is definitely not looking towards the current music scene for inspiration. “It’s odd how placid a lot of music seems now; so washed out in sound and feeling,” she says. “It’s like antidepressant music to take antidepressants to. I don’t really give a shit. I am more likely to buy a new book now than a new record.”

This would explain the number of literary references on Get Well Soon. The opening track "The Wound And The Bow" is named after a book of essays by Edmund Wilson, in which Sarabeth discovered and subsequently became obsessed with the myth of Philoctetes, a play by Sophocles in which the protagonist suffers a wound so grotesque that he is left alone on an island to live in a cave and tend to his injuries. The title of "Exit Ghost" was taken from the Philip Roth novel, but he appropriated it from ‘Hamlet’, where it is written as a stage direction. “The scene when Hamlet sees his father’s ghost became lodged in my head,” explains Sarabeth. “And his subsequent madness I understood in a more personal way.”

The narrative ends with the title track and a resolution of sorts. “I feel like I’m either the patient or the doctor, somebody always has an ache,” she says. “When I wrote the title track I had a friend of mine on my mind. She was so sad... just inconsolable and it was painful to see her like that. The title is a reminder to keep myself well. It’s hard to explain the ferocity of the grief I experienced when my father died. I really felt like it was going to kill me, so to be here... well, I just wanted to remind myself of what I survived.”

New York, NY - When it comes to hotbeds for indie music culture, Italy probably isn't the first place that comes to peoples' minds. But with all three of The R's members originating from Brescia, Italy, that reputation is about to change.

Their sound is an encapsulation of time. Rock and folk influences from the 1950s up to the present day can be found in The R's addictive indie tracks. From the a-side of one of two soon-to-be-released 7-inch records, "Easy Way Out" is an upbeat blend of '70's FM radio and contemporary folk. Flip over to the b-side and you'll find a modern indie-pop vibe infested with catchy hints of reverb-coated 1960s surf rock. The band lands in New York City on June 13 for a series of NYC gigs including one at Bruar Falls in Brooklyn on June 14th and another at Pianos in Manhattan on June 16th.

And the appeal is obvious. The R's won a music contest sponsored by Italy's most widely read newspaper back in 2007 and released their first EP. Since then, the Italian band have released the album Money's On Fire, collaborating with producer Giovanni Ferrario (P.J. Harvey), and gained a large following in their home country after being featured on a major national advertising campaign and receiving exposure on MTV Italy.

The subsequent 7-inch that they will be releasing features the expertly-crafted track "I Love My Family." Its bright chord progression jumps with each staccato strum and is accompanied by a hopping and syncopated percussive rhythm. There are trails of Elvis Presley in the articulation of Pierluigi Ballarin's lead vocal lines, and the track is soaked in punk rock inspiration. The R's are now signed to Nat Geo Music, the record label of the National Geographic Society, and are preparing to make their U.S. debut in the late Spring with the release of their latest album De Flora Et Fauna.

Creating mind-blowing sonic sprawl in perfect, 3 minute pop songs, Seattle's The Night Beats premiere album track "Dial 666" on RCRD LBL

“Dial 666” by Night Beats could go on for another ten minutes as far as we’re concerned, but its less than two-minute running time makes it all the more appealing for playing hard to get. It’s kind of astonishing that the song is off of their forthcoming self-titled LP, out June 28 from Trouble In Mind, and not, you know, the summe r of 1967, with the kind of murky, overblown production so prevalent on the Nuggets boxset. That’s not to say the song is a genre experiment, or even a loving tribute to the golden age of AM radio, just further proof that sometimes all you need is three chords, guitar, bass, drums—and maybe an Ibanez Tubescreamer—to make a killer pop song.
