Bio:

Philadelphia, PA's Literature features Kevin Attics, Nathaniel Cardaci, Chris Schackerman, and Seth Whaland. Attics, who'd written for numerous music trades as a teen, met Cardaci and Whaland at the house venue they both operated in Austin, TX. Cardaci and Whaland each ran small imprint labels and, a million adventures later, the trio decided to form a band. Upon moving to Philadelphia the group befriended Schackerman who also joined the fold.

In 2012, following a well-received single and a track on Gerard Cosloy's "Casual Victim Pile II" compilation they released their debut album, Arab Spring, which became a cult hit within the indiepop community. That album is sharp and immediate, almost mod-ish in its attack, but always tuneful and going for melody where it counts. They toured the US in support, and have performed with the likes of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Eternal Summers, Ted Leo, Sic Alps, White Fence, Gentlemen Jesse, Hospitality, and Brown Recluse. They also appeared on Terre T's Cherry Blossom Clinic.

In 2013 they released a follow-up 7", "Tie Dye" and contributed a track to Esopus Magazine alongside artists like Jens Lekman and The Shins. They also played at that year's NYC Popfest, which helped cement the buzz that was steadily growing amongst savvy pop fans. Arab Spring was treated to a re-mastered re-press, which followed the first pressing and quickly sold out.

Autumn of 2013 saw the band begin work on their second album, Chorus, with lauded engineer Gary Olson (whose body of work includes records by Crystal Stilts, Mad Scene and The Beets) at his Marlborough Farms studio in Brooklyn, NY. As a beautiful autumn turned into one of the harshest winters in recent memory, Olson and the band began stretching out, enhancing the album with studio techniques dating back to the late 60s including true-tape flanging, sending vocals through Leslie speaker cabinets, and the same analog style of automatic double-tracking created at Abbey Road Studios.

The result is an album that is as immediate as it is timeless, full of effortlessly catchy and well-crafted tunes that echo pop legends like Smiths and Orange Juice. All of that time in the studio has resulted in a rich, considered sound that puts the band's arranging and playing front and center. Chorus is one of the most exciting pop records in years, and marks Literature at true contenders.

Israel Nash's "Rain Plans" featured on NPR's "Heavy Rotation"

“Rain Plans,” the title track off Israel Nash’s new album, is being featured on NPR’s “Heavy Rotation—10 Songs Public Radio Can't Stop Playing” (http://n.pr/1AXBpgI) and continues to receive spins on Austin’s KUTX, Seattle’s KEXP and Minneapolis’ The Current.

Rain Plans, which recently streamed in its entirety at The A.V. Club (http://avc.lu/1unsvsb), was released to widespread critical praise both stateside and abroad:

 “A glorious neo-psychedelic masterpiece.”—KEXP

“There is a vivid sense of imagery permeating through Rain Plans. Simple, textured instrumentation compliments songs about traveling through life to find whatever it is you’re looking for.”—Glide Magazine

“It’s a career worth following.”—The Independent

“Nash paints a sonic picture using bright strokes of grunge,
‘60s folk-pop and crying pedal steel.”—CMT

 “…compelling.”—Paste

“The most phenomenal Americana record of the year.”—Rolling Stone Germany

“…music soaked in rural American lore.”—Uncut

“…likely going to make several year-end lists when all is said and done—both here and abroad.”—Stereo Subversion

The album was produced by Nash, recorded and mixed by Grammy Award-winning engineer Ted Young (Sonic Youth, Kurt Vile) and inspired by Nash’s new home of Dripping Springs, TX which helped evolve the tone of his songwriting. Of the new music Nash notes, “I wanted to make an album that sounded like what I saw and somehow spread the peace that this place brings to me. These songs are all about moving from New York to the reaches of the Hill Country and what those hills represent to me, which is greater than just nature. It’s about my life and home. I really wanted to go new places and abandon any rules that had made me cautious before. It’s about creating an environment that is so much bigger than any individual.”

To celebrate the release, Nash will set out on a worldwide tour including an Americana Music Festival Official Showcase performance at The High Watt in Nashville. See below for full tour routing.

As a native of Missouri, Nash grew up in the heartland of America. Ever restless, Nash relocated to New York City. In 2011 he released Barn Doors and Concrete Floors, which was recorded live in an old barn in upstate New York. Extensive touring in Europe helped Nash gain greater exposure overseas and the Euro Americana Charts chose Barn Doors and Concrete Floors as the top album of 2011.

Megafortress announces debut full-length on Driftless Recordings

"The singer must have known love in his own experience and recognized it as good absolutely. He must also have known the presence of Satan, in the world and in his own heart." - Sirius, Olaf Stapledon

Believer, the debut full-length from Megafortress, is not a meditation on faith or devotion. It is a search, constantly twisting into darkness, where the identities of every object and intentions of every figure are unclear. The tracks seem to follow a sole searcher, a lost person, for whom faith is not a source of light amidst the obscurity but a delusion that only makes the ambiguities more terrifying.

Megafortress is the solo work of Brooklyn artist Bill Gillim. In 2012, Software released his debut s/t EP, a collection of gorgeous vocal meditations and ambient soundscapes. Believer boasts a bolder, naked vocal approach, telling a hauntingly intimate story. The ten songs give shape to a world that on the surface seems sweet and welcoming, but, in time, slowly unravels into a place of disorder, sickness, and disappearance. That ambiguity is written into the album at all levels.

Aurally, the record is at once lush and spare. Layered synthesizers and saxophone, occasional bass, sampled bells and natural sounds, tweaked voices, and Gillim's warm, unaffected vocals create a honeyed sonic backdrop. However each track adheres to a kind of patient minimalism of its own logic. The songs persistently resist climax, instead corkscrewing or turning into the unexpected: minor and discordant notes, interrupted thoughts, always toward an eerie stillness.

That balance of melody and discord, hope and haunting, is reiterated in the overall arc of the record, which takes us over a route of happier melody into darker, more anxious, more echoing and spacious zones, until we are left, lying on our backs, hearing ourselves breathe. All the while, the story we are being told in words is revealed to be one of self-deception, devious and obscure figures, and wishful thinking.
