Chicago's Smith Westerns will release its sophomore LP, Dye It Blonde, on Fat Possum on Jan. 18. The record was produced by Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, !!!, TVOTR, Beach House, etc.) in New York City. The band has already won wide acclaim based on its self-titled debut, originally released in 2009 via the Chicago label HoZac while all of the band members were still enrolled in high school. The band just wrapped a European tour with MGMT, and has announced a slew of early 2011 dates, including a NYC date on the day their record drops, and later dates with the UK band and Fat Possum labelmates Yuck.
""Her tears are never-ending," frontman Cullen Omori sings with a affectation, later asking, "Do you think/ It is normal/ To go through life/ Oh so formal?" He's talking to a girl, of course, and given the song's title, it's easy to assume he's about to kick out some "The Boys Are Back in Town"-level sentiments about hanging out, drinking, and partying Friday through Sunday. THE GREENCARDS SIGN WITH NEW FRONTIER TOURING
Nashville Based Rootsy Folk Ensemble Plan To Release New Music in 2011
Nashville, TN— Rootsy Folk Ensemble The Greencards have signed with Nashville based New Frontier Touring for exclusive booking representation, with industry veteran Logan Bosemer as the group’s responsible agent. “I have long been a fan of The Greencards, and this move makes complete sense,” said Bosemer. “They are a perfect fit with our roster and I jumped at the chance to work with such a great group of people.”
With two Australian founding members, The Greencards are probably the least likely Austin-formed/Nashville-based band you've ever heard. Their love and respect for Americana, Bluegrass, Jazz and Country brought them together in 2003 and they have since toured every inch of North America including stints with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson.
The band earned the Americana Music Award in 2006 for "Emerging Artist of the Year" and landed Grammy nominations in 2008 and 2010 for "Best Country Instrumental Performance". Their urge to challenge themselves and test the limits of any established genre guided The Greencards--singer/bassist Carol Young and multi-instrumentalist Kym Warner-- from Australia. Their meticulously crafted arrangements serve as springboards for exhilarating improvisations.
Recent appearances on Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Cayamo Cruise, Austin City Limits Festival, Lollapalooza and Merlefest have rounded out a very busy time for the band, and they head into the studio in early 2011 to begin their next great album adventure. Colin Stetson is a horn player of uncommon strength, skill and genre-defying creativity. He composes and performs otherworldly songs that combine a mastery of circular breathing technique with percussive valve-work and reed vocalisations, making a polyphonic solo music that combines influences as diverse as Bach, early metal, American pre-war Gospel, and the explorations of Jimi Hendrix, Peter Brotzman and Albert Ayler.
New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges is Stetson's second solo record and his first for Constellation. Colin has been making his mark as a staggering solo performer for several years now, in front of audiences small and large, from intimate jazz and experimental music venues to big stages, whether opening for Arcade Fire or The National, or playing at jazz and new music festivals like Moers and London Jazz. His talents have been widely recognised and employed by artists as diverse as Tom Waits, Laurie Anderson, TV On The Radio and Bon Iver. Colin also plays in Belle Orchestre and Sway Machinery.
The music on New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges was captured entirely live in single takes at Montréal's Hotel2Tango studio, with no overdubs or looping, using over 20 mics positioned close and far throughout the live room. Guest vocals by Laurie Anderson and Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) are the only exceptions to this rule, along with one brief french horn that was multi-tracked.
The Judges sessions were co-produced by Stetson and Shahzad Ismaily and engineered by Efrim Menuck at the Hotel2Tango, then taken to Greenhouse StudiosBen Frost. in Reykjavik and mixed by
The result is a highly original, experimental, euphoric record that fires on all levels: a document of an astoundingly strong and gifted player; a compositional tour-de-force; and a studio production bursting with intensity and inventiveness.
New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges features cover art by Tracy Maurice and will be issued on CD in custom 100% recycled paperboard gatefold jacket and on 180gLP with a limited edition screenprinted poster contained in the first pressing. The album will also be available digitally.

Described as a mix of Don Caballero, the Minutemen, Refused, and Upsilon Acrux, Brooklyn by way of Seattle's X-Ray Press brings intricate, high-energy music to the thinking man. Beyond their creative compositions and musicianship lies an unconventional but undeniable melody. They incorporate genres from post-hardcore to jazz, and push the framework of what a math-rock band can and should be. UVB-76 is the new album from X-Ray Press, and will be released next Tuesday, January 11th, 2011 on cd + digital download.
AOL Spinner will be streaming the 18-track journey in its entirety next week, and the album is a nice mix of melody, dissonance, and progressive breakdowns, with smarts, introspection, and humor thrown in at times. The album is a huge step forward in artistic sophistication and shows X-Ray Press expanding on the groundwork laid out in their 2007 debut release, ep1 brkn type, which was released on Tellous Records.
The band has also finalized their entire run of west coast tour dates from late January through February, which can be found below as well.

Beats Antique Release New Years Eve Countdown Remix Blind Threshold Out Now
Growing like wildfire under the canopy of live electonica and world roots music comes a masterful merge of modern technology, live instrumentation and seductive performance, built of brass bands and glitch, string quartets and dubstep: the musical trio Beats Antique.
Since the group’s inception from the eclectic underground of San Francsico’s performance art scene, Beats Antique has been notorious for making it nearly impossible to sit still. They meld their mediums as attentively as they fuse the cultures that inspire their sound. All self produced and composed, the trio creates a unique collage: an animalistic, raw musical event that blurs the lines between the provocative, the spiritual, and the artistic, while still maintaining an allegiance to the muses of class and beauty.
The journey that led to Beats Antique today was a winding and twisted path from the west coast to the ancient trade routes of the silk road. In this modern incarnation, the musical alliance of producers David Satori and Tommy Cappel is inspired and emphasized by their collaborative partnership with world-renowned belly dance performer and music producer Zoe Jakes.
David Satori and Tommy Cappel both trained classically before venturing to locations such as Bali, West Africa, Serbia and beyond. With extensive backgrounds in multicultural music production, and the passports to prove it, Satori and Cappel command the spectrum of live and digital instrumentation, born from Hip Hop and old school jazz.
Zoe Jakes adds a third dimension as the multi –cultural and –disciplinary dance counterpart to Beats Antique’s sound. Jakes has worked with 2 major dance troupes, Miles Copeland’s Bellydance Superstars and Rachel Brice’s Indigo Belly Dance Company, a student of ballet and contemporary techniques. Jake’s additional history with Cappel in the Extra Action Marching Band and the Yard Dogs Road Show grants some insight into the caliber of performance that is Beats Antique’s standard.
All of this sets the scene for Beats Antique’s overtly ambitious stage show, a sensory overload conquest of the festival circuit’s most riotous events, such as Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits festival, and Outside Lands, as well as a catalog of proper tours that include Bassnectar and a recent run with Les Claypool of PRIMUS in early 2010. According to Satori, the trio is excited by their ability to create a huge sound from their relatively small setup. “It gives us this whole new world of musical opportunities that we’re just starting to scratch the surface of.”
In a prolific 3 years since Beats Antique emerged, the group has released 2 albums and a pair of EPs, with a third album, Blind Threshold, on the way. Notable features of the new release include vaporous violins and Danny Elfman-esque dementia; glitchy, laser-guided harmonica provided by Blues Traveler frontman John Popper; and 2 very different vocal tracks that range between restless pop hooks and vibrant Eastern European dance loops. All wrapped into an intricate collection of heavy beats and sub bass.
Beats Antique is best imagined as an innovative creature built from the cumulative heritage of the world’s music chasing its tail. The Sounds' Fourth Full-Length, Something To Die For, Due March 29 On New Label Home SideOneDummy Records
With three albums under their belts, Swedish new wave sensations The Sounds have taken a new approach for their forthcoming album, Something To Die For, due March 29, 2011, making it the first album to be produced by the band. This new chapter also marks a new partnership for the quintet, with Los Angeles-based SideOneDummy Records, who have joint-ventured with the band's own Arnioki Records. "We could not be more proud to announce The Sounds as our first release of the decade," offers Bill Armstrong, co-owner of SideOneDummy. "After hearing the new record and spending some quality time with the band, we can't think of a better group of people to start the year off with."
Nearly ten years after the release of their debut, Living In America, The Sounds embraced their acquired skills as well as their fierce independence, determined to make an album they collectively deemed entirely The Sounds: a creation indicative of a particular sound, sans any outside influence. While their last two albums were recorded in the U.S. with outside producers, the band retreated to their own studio in Malmo, Sweden to write, produce and record, assisted by engineer Brian Virtue. The album was ultimately mixed by Mark Needham. Nearly ten years after the release of their debut, Living In America, The Sounds embraced their acquired skills as well as their fierce independence, determined to make an album they collectively deemed entirely The Sounds: a creation indicative of a particular sound, sans any outside influence. While their last two albums were recorded in the U.S. with outside producers, the band retreated to their own studio in Malmo, Sweden to write, produce and record, assisted by engineer Brian Virtue. The album was ultimately mixed by Mark Needham. Alex Winston was given her first guitar when she was 7. When her Dad’s advances to teach music to her older brother fell on deaf ears, she was gladly the runner up. Sitting in the basement for hours practicing chord progressions and listening to songwriters like Carole King and Laura Nyro, she was taught the importance of her home city of Detroit’s musical history.
Classically trained in opera and bred on musical Americana, the beautiful Detroit-native would listen to the rock of Iggy Pop and The Stooges, The MC5 and the legendary Motown artists in equal measures. She opted out of college when she was given the opportunity to tour the US, and to this day still cherishes opening for Chuck Berry in St Louis.
Alex moved to New York earlier in 2010 and her upcoming mini LP, Sister Wife, has been produced by hot young New York producers The Knocks and Londoner Charlie Hugall (Florence and the Machine).

CARA JEAN WAHLERS RELEASES DEBUT ALBUM, GOODNIGHT CHARLOTTE
When Cara Jean Wahlers began putting together a collection of her original music in 2006, she soon realized that something was missing. “I knew I didn't want to just do it by myself,” Wahlers says, “but I also didn't want the typical rock band feel.” A year later, the Indiana-based singer/songwriter discovered what she was looking for when she watched veteran cellist Grover Parido perform with Blueprint Music at the Indianapolis Art Center's Riverfront Amphitheatre. “I was just really moved by him,” Wahlers recalls. “He's a very expressive cellist. with wonderful tone and sensibility.” Soon after, Parido joined Wahlers in the studio and the duo began recording Goodnight Charlotte, a hauntingly beautiful debut album that has moved critics and fans alike since its release this past summer.&nb sp; In fact, the album has landed in various 2010 Top 10 lists in Indianapolis and beyond—in the Indy Star, NUVO and Musical Family Tree. Wahlers was also mentioned as a “leader of the pack for 2011” by Dodge from tastemaker site My Old Kentucky Blog.
“(I am) not sure if anyone will make a smarter, lovelier record in 2010,” writes NUVO Newsweekly’s Rob Nichols of Goodnight Charlotte (Nichols just gave it his nod for best album of 2010). “Wahlers and Parido have created an intelligent and gentle record, heartfelt and soulful in its quiet beauty.” Indeed, the collaboration between the two musicians worked out better than either could have hoped, with Parido’s work on the cello, piano and bass seamlessly weaving its way throughout Wahlers’ delicate vocals and acoustic backdrop. “I think we've got a really interesting combination,” Parido says. “Cara's lyrics are very theatrical and visual. That lends itself to the style of cello I play. I'm able to underscore a lot of these images she's presenting.”
For Wahlers, who began playing music and writing songs at an early age, Goodnight Charlotte represents the next step in her promising career. A fourth-generation musician who’s played everything from the accordion and banjo to the auto harp and washboard, Wahlers has drawn comparisons to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams. Together with Parido, Wahlers also provided the score and three songs for the independent feature-length film, “Paradise Recovered,” which was recently released.
All in all, it’s been a memorable year for Wahlers and Parido, highlighted by the success of Goodnight Charlotte. “I wrote these songs almost in a woodshedding kind of situation, where I sort of shut out all the noises that aren't coming from inside of me,” Wahlers says. “It's very personal and I think that intimacy is reflected in the album.”

Something small and quiet at first, the Sacramento, CA based Sister Crayon began with vocalist Terra Lopez playing classical guitar and pre-programmed beats on a loop pedal to attentive house party crowds. With the addition of members Dani Fernandez, Jeffrey LaTour, and Nicholas Suhr, Sister Crayon emerged seamlessly melding haunting balladry, rich analog textures, and a rhythmic prowess informed by trip-hop and krautrock. Despite the music's dark, melancholy nature, there's a sweetness and charisma about Lopez that immediately strikes a chord with audiences.
Live, the four-piece uses a combination of samplers, guitar, synths, and live percussion to lay down a steady foundation as Lopez builds and breaks down the songs, alternating between a hip-hop inflected cadence and a spectral croon. In the past year, Sister Crayon has created quite a stir with their inspiring performances playing alongside folks like Baths, School of Seven Bells, Busdriver, Warpaint (who they put a split 7-inch out with), Truckasaurus, among many others in their brief existence as a band.
Their forthcoming debut full-length "Bellow" is full of juxtapositions that inexplicably work well together: woeful yet triumphant, expanse but also intimate. The inspiration for "Bellow" derives from a few places, namely the writer Fernando Pessoa who had a large influence on the record. His curiosity and writings on death, homosexuality, longing, and general despair was the muse for the mood and tone, a tension that is present throughout.
The record is a representation of the evolution of Sister Crayon from the solo beginnings of quiet, dark songwriting to the powerful, dynamic, full band construction. One out of many standouts, "Anti Psalm" is an ode to religious antics and absent fathers weaving 808 beats with analog synths while Lopez's vocals (along with guest vocalists Jules Baenziger of Sea of Bees and Caitlin Gutenberger of Two Sheds) create haunting doo-wop harmonies. "Stem", a moody track that ebbs and flows, creating a wave of synths, piano, drums, and an eight person choral chant mid-song. Other standouts are the galloping "I'm Still The Same Person" and the head-nodding R&B swagger of "(In) Reverse", which showcases the band's electronic leanings with pulsing MPC beats, trippy analog sequencers, and manic vocal layers.
A refreshing change from a lot of contemporary music, what you get with Sister Crayon is sincerity, thoughtfulness, beauty, wisdom, joy, and (perhaps, best of all) music that should be at once pondered and cherished. Stumbling onto Sister Crayon is like finding a book of apocalyptic poetry in the confessional booth of an old, burned out cathedral.
