Apteka debut track from LP "Gargoyle Days" on Dumbing of America, prepare for album release
Apteka debut "Striking Violet" from upcoming LP Gargoyle Days on Dumbing of America.
Their songs build in a crescendo of sweat and beauty, creating epic landscapes that have left me with permanent goosebumps...
Embracing the coming darkness of a Chicago winter, Apteka's debut LP, Gargoyle Days
is awash in captivating reverb, swirling melodies and soaring,
anthemic refrains and the release is celebrated with a special, Chicago
Halloween show.
with Sybris, The Bingers, Touched by Ghoul

Watch the release video for Gargoyle Days to hear the title track from the new LP.
For more music, check out this video featuring Apteka scoring Shepard Fairey and Obey and give a listen to the release named one of the Top 2010 albums from Chicago Indies by the Chicago Tribune, the Traitors 7".
Press praise for Apteka
With
a heady mix of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the epiphanal rush of
shoegaze, with the intensity of Jane’s Addiction they’re truly the
great band that’s flown under your radar too long.
The Dumbing of America
An increasingly commanding quartet that embraces the power of guitar drone, tribal drumming and the deep, shoegaze-era swoon.
Chicago Tribune, Traitors 7” Top 2010 albums from Chicago Indies
If
snowstorms shed sparks or cicadas caught fire. If you longed so much
for something that you could never sleep again. Or if all your friends
started playing electric guitars at once.
Said the Gramophone
With
its chiming guitar, churning rhythms, expansive atmospherics, and
keening, melodic vocals, the song presses the same buttons as classic
Ride. I expect good things from this band, and soon.
Chicago Reader
This
scrappy Chicago rock band takes the DIY-values of Pavement, the
wide-eyed excitability of Dinosaur Jr. and the frantic, flourished
drumming of Keith Moon, tosses it all into a blended, and slathers it
with a thick coating of shoegazer fuzz that would make My Bloody
Valentine proud…a sonic maelstrom of energy blasting through your
speakers, all teetering guitar and an ambiance that makes it sound as
if it was recorded during the middle of a huge blizzard.
The Brown Noise
Apteka
weaves a curious star bound tapestry that falls between the generic
staples of shoe gaze, tear arsing shimmer toned power pop and fringe
flicking shade adorned lysergic psyche groove, the thumping ‘cicada
song’ sound like a wired and antagonised early career Ride
re-sculpturing discarded Barrett Floyd / 13th Floor Elevators motifs
while ‘the sheet’ it seems is currently streets ahead on the listening
count though sadly the blighter refused to play for us - gremlins in
the machinery I gather.
Losing Today
Take the breathiness of Stoned And Dethroned
era Jesus and Mary Chain and English shoegazer harmonies, along with
an album-consistent palpitating beat. Best of all is the way the whole
track leads somewhere - soft beginnings to strongly strummed reverb
drenched guitars, to fierce and sheathing keys, to - finally - an
amalgamation of all the above. This song, in particular, is four
minutes of satisfaction.

A Winged Victory for the Sullen (Adam Wiltzie of Stars of the Lid + Dustin O'Halloran) Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow
A WINGED VICTORY FOR THE SULLEN
TOUR KICKS OFF TOMORROW
Listen to "Steep Hills of Vicodin Tears" via Pitchfork:
"Four Stars. Genuinely moving. Another victory for the Post-Classical scene." - Uncut
"It's an immersive, and inevitably cinematic, ambient gem." - MOJO
"A celestial incantation to silence all commotion." - Drowned in Sound
LOS ANGELES, CA - October 28, 2011 - A Winged Victory for the Sullen, the collaboration of Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie of ambient drone outfit Stars of the Lid and pianist/composer Dustin O'Halloran, will begin their first-ever North American tour tomorrow, October 29 at St. Mary's Hamilton Village in Philadelphia. The group will perform music from their acclaimed self-titled debut album, which was released on Kranky to great critical acclaim in September. The duo will switch off between piano and guitar and be accompanied by ACME (American Contemporary Music Ensemble). Video projections will be provided by Christina Vantzou and support will come from fellow Kranky acts Benoit Piolard and Ken Camden.
A
Winged Victory For the Sullen is the first installment of the
new collaboration between Stars of the Lid founder Adam Bryanbaum
Wiltzie and composer Dustin O'Halloran. The duo agreed to leave their
normal home studio comfort zone and develop the recordings with the help
of large acoustic spaces, and to hunt down a selection of 9ft grand
pianos that had the ability to deliver extreme sonic low end. Other
traditional instrumentation was used including string quartet, French
horn, and bassoon, but always juxtaposed is the sound of drifting
guitar washed melodies. The recordings began in one late night
session in the famed Grunewald Church in west Berlin on a 1950s imperial
Boesendorfer piano and strings were added in the historic East Berlin
DDR radio studios along the River Spree. One last final session in a
private studio deep in the norther cusp of Italy on a handmade Fazioli
piano, and the final mixes took place in a 17th century villa near
Ferrara, Italy, with the assistance of Francesco Donadello. All songs
were processed completely analogue straight to magnetic tape.
Their secret to harvesting new melodic structures from the thin air of existence was for
the
duo to push themselves to live dangerously, realizing that clear
thinking at the wrong moment could stifle the compositions. The final
result is seven landscapes of harmonic replicating ingemination. In
"Requiem for the Static King Part 1" (created in memory of the untimely
passing of Mark Linkous) they have taken the age old idea of a string
quartet and then shot it out a cannon to reveal exquisite new levels of
mellow bliss. Of the 13 minute track "Symphony Pathétique," Wiltzie says
"after almost 20 years of struggling to create interesting
ambient drone music, I feel like I have finally figured out what I am
doing." Notable guest musicians include Icelandic cellist Hildur Gudnadottir, and violinist Peter Broderick. A Winged Victory for the Sullen is not a side project. This is the future of the late night record you have always dreamed of.

Streetlight Manifesto/Lionize/Rodeo Ruby Love Hit the Road with Reel Big Fish for Winter of 2011 Tour!

Pentimento Music Company bands Streetlight Manifesto, Lionize, and Rodeo Ruby Love have announced they will embark on the Winter Tour 2011 together with Reel Big Fish.
The tour, which kicks off November 21 in Lancaster, PA, sees the bands
winding throughout small markets across the country for four weeks, and
is a continuation of the successful Streetlight Manifesto/Reel Big Fish
summer tour. Lionize and Rodeo Ruby Love will be documenting the tour
on the site AbsolutePunk.net, with photos, videos, and insightful updates for all the world to see.
Streetlight Manifesto has spent
much of 2011 touring the country in support of their previous releases.
Frontman Tomas Kalnoky is set to release the album Streetlight Lullabies on November 22, 2011 under the name Toh Kay,
which features 10 Streetlight Manifest songs stripped-down to their
acoustic bones. The band is currently working on their next album,
tentatively scheduled for a late spring 2012 release. Streetlight
Manifesto has paired with the charity Alex's Lemonade Stand for their Goodwill Guestlist Project
this tour. The band sells 4 guestlist spots at each of their shows to
create the Goodwill Guestlist, with all the money from these sales going
to a charity; last tour's recipient was Project Night Night. These tickets are available for purchase via email at streetlightinfo@riscmail.com
Lionize, fresh off the road from a fall tour with friends Larry and His Flask
that was sadly forced to end abruptly, bring a sound to the tour which
defies classification. Influenced by reggae, 70s rock, and punk, these
road warriors spent the past summer on the Vans Warped Tour and are on the verge of releasing a new album. Expect much exciting news to come from this band in the next few months.
Rodeo Ruby Love plays rowdy, feel-good, toe-tapping music. This Is Why We Don't Have Nice Things,
their debut release on Pentimento was re-released late this fall, and
the band is ready to tackle the road in support of it. But just in case
you think that musical talent is the only thing this band has going...
Ben Claghorn, the band's bassist, recently had a hilarious web short of
his featured on Comedy Central's Tosh.0 which you can view here.

BUDDY HOLLY: LISTEN TO ME / THE ULTIMATE BUDDY PARTY December 2011 on PBS
Historic Concert Features Paul Anka, Peter Asher, Michelle Branch, Cobra Starship, Shawn Colvin, Chris Isaak, Lyle Lovett, Raul Malo, Graham Nash, Stevie Nicks, Boz Scaggs, and Patrick Stump; Special Guest Appearances by Phil Everly, James Burton, Albert Lee; Featured Tributes by Keith Richards, Ringo Starr, Brian Wilson, Imelda May, And More –
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dA_0v78e_fw
BUDDY HOLLY: LISTEN TO ME / THE ULTIMATE BUDDY PARTY, an extraordinary concert event held at The Music Box in Hollywood on what would have been Buddy’s 75th birthday (September 7th), is available only through PBS, beginning this December. Offering viewers a front row seat for this once-in-a-lifetime concert, BUDDY HOLLY: LISTEN TO ME is part of special programming premiering on PBS stations beginning December 3, 2011 ( check local listings).
Produced by Songmasters, the all-star tribute proved an historic rock ‘n’ roll moment, with an incredible line-up of performers including Stevie Nicks, Chris Isaak, Lyle Lovett, Raul Malo, and Graham Nash — rocking the house in the company of a host of superstar guests. Among them were such avowed Holly fans as Paul Anka, Boz Scaggs, Shawn Colvin, Patrick Stump, Cobra Starship’s Gabe Saporta and Victoria Asher,
Michelle Branch, and famed guitar slingers James Burton and Albert Lee. The amazing finale featured all performers in the show in a rousing rendition of Holly’s best-known song, “That’ll Be The Day.”
As if all that weren’t enough, a series of live and video tributes were featured throughout the show, including homages to Holly from Keith Richards, Ringo Starr, Jackson Browne, Brian Wilson, Pat Monahan (of Train), Imelda May, and the one and only Eric Idle of Monty Python’s Flying Circus fame.
Peter Asher, producer of the Listen to Me: Buddy Holly album (and musical legend in his own right) is the evening’s host and music supervisor. He is joined by Chris Isaak as co-host and performer. Asher assembled an incomparable all-star “house-band” led by Waddy Wachtel — one of rock’s most acclaimed guitarists and musical directors. With their superb musicianship the performers gave energized, sometimes moving, always modern, authentic and unique interpretations of Holly’s most enduring and iconic songs. Adding to the magic of this musical celebration are other friends and family from Buddy Holly’s life, including Maria Elena Holly and Phil Everly, making what may well be his last public musical appearance.
Asher’s personal connection to Holly’s music goes back to 1965, when Peter & Gordon’s timeless cover of “True Love Ways” proved a massive hit both here and in the U.K. In addition, Asher produced Linda Ronstadt’s smash renditions of “It’s So Easy” and “That’ll Be The Day,” both of which served to further bolster the amazing durability of Holly’s legacy. Songmasters’ Listen to Me: Buddy Holly album features 15 entirely new versions of Buddy’s most iconic songs by leading artists, many of whom participated in this special concert.
“Buddy showed us how brilliant and unforgettable songs could be written using the simplest of chords,” says Asher. “He taught us the value of a lyric which came from the heart and the importance of making records the way you heard them in your head. His music has never ceased to play a major role in my life and work.”
