Pretty Lights Announces Massive 2011 Fall Tour

Pretty Lights is following up a nonstop worldwide summer festival schedule with an even more extensive fall tour that kicks off this September and runs through the end of October.

Pretty Lights’ completely unique and cutting edge electro-hiphop-soul music, accompanied by the mind blowing light and visual show, create the most intense live show experience around, and this fall it’s being done like never before.

Derek Vincent Smith (PL) has been hard at work in the studio, creating an arsenal of new tracks that will be dropped live this fall before being released. He’s been experimenting with new sounds, styles and techniques, all while keeping true to the original PL sound…and they’ll be heard first on the PL fall tour.

Along with the new music, the already majorly stepped up stage production which was debuted at Bonnaroo in June has continued to evolve, becoming more sophisticated, synchronized, and stimulating. To put it simply, the massive 3D on stage LED city and out of this world light show will leave longtime PL fans and first timers alike speechless and mesmerized.

On top of all this, Pretty Lights is teaming up with Bassnectar for two shows in Alpharetta, GA in October. The two genre pioneering producers/performers have been selling out complete tours from coast to coast on their own, making this a collaboration of epic proportions.

Pre-sale tickets available now, HERE!

Pictureplane Thee Physical Streaming Now; West Coast Tour With Javelin Announced

Pictureplane’s forthcoming album Thee Physical is streaming now on his website. Pictureplane also just announced a west coast tour with Javelin. All shows are listed below.

Pictureplane's Thee Physical will be released July 19th on Lovepump United. Produced and recorded by Egedy and mixed/co-produced by Jupiter Keyes of HEALTH, Thee Physical is a celebration of human touch in a digital world. The album is also unquestionably Pictureplane's best and most assured record to date: his vocals are confident and unnervingly sexy, the instrumentation is at once both purely electronic and surprisingly human.

Based in Denver, CO, Egedy resides in the notorious rave-punk-house Rhinoceropolis. Thanks in large part to Pictureplane's legendary shows at Rhino, his raging club night, "Real is a Feeling", and his constant stream of mixtapes and remixes, Denver's vibrant DIY scene has started to morph into a national movement. Egedy's growing influence can be felt in ways that are both trivial -- Egedy coined the ridiculous genre term "Witch House" in 2009 -- and significant: Pictureplane's punk rock-like approach to the production and dissemination of his work is democratizing electronic music the same way the Ramones, Minor Threat, and Black Flag liberated rock music in the 70s and 80s.

Pictureplane has managed to make electronic music deeply emotive--a synthesis of the human and the machine both in lyrics and sound. Summer 2011 belongs to Pictureplane.

Jackie-O Motherf*cker releases "Earth Sound System!"

Album streaming at AOL Spinner all week!

You never quite know what you’re going to get from the cult Portland, Oregon psychedelicists, Jackie-O Motherfucker. Are you going to be in for some deep brain thrombosis space rock? Are they going to prescribe you a dose of some heavily medicated camp fire drone? Will they be hitting you with some improvisational and angular free jazz? Will they be traversing the entire planet to bring you some previously unexplored global frequencies? Well, on Earth Sound System, JOMF’s 15th album since Alchemy… Shit To Gold in 1995, it’s a case of all of this and a lot, lot more.

New MP3: Jackie-O Motherfucker "Where We Go"

The band will celebrate the release of the record with a special Record Release Show at the Hollywood Theatre in Portland, OR this Thursday, July 7th. Richard Bishop and a few special guests will also grace the stage.

‘In The Willows’ starts proceedings off with banks of hazy guitars that threaten to show the chillwave youngsters where it’s at with some sun dappled riffs which lie somewhere between MV & EE’s Bummer Road and Mercury Rev’s Yerself Is Steam. But then things get much weirder and introverted with ‘Raga Joining’, which comes on like Dub Narcotic playing Indian devotional music. ‘Dedication’ is an act of freak folk shamanism, with its repetitively ritual chant of progress: “This is dedicated to the person who is trying to find the next right thing to do.” ‘Raga Separating’ soothes like the brief lucid interval in the middle of a wall crawling acid trip, with analogue synthesizer drones, languid percussion and space creating noise. But it’s all leading up to ‘Where We Go’, the ragged glory of The Butthole Surfers trampling all over J Mascis.

With as many line-ups as The Fall, Jackie-O Motherfucker has always centred round the singular if fuzzy vision of Tom Greenwood an arty psych rocker from the high Dakota Plains. But perhaps he has found some certainty in his life as the most steady line up of JO MF is back featuring brothers Nick and Jed Bindeman (Eternal Tapestry) on guitar and drums and Brian Mumford (Dragging an Ox Through Water) on guitars and home-made electronics. Brian also recorded and co-produced Earth Sound System, which also features the voice of Dana Dart-McLean, and a collaboration with visual artist Chris Johanson, who made paintings based on the music for the cover and inserts.

Going through their most stable period to date, and still with Fire Records, they are taking very local and rural elements of folk and psychedelia – the very stuff that’s been cast aside by other less inquisitive souls – and then transporting them into various new pastures, all of them designed to expand your mind.

As Tom Greenwood said recently: “Who knows if anyone has ever actually turned lead into gold, but at the core of all alchemical ideas is the concept of transformation: garbage in, lotus out. You’ll find that meditating on transformation can be a spiritual source, and as you spend time thinking about the possibilities, you will carry these concepts into other parts of your life. It’s the foundation of hope where you are toiling now, and this is the best way to pursue change.”

BRAINOIL: New Track Streaming Via Brooklyn Vegan

Today, prominent website Brooklyn Vegan is hosting a stream of "Gravity Is A Relic," the second track, and first public display of turmoil captured on BRAINOIL's upcoming second album, Death Of This Dry Season.

BRAINOIL's sludge rips with up-tempo crust-inspired breaks and monstrously baked breakdowns undoubtedly suited for diehards of Black Cobra, Iron Lung, Stormcrow, Iron Monkey, Whitehorse, Buzzov*en and El Dopa, as heard on the seven-track Death Of This Dry Season, set for vinyl LP and digital release via 20 Buck Spin on August 2nd.

CLICK HERE to endure the wrath of "Gravity Is A Relic" right now.

Continuing the label's longtime support of bands from their original home in the East Bay Area, 20 Buck Spin is proud to help re-introduce BRAINOIL to the current underground scene. Death Of This Dry Season marks a welcome and inexorable return to form by one of Oakland’s most noted acts. The anticipated follow-up to their self-titled LP released via Life Is Abuse back in 2003, Death Of This Dry Season takes the band's scathing, wretched brew of Bay Area-style doom/sludge to new heights over the seven face-crushing anthems it beholds.

Balance and Composure Announce Fall US Tour w/ Polar Bear Club

"The quintet knock it out of the park on their debut full-length, Separation. With accomplished producer Brian McTernan at the helm, the group's brand of well-rounded post-hardcore has never sounded more engrossing." - Alternative Press Magazine 4/5

"Separation is an exhausting practice, riddled in catharsis and grinding tension. Balance and Composure always conveyed a certain level of tribal melancholy with their past material, but they've rarely employed it with this much thought and deliberation, nor as much originality. Brilliant." - Punknews

"Separation has something for everyone and Balance and Composure fans both new and old can appreciate the variety of this album. I look forward to what the band puts out next." - Pop Wreckoning

"Balance and Composure have been creating deeply textured and cathartic songs for some time, but Separation shows they can maintain that power and progression over a 48-minute runtime. It’s a stunning debut." - PopStache

"...one of the most notable releases so far this year." - Alter The Press

"Doused in several shades of angst, Balance And Composure’s first full-length is proof alternative punk is shaping something new." - Blare Magazine

In their relatively short time together, Balance And Composure have built one of the most loyal followings in the indie scene based on their strong catalogue of releases and relentlessly heavy touring schedule.

After self releasing their debut EP "I Just Want To Be Pure" in 2008, Balance And Composure took the next step, signing to No Sleep Records for their "Only Boundaries" EP and split with Tiger Jaw. Early parts of 2011 saw the band hit the road with Make Do And Mend, and impressed crowds with standout live shows at this year's SXSW marathon. In addition to being selected for the Thrasher Skateboard Magazine party, Balance And Composure graced the stage as one of Alternative Press' "100 Bands You Need To Know" and performed at the epic No Sleep Records party alongside many of the labels' other up and coming acts.

Their latest effort, full length debut "Separation," has just been released in the States to critical acclaim through No Sleep, and was immediately followed by a full tour of the US with dredg and The Dear Hunter, and kicking off this week (following the band's recent US dates with Touche Amore and White Wives, and news of their first ever tour of Australia this August) will set out on a tour of Canada with label-mates La Dispute.

Now comes the news that the dynamic Pennsylvanian five piece will head out on yet another full tour of the US, this time joining celebrated Bridge Nine Records artists Polar Bear Club for a string of dates stretching from September 1st through October 15th and including special guests Fireworks, Make Do And Mend, and Such Gold on select dates.

Pixies Announce New "Doolittle" Tour Dates

HERE COMES YOUR BAND
THE PIXIES TAKE THEIR "DOOLITTLE WORLD TOUR" OFF THE BEATEN PATH

When iconic alt/rockers the Pixies say they're taking the "Doolittle Tour" on a world tour, they don't mean just the major capitals around the globe. So, the band - Black Francis, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering - is happy to announce that the celebration of the 20th anniversary of their beloved 1989 album will continue by taking the production - the biggest the band has ever mounted - to 19 secondary U.S. markets beginning Thursday, October 27 at the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, NJ.

"Two years and counting in this celebration of Doolittle's 20th anniversary," laughed drummer Lovering. "But people keep asking us to bring 'Doolittle' to their city, and we're really happy to do it."

A special Pixies fan pre-sale will begin on Friday, July 8, offering the best seats at every venue to those who are on the band's email list. Pre-sale purchases will include a specially-designed, limited edition Pixies t-shirt, as well as all ticketing fees, shipping and handling costs. The public on-sale kicks off Friday, July 15. Ticket prices, where to purchase tickets, and all other details can be accessed at www.pixiesmusic.com

For these tour dates, the Pixies have invited the West Palm Beach indie rock band Surfer Blood to open the shows from the tour's kick off in Montclair through to the North Charleston date on November 11. Imaginary Cities, who toured with the Pixies this past Spring, will join the band in Memphis on November 14 and stay through to the tour's conclusion. "We are all big fans of Surfer Blood," said Pixies Black Francis. "They're a young and energetic band and write great songs. And it will be terrific to have Imaginary Cities back on the road with us. They were a big success on our Canadian tour earlier this year."

On the "Doolittle Tour," the band will perform all of the songs from their 1989 classic Doolittle and its related B-sides. "Weird at My School," "Dancing the Manta Ray," and "Bailey's Walk" among them. Doolittle, rated the second-best album of all-time by the NME, was the band's third album and the first to chart on Billboard's album charts, and includes classics such as "Debaser," "Wave of Mutilation," "Here Comes Your Man," "Hey," and "Gouge Away."

"The thing about 'Doolittle,'" said Santiago, the band's guitarist, "is that it's still as fresh today as it was when we recorded it. I loved it then and I love it now."

An imaginative cinematic production has been created for The Doolittle Tour. Designed by long-time Pixies lighting designer Myles Mangino and designer Paul Normandale, the set features four huge, undulating, eyeball-like spheres flown just below the lighting rig and are part of the concert's light show. Filmmakers Judy Jacobs, Tom Winkler, Brent Felix and
Melinda Tupling were brought on board to create 12 films especially for the production. The films are projected onto a massive backdrop video screen to accompany 12 of the 21 songs that comprise the show.

As an example, visuals accompanying the song "Debaser" are from a compilation titled "Forbidden Images." The hauntingly beautiful black and white footage from the 1920s depicts the beginning of the women's rights movement, showing women's exuberant playfulness, femininity and sensuality. The footage, a little too progressive for its time period, was originally banned from theaters.

For "Here Comes Your Man," a four-way split screen displays close up images of the band members dancing along to the song; "I Bleed" sees blood dripping down the screen in time to the music; "Hey" features hand-drawn animation of the song's lyrics by Hollywood animator Tom Winkler; clouds, black holes, and Mankind's arrogance destroying the Earth are the focus for "Monkey Gone to Heaven," while "La La Love You" is a humorous animated piece starring hearts with legs.

The concert opens with the showing of the 1929 silent surrealist short film, "Un Chien Andalou," which was produced in France by Spanish director Luis Bunuel and artist Salvador Dali, and provided the impetus for Black Francis in writing "Debaser."

Since the "Doolittle Tour" kicked off in Dublin nearly two years ago, t he Pixies have perfected the extravaganza, playing to sold-out crowds in Ireland, Scotland, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, and to 20,000 fans over four nights in London. The band then first brought "Doolittle" to America in November 2009 where it played multiple-night sell-outs from Los Angeles to Chicago to New York, then again in the fall of 2010 where it criss-crossed the country, also to capacity crowds. Earlier this year, "Doolittle" played 18 Canadian dates, the most extensive tour the band had done there. The tour has received five-star reviews in the [London] Times, the Guardian and the Independent, and the U.S. press loved the show as well: "'Doolittle' still plants the freak flag in alt-rock's twilight zone, where lullabies meet blasphemy, waves of mutilation pound forests into driftwood, and all good monkeys go to heaven." "...an almost indescribable joy..." Canada's National Post called the show "dazzling," the Montreal Gazette said "It was absolutely wonderful," while the Ottawa Sun described the event as "a night of surrealistic musical fantasies."

"We've been together now longer than we were originally," added Lovering. "And to be honest, we're amazing that people still want to see us. We're very fortunate to be out there and doing shows, and that there is a demand for us."

We've been working on getting back there for a while now and this proved to be a great opportunity." Flynn adds, "This is going to crush, and having Sepultura together with us? Well, all I'll say is that these dates are going to be one hell of a monster unleashed on the crowds in Brazil, Argentina and Chile. No one will be left standing at the end of the night!"

hue: Starting Fires
"What were you thinking, starting fires? Were you just trying, to reach the stars?"

People start fires for a number of reasons. Sometimes for warmth, sometimes to be seen and very often, especially during this time of the year, to get a party started.

It is for all these reasons that Starting Fires, the second full-length from melodically-grandiose pop rockers hue, will soon garner lots of attention. Not only does their honest take on songwriting produce lyrics for all walks of life, but their crisp, joyous sound has the ability to turn heads and make a statement. Gather around everyone: Starting Fires is going to be the record that launches the career of hue and will get the Canadian music scene talking.

The five-piece act hail from Toronto via London, Ontario, though there is a striking quality to Starting Fires that represents the country they call home. Produced by Youtube phenomenon Mike Tompkins, there is also a diversity throughout Starting Fires. The opening rush of the piano-driven ‘You Will Be’ highlights the band’s atmospheric side, and ‘Colours You Would’ shows off the band’s ability to pen a comfortable, toe-tapping number. With the range of sounds available on Starting Fires, it’s no surprise that hue plans to perform extensively to promote the record.

Fires always have the ability to spread quickly, and likewise, there is no track on the record that doesn’t deserve to be shared amongst friends, family and eager music lovers. ‘Follow,’ a soon-to-be pop-rock classic hints at a maturity and confidence within the band’s voice that is sure to find its way to radio soon enough. ‘Rooftops,’ while still displaying a mature touch, is a groovy track that will be sure to get listeners through tough times while the rallying call of ‘The Bump,’ the album’s closer will leave listeners wanting more. Piano and keys are an important part of hue’s classic, radio-friendly vibe; it’s hard to believe that this record is only the band’s second. Surely, there is able warmth on Starting Fires, more than enough to spread around.

“Idealism and enthusiasm carry the day on song after uplifting song.” - London Free Press (top 10 album of 2007 for their sophomore release)

Having supported such Canada indie rock mainstays as We Are Wolves, The Wooden Sky, Two Hours Traffic, Said The Whale, Hollerado, Lights, and Mother Mother throughout their careers, it’s clear hue have been studying up on what makes not only a solid recording band but a formidable live act as well. Teaming up with Tompkins who also worked on Shad K’s Juno winning album allowed the band to expand their sound, both in content and instrumentation. Midway through the recording of hue’s album, Timbaland hired Tompkins to work on his latest project while he is the second most subscribed Canadian on Youtube with over 40 million views and second only to Justin Beiber.

There are many reasons to start a fire, and there are just as many to hear hue’s Starting Fires. Bold, uncompromising and eager to spread its wings, like many an eternal flame, hue will not be fading away anytime soon.

Following the release of Johanna and The Dusty Floor’s debut record Northern Lights on Red Valise, Johanna and the Dusty Floor are heading out on a U.S. tour with Brooklyn songwriter Bird Call. Hitting New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia D.C., Austin, and other cities across the country, the tour marks the first U.S. tour for the Brooklyn songwriter. In honor of her first tour, Johanna has made her track “Witch Shoes” available for free download. Download the track HERE and see the “Witch Shoes” video HERE (Feel Free to Post and Share) Premiered with Filter Magazine, the site called the track “a light and airy pop song filled with haunting vocals.” Johanna & The Dusty Floor also did a special rendition of her “Heavy Heart” for BreakThru Radio’s Here and There live sessions HERE.

Born in Australia and criss-crossing the globe before ultimately settling down in New York City, Johanna’s spent the last few years writing elegant pop songs that are perfectly paired with her sunny vocals. Studying jazz at the Australian Institute of Music, Johanna’s wide-ranging vocals and lush piano arrangements drift effortlessly atop scenes dealing with distress, demise, and passionate lust. And listening to Northern Lights, it’s easy to hear how Johanna has already earned comparisons Kate Bush and St. Vincent.
