The band has amassed a devoted national following after years of touring, critically lauded releases, and of course, their sensory stimulating live shows.

2014 is destined to be a banner year for the ‘BEARS! with the band hitting the Spring festival circuit, celebrating a 5-year anniversary with a limited vinyl issue of their much-loved 2009 EP Dream Happy Dreams, participation in the upcoming Flaming Lips-curated Sgt. Pepper’s tribute album (along side MGMT, My Morning Jacket, Phantogram and Miley Cyrus), and of course the much anticipated release of their second full-length Future Sounds on boutique indie label New Granada (Tampa, FL).

The vinyl is a picture disc that animates if you film at 25 frames per second or hold a strobe over the disc at 25 frames per second. But who, you ask, has one of them strobes just laying around? Well, you're about to! The band also developed an iPhone app, "Sunbears Psychedelic Stroboscope!" that will be on the iTunes app store any day now. The app accesses the flash on your iPhone to strobe at 25 fps. when you hold the phone over your Sunbears! Future Sounds ReANIMATED LP! The animation comes to life!! Recently upgrading from the long-standing lineup of duo Jonathan Berlin (vocals, bass, guitar, keys) and Jared Chase Bowser (drums), the band has expanded to an honest-to-goodness classic rock-n-roll lineup, welcoming JAX pals Walter Hill (guitar, keys) and Jordan Allen Davis (guitar, drum pad). This expansion affords the luxury to move and breathe, especially in the live setting.

In lieu of New York’s Singing Serpent Studio, where 2011’s You Will Live Forever was recorded, the band decided to keep it close to home, tracking the new album at Atlantic Beach studio Twin Hill Studio by ‘BEAR Walter Hill and Wesley Hill with Jeremy S.H. Griffith (of the aforementioned Singing Serpent) at the mixing board.

With tongue firmly planted in cheek, the band called the album Future Sounds reflecting the songs as sounds of the future, recorded in the past to be heard in the present. As opposed to it’s predecessor’s uplifting messages of hope, Berlin calls the new album “lyrically bleak… Mostly filled with existential quandaries on subjects that we as humans can never truly know… Like life after death, for instance… And whether or not we spend our short little lives worrying about such things.”

The Living Kills bring all the fun of garage psychedelia –instrumental freak-outs, creepy organ, 12-string guitar, lights shows, and lots of noise – but with a decidedly modern sensibility.  Unlike a lot of their peers, they aren’t trying to emulate the past, but instead recreate a vision of the 1960s that didn’t happen. On November 14th, they release a new EP, Odd Fellows Hall which will usher in a full length LP in early 2014. They’ll play an release party at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn that evening. There is a new video for the single “It Ain’t Easy” on the way as well as tour dates. 

The brainchild of songwriter, vocalist, and guitar player, Merrill Sherman, a Brooklyn transplant from Chicago and Alabama, the band was originally conceived as a meld of Paisley Underground and Jesus & Mary Chain, but instead, anchored by Sherman’s storyteller lyrics and the addition of Jennifer Bassett on organ and moog, approached something more akin to the darker trips of Roky Erickson or The Pretty Things. They wear their love of creepy B-movies, horror and spooky thrillers on their collective sleeves but chills generated are reversed by the dance party music lovers cannot refuse.

Now a five-piece, Sherman and Bassett are joined by Ross Fisher on bass (The Brides, The Zodiac Killers), Western-hailed Heron Furtwangler on guitar (GoatRopers, Whiskey Dick Mountain, LEX LOSEr), and the Tri-State area’s very own Brian Del Guercio on drums. Their combined psych superpower is mighty to behold.

Previous to Odd Fellows Hall, the band’s released their first full length, the CMJ-charting “Faceless Angels,” which was praised by Magnet Magazine for “its new yet surprisingly nostalgic tracks.”

Stereogum Says "Hello, Again" to Kittyhawk, Debut LP Now Streaming, Out 10/14/14 via Count Your Lucky Stars

Stereogum is streaming the debut full-length Hello, Again from Chicago four-piece Kittyhawk today, calling it "an impressive set of tracks that match a keen grasp of melody (both vocal and instrumental) with big, bold, dynamic song structures."

Kittyhawk play the sort of wry, dryly sweet pop songs that call to mind early 2000s bands such as Rainer Maria and The Anniversary.  Trading bass guitar for a Farfiza organ, the band is anchored by the charming l harmonies of singer Kate Grube, whose narrative lyrics push their songs forward, inviting listeners to lean in a little closer.  After the release of several split releases and a self-titled EP, the band is ready to release their debut full-length Hello, Again on Count Your Lucky Stars Records on October 14, 2014 (full tracklisting & art below).  Pre-order is now available via the Count Your Lucky Stars online store.

ANCIENT VVISDOM: Burning Ambulance Premieres New Hymn From Occult Death Rock Alchemists; New Full-Length To See Release Via Magic Bullet Next Week

Burning Ambulance is currently hosting the official premiere of "Chaos Will Reign," the second hymn from ANCIENT VVISDOM's forthcoming new full-length, Sacrificial.

Slated for release next week via Magic Bullet Records, ANCIENT VVISDOM's third long player continues to push the boundaries of both death rock and neo-folk while retaining the memorable simplicity and melodic catchiness present on their previous, critically-lauded offerings. Fusing all the prime qualities of the likes of Black Sabbath, Metallica, and Quicksand, into a wholly anthemic album of dark and light, each track comprising Sacrificial is hummable and infectious. Like the best practitioners in any field, founding vocalist Nathan Opposition and his brother Michael the Dark Angel make the execution sound easy while new addition Mitch Keith Morris wastes no time in channeling deep primitive and tribal percussive influences into the empowering sound that is unmistakably ANCIENT VVISDOM.

The Grownup Noise to Release "The Problem with Living in the Moment" Oct 28th

Since releasing their self-titled debut in 2007, Boston's The Grownup Noise has evolved into a rousing and innovative pop-music outfit, bridging the gap between americana and indie music. With lyrics written by guitarist/songwriter Paul Hansen and arrangements and instrumentation by the band as a whole, The Problem with Living in the Moment (out October 28th) came together easily despite being their most ambitious album to date. Music journalist Jed Gottlieb of the Boston Herald writes “…took three long years to follow up This Time with Feeling.  I forgive them.  You will too, once you hear the music.” The songs focus on perception vs. reality, the creative process and the struggle to integrate life, family and music into a coherent whole. 

The band recorded all over the place…in fact, if you have a cool sounding room in your house or apartment, The Grownup Noise probably recorded a little bit of ‘the problem’ there.  The entire Grownup Noise family is in on this one too: Todd Marston, Aine Fujioka, Rachel Barringer, Dave Middleton, Katie Franich, and Kyle Crane contributed to the tracks.  After the excitement, pain, self-doubt, and beauty of the recording process,Sam Kassirer (producer of Lake Street Dive, Josh Ritter, and David Wax Museum) handled the mixing duties. Feeling a bit cheated by the coffee table wisdom of always just being in the moment, this album strives for perspective, and tries to get outside and around of it’s own senses. 

The new album comes on the heels of critical success for their self-titled debut: Their single 'Carnival' won a contest judged by NYTimes Best-Selling Author and music writer Steve Almond, and was featured on NPR.  The band was also excited to learn that 'Carnival' was the most downloaded song in early April 2011 for Paste Magazine's Songs For Haiti. 

The Tucson Weekly proclaimed that The Grownup Noise are, "A band that revels in the beauty of a simple melody delivered with minimal enhancement for maximum emotional effect."  The Onion A.V. Both a local scene document, which is increasingly rare in this global age, and a bumping 80-minute non-stop dance party, Cut Copy presents: Oceans Apart is the product of the band’s observations of its hometown, where it became undeniably apparent that this fertile community was mushrooming. As frontman Dan Whitford elaborates, “we’ve always found deep inspiration in the music of our home city. It’s where Cut Copy started, as just one band in a potent community of unique and likeminded artists. But it also continues to inspire and surprise us, with great new music constantly bubbling to the surface.”

 

“The motivation behind the compilation came from a late night conversation in a Melbourne club with a friend of mine. As we excitedly shouted over the noise of the dance floor, one of us said ‘the dance scene in Melbourne has gotten so interesting over the past few years- someone should really document this!’, adding “We looked at each other knowingly, and from that moment, the idea for Oceans Apart was born.“

 

Cut Copy presents: Oceans Apart threads together a cross-section of the different party crews, label rosters & ambitious lone rangers that have been catalysts in making Melbourne vibrant & happening week in, week out- all in the format of a continuous dance mix, which is what the music was made for.

 

There’s been much speculation as to how this unprecedented wave came about. Is the fluoride in the city’s water supply having positive side effects? Is it the mediocre Melbourne weather that’s either keeping people on the dancefloor or in house arrest, tirelessly tinkering in the studio? Is it the abundance of late night venues or the long standing presence of two influential community radio stations? Or does it all come down to the appreciative audience that are just as critical as the creators? All we do know is that this epidemic can’t be stopped and needs to be celebrated.
