The Pains of Being Pure At Heart had quite a run over the last twenty two months. They released their self-titled debut in Feb. 2009 to universal acclaim, racking up features in magazines like Spin, Rolling Stone and NME, earning Best New Music status from Pitchfork, and touring the US and Europe non-stop. Now the band has announced a major Spring tour in support of its sophomore album, Belong, due in late March on Slumberland with amazing support bands Twin Shadow (4AD) and Catwalk (Captured Tracks) joining them for select portions of the tour.
All the while they've been working on new songs, releasing the excellent single "Say No To Love" in June 2010 and beginning work on their eagerly-anticipated second album. To help bring this new batch of tunes to life they've enlisted the help of producer Flood (Smashing Pumpkins, U2, PJ Harvey) and ace mixer Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Ride). The result is a massive sounding album, sonically ambitious but still grounded in the peerless song-craft that The Pains are known for.
"Heart In Your Heartbreak" is the first preview from the new album, and it's a perfect snapshot of where the Pains are headed in 2011. An infectious slice of chunky power-pop with a great beat, sweeping synths and well-placed guitar jangle, it's immediately obvious that the new production team has brought out the best in the band. It's pure Pains all the way, but bolder, louder and more confident. On the flip, non-LP track "The One" is a classic-sounding rocker that would sit just fine next to Teenage Fanclub on any well-compiled mix tape. All in all a superb single and a great taster for that second album, due for release in March 2011.

Portland's Loch Lomond are bringing their acclaimed brand of symphonic chamber pop to the growing Portland label/media arts collective/store/gallery, Tender Loving Empire, with their much anticipated second full length Little Me Will Start A Storm set for release on Tuesday, February 22nd (cd, vinyl, and digital.) The stunning track "Elephants & Little Girls," the first single, is available as a free download and was also featured on Brooklyn Vegan alongside their past tour mates, The Decemberists.
Tender Loving Empire recently unveiled a new preview video for the album as well, which features the intro track from the album -- an updated version of "Blue Lead Fences," which fans may be familiar with from a previous version. Lastly, Red Bull recently featured the Loch Lomond track "Wax & Wire" (taken from the previous 'Night Bats' EP) in the recent short film/riding video for new riding clip featuring Danny MacAskill, following him on a journey from Edinburgh back to his hometown Dunvegan, in the Isle of Skye. The video recently cracked an unbelievable 3 million views on YouTube.
In addition to employing notable visceral and expert melodic acrobatics, the co-ed sextet of Loch Lomond distinctly incorporates the use of harmonic vocals, mandolin, theremin, bass clarinet, and all manner of exclamatory percussion minutia to foil the even more distinct and arresting voice of lead singer/multi-instrumentalist Ritchie Young. The new album was mixed by Adam Selzer (who has recorded all of M Ward's records), Tucker Martine (Laura Veirs, The Decemberists), and Kevin Robinson (of Viva Voce).
The band's record release show will be on Saturday, February 26th at the Alberta Rose Theater, and they also will be playing alongside Damien Jurado and Viva Voce in Seattle and Bend, OR as well.

In conjunction with the release of AMON AMARTH’s Surtur Rising full-length, slated for release this March via Metal Blade Records, MetalSucks has launched the official Viking beard contest! Inspired by the magnificent mane of vocalist Johan Hegg, the contest will run from now until the record’s release date and be judged by the folks at MetalSucks and the band.

Step 2) Grow a beard.

Following the October 2010 release of their debut album, Beauregard, on Kanine Records, Pepper Rabbit spent the fall touring the US with Cotton Jones, hitting CMJ, followed by a trek across Canada with Rural Alberta Advantage, and then finishing out the year on the west coast supporting Passion Pit and Freelance Whales.
Xander Singh and Luc Laurent originally met in Boston, where the two began making music together. They then recorded their debut LP, Beauregard, in New Orleans, and chose to make their live debut in India before settling in Los Angeles. Recently, the band has earned high praises from both peers and press, receiving coverage in Under The Radar, Seattle’s KEXP, New York’s WNYC, Blackbook and a feature in FILTER.

Athens, GA's Easter Island to release Better Things on March 1st, 2011!

Easter Island‘s progressive sound is re-forging the middle-class angst pop that defined the mid 90s and early 00s. This impressive group of classically trained guys hail from Athens, GA and have been playing together in a carousel of revolving bands since 2005, when vocalist Ethan Payne met lead guitarist Nathan Thompson. Payne (formerly of The Cubs, Union & Corduroy Road) has worked in the film industry for the past three years as a freelance shooter/editor/boom operator. Recently, he produced Athens Soundies: a series of lo-fi music videos featuring mostly local musicians and touring bands passing through, inspired by Vincent Moon’s takeaway shows.
Their love for creating music evolved from college bands to mature sounds and when Payne’s brother Asher Payne (vocalist and pianist) moved to Athens to pursue a Master’s in vocal performance, Easter Island was born. As drummer John Cable (The Corduroy Road and Moses Gunn) and bassist Andrew Terrell joined the band, the puzzle for the perfect mix was complete. Their balance of calculated chaos, inspired by passage into their mid-20’s, yuppie adulthood and love gone awry, forms an addictive sound that is just reminiscent enough of 90s pop to create a sentimental familiarity that is surprisingly easy to listen to.
As Easter Island forges a following in the South, their EP Better Things will be released this March. Better Things was produced by Five-Eight drummer Patrick Ferguson, at the newly renovated and reopened 1093 Boulevard Studio in Athens. They have already begun work on their next release, full of even more delicious sounds, galvanizing lyrics, and their emotive vocals.

MTV has officially added “Dignity” and named New Politics as one of their "2011 Artists To Watch". In the upcoming weeks “Dignity" will be featured in Artist to Watch countdowns across MTV AMTV, MTV2, mtvU, and MTV Hits. In addition, they are currently featured in an Artists To Watch PUSH campaign. New Politics are also MTV's "Posted" artist for the entire month of January. Casiotones + Melodicas + Brazil = Some Community
Music often goes beyond melodies, harmonies, arrangements, lyrics and live performances. There's that one thing that no artist in the world can manufacture formulaically, and that something is energy. This invisible thing that comes directly from the veins, throats, and pores of the musician seeps from Brazil’s most promising indie-rock band, Some Community. Forming in 2009 the five piece that met in Prep School, has been combining delicious songs with an exciting presentation, and will drop a musical bomb on this years SxSW, so get ready.
The band consists of Juliana Vacaro who delivers charming and delirious vocals as well as: Veronica Vacaro (keyboards and guitar), Marco Frugiuele (percussion), Gabriela Gonzalez (guitar), and Fernando Fernandes, who brings lead guitar to the mix. Portland's Starfucker (STRFKR) has received almost as much attention for its moniker as for its immensely accessible dance hooks. Now that the group's name has finally settled on STRFKR after flirting briefly with a few alternatives, however, the focus can rightly return to the quartet's unique brand of endlessly catchy, addictive pop. And there's no better place for that to begin than with Reptilians, the bands second album and first with Polyvinyl, due out March 8. As with the bands previous albums, Reptilians was written almost entirely by principal songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joshua Hodges. This time around, however, STRFKR's sound is also bolstered by the addition of Keil Corcoran (whom Hodges describes as a human drum machine) and producer Jacob Portrait (The Dandy Warhols, Mint Chicks).
Reptilians focuses primarily on the epic subjects of death and the end of the world, two intertwined subjects at the forefront of songwriter Josh Hodges' mind following the passing of his grandmother. However, the tone of the record stays out of the doldrums, taking a page from British philosopher Alan Watts (whose lectures are excerpted at various intervals), who proposed death is essential as it lends meaning to life.
With vibrant crescendos, explosive drum beats, and layered melodies that fuel a truly enthusiastic, theatrical live show (dates to be announced shortly), Reptilians is decidedly STRFKR's most well-rounded and full-sounding album to date -- a buoyant affair that will somehow have you dancing to songs about death and too busy enjoying it to mind.
