ONE LITTLE INDIAN TO RELEASE ASTRID WILLIAMSON’S PULSE ON AUGUST 16

One Little Indian will release Astrid Williamson’s new album Pulse on August 18. In an 18-year career, the album is her 5th solo outing and marks a determined sonic sea change for the artist. Williams was inspired by the ambient sounds of guitarist Leo Abrahams performance as party of Brian Eno’s Pure Science project at the U.K.’s 2010 Brighton Festival. Williamson sent a dozen rough tracks to Abrahams, which struck a chord with the guitarist. He immediately responded to the songs “Reservation” and “Paperbacks.” The two began working together creating the resulting album. The duo also enlisted producers/remixers Raffertie and PhOtomachine for several tracks.

Williamson new album shows a conscious re-evaluation to her approach to creating music. “I wanted this time to make something different, an album where my voice was central in proceedings, in a lot of space—something more ambient. I also needed someone else to work with, to not be holding the reins for once. I wanted to be challenged again.”

Hailing from the remote Shetland Islands, Williamson has a built a career as a musician, vocalist and songwriter. Her tenure with respected indie trio Goya Dress resulted in the release of the acclaimed Rooms, produced by Velvet Underground’s John Cale. Her subsequent solo albums—1998’s Boy For You, 2003’s Astrid Williamson, 2006’s Day of the Lone Wolf and (2009) Here Come The Vikings—earned her critical praise with Music Week calling her “a refreshing revelation.” Additionally she has lent her vocals to several hit songs by Johnny Marr’s band Electronic and collaborated with 4AD founder Ivo Watts-Russell, lending her vocals to The Hope Blister.

Astrid is also currently putting together a new band, one that will work best with Pulse’s paired back songs. Away from recording and touring, she’s busied herself with her own label, Incarnatino, releasing two albums by the instrumental duo OSKAR as well as working with Electronic and Dead Can Dance’s Brendan Perry.

Swirlies Return To The Stage for Series of Rare LIve Shows as Band Celebrates 21st Year

INDIE ROCK STALWARTS SWIRLIES CELEBRATES MORE THAN TWO DECADES AS A BAND WITH HANDFUL
OF RARE PERFORMANCES THIS SUMMER

BAND TO PLAY FREE NYC BEACH SHOW AND MATINEE "LUNCH WITH SWIRLIES" GIG IN PHILADELPHIA
LOS ANGELES, CA, June 30, 2011 - Celebrating their 21st year as a band, noise-pop stalwarts Swirlies will play a smattering of rare live shows on the East Coast next month, marking their first public performances since 2009. The run of gigs will kick off at Talking Head in Baltimore on July 21 and include stops in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York. The Philadelphia show, taking place at Johnny Brenda's, is a special "Lunch with the Swirlies" performance that will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 23. The following day, with the iconic Brooklyn Bridge and East River as their backdrop, Swirlies will take the stage on the Beekman Beer Garden's sandy beach as part of the Beach Party Music Series. The show is presented in association with producers involved with the Seaport Music Festival. It begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 24. Admission is free and limited to 1,100 people age 21 and over. Psychedelic Horseshit will open the N.Y. and D.C. dates with their experimental electro noise-pop explosion. The line up for the tour will include founding members Damon Tutunjian and the aforementioned Andy Bernick, who will be joined by Deborah Warfield (Puella), as well as Adam Pierce (Mice Parade) and Rob Laakso (Amazing Baby, Diamond Nights) who have both been members of the band since the mid-nineties. Longtime collaborator Matt Sheppeck and other guests will round out the live ensemble.

Originally a Go-Go's cover band called Raspberry Bang, Swirlies emerged in Boston/Cambridge in the summer of 1990. The original line-up, which consisted of Tutunjian (guitar/vox), Bernick (bass), Seana Carmody (guitar/vox) and Ben Ducker (drums), quickly won over audiences with their dazzling mix of loud, wall-of-noise/shoegaze guitar rock and twisted, lo-fi introspective pop. The group's use of melded boy/girl vocals, sweet pop melodies, layers of effects-laden guitars, damaged electronics, and noisy samples, earned them recognition in both Boston's fertile "chimp rock" scene (Kudgel, Fat Day. etc.), and in the early '90s East coast shoegaze scene (Lilys, Velocity Girl) as it emerged in D.C. and Virginia.

While members have come and gone over the years -- upwards of 25 musicians have played in the band at one time or another -- Swirlies have remained active in some form or another for more than twenty years. And although the band's most recently released album is 2003's Cats of the Wild Volume 2 (Bubblecore Records), their earliest records have aged amazingly well and still sound fresh and ahead of their time today (their highly influential 1993 debut, Blonder Tongue Audio Baton, was called "one of the true masterpieces of 90s lo-fi indie rock" by Aquarium Drunkard). Throughout their career, Swirlies released four albums and two EPs on the Taang! label and a handful of singles have appeared on labels like Slumberland, Pop Narcotic, Simple Machines, Working Holiday and Nervous Records. In addition, the band has released a number of cassettes, CDs, and downloadable albums on its own Sneakyflute Empire label. Most of the group's catalog can be downloaded for free on Bernick's Richmond County Archive site here: http://rcarchives.com/swirlies/discography/index.htm

Clara May unveils typography-obsessed retro video for title track from debut album “Hush.”

Band’s Indian, Malaysian, Mexican, Chilean, European blood helps form new American sound.

“Hush” is the latest single and video from the debut album by Clara May

“Rich and alluring... a mini-melting pot of new American music.” – Chicago Sun-Times

“One could hardly hope for two more unique and distinct voices...” – My Old Kentucky Blog

“‘Hush’ is a melding of great lyricism and my obsession with typography,” says director Jason Robert Becker of the clip he created for the title song from Chicago duo Clara May’s debut album. “It was really the footage of the band performing that inspired it all. It felt like watching old film of The Velvet Underground.”

“We’re aping the style of 90’s designers like David Carson, who pioneered the use of type and fractured images in magazine ads,” explains Tom Silva, one half of Clara May. “It was Jason who brought the idea of putting the lyrics front and center.” Silva is no stranger to narrative, having already seen success as an auteur whose film “The Quiet” was named “Best Independent Film” by Chicago Screen Magazine. Silva’s songwriting partner in Clara May is Nicole Sotelo, a Harvard-trained theologian and author.

Together, with the help of some of Chicago’s most adept players, Silva and Sotelo have created the dark, romantic and socially conscious album, Hush. The album’s title track is a bitter breakup song that sounds like Beck’s “Lost Cause” filtered through Echo and The Bunnymen. “I started wanting to write a post-punk British new wave kind of track that sounded like The Thompson Twins and Queen's ‘A Kind of Magic.’” Silva says.

Much of the rest of Hush explores themes rarely addressed by mainstream music. Cultural identity is one and in addition to the subject matter, the musicians on Hush represent a melting pot of Chicago themselves. “We wanted to use our combined Indian, Malaysian, Mexican, Chilean, and European backgrounds to create a new kind of American sound,” says the Malaysian-born Silva.

“I would be honored if Clara May were considered the first true Desi rock band in America,” he continues. “I am very interested in celebrating my Indian heritage and talking about the issues that affect South Asians through the medium of rock music.” Hush, the debut album by Clara May is out now.

BALTIMORE'S DOPE BODY ANNOUNCE US TOUR DATES WITH LITURGY, HUME. "NUPPING" OUT NOW VIA HOSS RECORDS

Dope Body - "The Shape of Grunge to Come" via Altered Zones

"158) Dope Body/Nupping: Abrasive noise-punk band fearlessly dicking with funk and ska, for better or worse. #7" - 1000 Times Yes / Christopher R. Weingarten

Tour dates blow!

Since forming in 2009, Baltimore native sons Dope Body have evolved on a truly logarithmic scale. Moving from stark, primitve punk-metal to genre-swallowing, unabashedly-90's-referencing, poly-rhythmic brutes in less than two years, the band has created a bizarre new standard for the mutant art-punk-beaster set.

Nupping, their debut full-length, manages to recall the best of the heavier, more obtuse and rhythmically inventive elements of punk rock from the past thirty years, as well as the kind of formative-influence-stuff alot of current artsy, heavy bands don't wanna acknowledge: Rage, Wu-Tang, nu-metal, Michael Jackson, The Beach Boys, and contemporary pop radio.

Baltimore scene-documentarian Michael Byrne says it best; "Maybe it’s Zach Utz’s way of making guitar strings sound like pure electricity, in the sense of being actual materialization of electrical current strung on a guitar body and conjuring these bat-shit sounds of mixed feedback, chug, and tearing open space-time. Or human rubber band Andrew Laumann’s immense talent for stripping any and all civilization from his voice...and just how weirdly and furiously drummer David Jacober moves the songs forward. Amazing how three dudes so much in their own worlds manage to make a whole other one and call it a song... Anyhow, you get the point: heavy music from deep, anarchic currents."

"What’s very important to note is that Dope Body is one of a half-dozen bands in the whole worldwide punk revival that really gets it, that it’s not about being retro or being the next some-other-band-that-already- existed. Which is probably why it slides just so perfectly into warehouse/Wham City Baltimore."

PRESS FOR NUPPING

"Straight-up virtuosity has been somewhat out of style for a while now in punk-rock, garage, and lo-fi, in favor of artful or at least fashionable slop. This is not that and, hopefully, the music world takes notice." - Baltimore City Paper / Michael Byrne

"Dope Body have taken their sound and fury and refined it into something truly memorable, signifying Nupping, a record that will blow minds, ears and speakers." - Beat Bots / Tim Kabara

"Known for its intense, mucked-up punk rock, Dope Body cranks out some brutal jams on Nupping. It sounds like a call to arms, a reminder that ferocity works in every era, and that there are many, many ways to make screeching and scrawl sound as vital and imaginative as they did when The Monks accidentally stumbled upon feedback in the '60s." - Washington City Paper / Leor Galil
