BULBUL: Baffling Austrian Rock Crusaders Offload Frantic Nine-Minute Jam At American Aftermath

Vienna's unfathomably pliable, ceaselessly entertaining, pigeonhole-avoiding riff and rhythm crusading trio, BULBUL, has created their finest and freakiest works yet, closing a six-year gap since their last album with their incoming Hirn Fein Hacken.

With longtime BULBUL cohort Ollmann Brunbauer in charge of the tracking, Hirn Fein Hacken was created in an aged farmhouse in the Austrian backwoods, the album's name literally translating to "get your brain chopped into pieces." Boiling over with creativity and energetic power from beginning to end, the record is an unclassifiable fifty-minute voyage to a place where genres are not ignored; rather they've never been realized. Aside from their customary rock backline, BULBUL utilized household instruments including tennis rackets, bicycle wheels, cooking lids and mattocks to pound out these ten stories, after which the tracks were digitally revised and reconstructed. It's just something that must be experienced, as crafting hype fodder on Hirn Fein Hacken's "sound" is just a foolhearted venture.

Yet the adventurous ones out there will try to capture this album's maddening genius into descriptors, one of which is American Aftermath, who today unveils Hirn Fein Hacken's fifth ripper, "Kanzla." While it tops out at a colossal nine minutes in length, the track remains upbeat and engaging withBULBUL's by-the-throat ingenuity, American Aftermath stating of the track, "As an instrumental, it takes you through a whirling and winding medley of masterful, expansive music. Bass-heavy and mesmerizing, I am beyond stoked to present you with 'Kanzla.'"

Get freaky with the "Kanzla" jam RIGHT HERE.

Also endure the previously released album opener, "Fire" HERE and also witness these awesome madmen in action with the new video for "Genderman Can" RIGHT HERE.

Now celebrating fifteen years and seventy label releases, Exile On Mainstream will release Hirn Fein Hacken in North America on June 8th, the CD housed in a beautiful Holusion cover with partial spot gloss, and the massive 2xLP pressed on 180-gram pure black virgin vinyl. Earsplit Distro is the sole stateside outlet to monger the vinyl and has preorders for the 2xLP live HERE and the CD HERE.

Noisey premieres trippy new video for Vensaire's song "If"

Click here to watch the video on YouTube

"Vensaire's video for "If" finds the Brooklyn five-piece soundtracking a man's hallucinogenic journey across time and space, through melting buses and star-studded valleys. It's confusingly contemplative, like a tab of acid in your afternoon tea." -- Ezra Marcus, Noisey

Vensaire is the band for a world where bands don't matter.  In a culture lived on the internet and spoken in tongues of allusion and reference, the idea that a "band" in any traditional sense could be important is frightfully outdated.  But this is the very void Vensaire was conceived in.  Their music, a mystical concoction that spills over you in a wave of joy and longing, not only makes you dance, but ushers you along the path of reflection and growth.  In this vein, Vensaire is the synthesis of five unique and disparate personalities three years in the making.  Their debut will finally see the light of day with the concept album Perdix: a sweeping story of discovery and adventure based on Homer's Odyssey that crosses four continents before penetrating to the very heart of creation itself.

Vensaire formed in late 2011 between friends Alex LaLiberte (vocals/guitar) and Widowspeak's Robert Earl Thomas (guitars/vocals), whom first met while attending NYU.  LaLiberte's childhood friend Hunter Hawes, Oberlin-trained drummer/percussionist Alex Jacobs, and Landlady co-founder Renata Zeiguer joined the two by the spring of 2012, when Vensaire was asked to play SXSW, without a recording to their name.  The band returned to New York to continue recording their self-titled EP, which was released that September.  On the strength of those five songs, Vensaire was able to entice Grammy winner Scott Colburn (Arcade Fire, Animal Collective, Prince Rama) into staying with some of the members in their Brooklyn apartment to record their first full-length album.  Waiting patiently in the wing since 2012, and now ready for an April 15 release, Perdix is a finely crafted debut fusing Western pop and indie-rock with a wide range of international folk influences (the band has a large exotic instrument collection, including sitar, tablas, erhu, guzheng, and lots of percussion instruments from Zeiguer's father's home in Argentina and her mother's home in the Phillipines).

Perdix in some ways calls to mind the producer's discography.  Vensaire aptly employs samples and electronic drums to augment the vocal and instrumental melodies at the heart of each song.  What sets the band apart, however, is the complexity and variety of it's compositions. "See I'm You" builds from the reversed sample of a friend's voice into an anthemic pop gem. "PorteƱo" rides the exuberance of Spanish-style guitars and "Song 6" revels in gorgeous Asian-inspired strings.  "Rose Cottage" is perhaps the most indicative of what Vensaire is capable of: a three-movement creation that rises above the simple looping structure of most sample-based songs, slowing to a delicate acoustic middle section before climaxing in resounding group vocals.  Perdix ends as it began, allowing the record to be looped ad infinitum- yet another example of Vensaire's clarity of vision and execution.

Barrows premiere title track from upcoming album via MetalSucks.net

Los Angeles instrumental rock quartet Barrows premiere the title track from their sophomore albumRed Giant today via MetalSucks. The pummeling tune is available to stream/share HERE. (Direct Soundcloud link HERE.)

The band previously shared a live multi-track audio, multi-camera performance video via Exclaim! The clip for this version of the album track "Beyond" is available to watch/share HERE. (AlternateYouTube link.)

Barrows play a hometown album release show on May 18th at The Satellite in Los Angeles. A tour of the West Coast in June will be announced soon.

Red Giant is fittingly massive in thematic scope as it is in sonic heft. A concept album about the life of a star and what happens after it dies, the band depicts the stages of celestial death throughout the album's five epic tracks. Akin to similarly expansive musical works like Pink Floyd's Meddle,Tangerine Dream's StratosfearKing Crimson's Red and a light dose of sci-fi soundtracks,Barrows build upon entrancing, circling riffs and rhythms intercut with explosive peaks and brilliant subtlty.

To capture this sweeping endeavor, the band teamed up with revered engineer Toshi Kasai (Melvins, Tool), hunkering down for several months at Kasai's newly built North Hollywood studio. The resulting 5-track, 40-minute album was mastered by Chris Common (Palms, Pelican) and will be available on LP and download on May 6th.

Opening track "Nebula" sets up the album's cinematic feel, starting with a hushed, distant layer of white noise as we slowly draw closer to the song's gurgling notes. Softly plucked guitar lines materialize, rising and fading in the mix as drummer Richy Epolito's driving beat veers into a wash of guitarist Jim Leonard's tremolo-soaked strings cascading from the speakers. The album's title track takes the proceedings up several notches to depict the final stages of the star, with a forcefully pulsating tom drum beat, chiming and wailing guitar notes circling around heavily distorted, rumbling bass notes. The drop followed by a huge delay swell at the end of the song is the sound of the star exploding and becoming a supernova. Transitioning into "Black Hole," the energy remains strong as the instruments astonishingly create a dizzying feeling that we're being pulled into an endless abyss. "Wormhole" follows from there, turning more upbeat and psychedelic, reminiscent of The Mars Volta's early prog-explorations with Epolito's masterful, endlessly rolling and rollicking beat and the ever-shifting wah-pedal warped guitar lines pushing and pulling in many directions. Finally, "Beyond" is the sound of us exiting the wormhole into a strange and unknown dimension. Beginning with clean tones and an interwoven bass and drum pattern, the tune progressively becomes darker and heavier while remaining rhythmic and mysterious.

Throughout Red Giant the tracks segue smoothly from one to another, creating an album that's best experienced as a whole, but equally filled with powerful standalone moments.

The Horrors launch 'Illuminate Luminous" a social media driven album stream

New album Luminous - available May 6 on XL Recordings
This Is Fake DIY  *****
'Luminous' is the album they've been destined to make.

Q Magazine ****
'Luminous' is a vast, starry-eyed sonic stew in which guitars sound like jet engines, synthesizers sound like departing spaceships and at least one person appears to be playing a banjo. It's genuinely exciting to think where The Horrors might go from here.'

Stereogum
band who gleefully defies categorization...he epic "I See You" opens as an unusually clearheaded and dance-y track for the Horrors, with a lilting Britpoppy melody, but all that gives way to spectral, deeply tripped-out second half worthy of Spiritualized or early Deerhunter.

-------

With the release of their fourth album Luminous just a few days away, The Horrors have launched Illuminate Luminous, an album stream driven by the power of social media. Beginning as a completely black page with album opener "Chasing The Shadows" playing on loop, listeners will be prompted to 'Share To Illuminate Luminous'. As fans share the page on Facebook and Twitter, it will gradually brighten and songs will slowly be revealed. Eventually the page will fully transform and the whole album will be available to stream.

Earlier this week the band played a show in Brooklyn at House of Vans and tonight they'll play a sold-out show at the First Unitarian Church in Los Angeles after a morning performance atKCRW's 'Morning Becomes Eclectic'.  This weekend the band will head to Austin Psych Festival for a performance on Saturday night.

Last week, Radio 1 listeners were treated to the band's Maida Vale Session where the band's performance included an electrifying rendition of the seminal Frankie Knuckles classic "Your Love" as their wildcard cover.

The Horrors are also hosting a series of exclusive radio shows for Spotify. You can listen to The Leather Lounge hosted by frontman Faris Badwan now:http://www.thehorrors.co.uk/radioluminous

Luminous is available to pre-order now on iTunes, with 'I See You' and 'So Now You Know' both available as instant grat tracks: http://smarturl.it/Luminous_i

The Horrors are Faris Badwan (vocals), Joshua Third (guitarist), Tom Furse (keyboards, synthesisers), Rhys Webb (bass) and Joe Spurgeon (drums, percussion).

Mattress Financial (Two Inch Astronaut) + Fond Han Ready Split EP for Exploding In Sound Records

"Private Split" EP due out on May 20th from Exploding In Sound Records

Mattress Financial and Fond Han are getting ready to release their debut split cassette,Private Split on May 20th via Exploding In Sound Records. The names may not be familiar to many but those behind them have been creating music in the East Coast underground for many years now. Mattress Financial is the solo project of Sam Rosenberg, primarily known as guitarist/vocalist for Colesville, MD post-punk band Two Inch Astronaut. Fond Han is the solo moniker of Thomas Baumann, former guitarist/drummer/vocalist for New Brunswick, NJ math punks Neur and avant spazz punk trio Hot Fang.

Recorded in a variety of non traditional locations (farm houses, bedrooms, office buildings, abandoned homes), Private Split finds both songwriters taking time to explore lo-fi sounds and textures in a different light than their other bands, taking a step back from the dense technicality of their bands. Mattress Financial and Fond Han both create a stunning trip into sparse, moody, and primarily acoustic guitar based singer/songwriter territory, though this is far from any stereotypical dad rock or more-twee-than thou indie pop one may associate with the genre. Mattress Financial and Fond Han have created two distinct takes of folk based indie rock, loaded with introspective lyrics, a wry sense of humor, and the warmth of simplistic recordings that are as honest as they are raw.

Mattress Financial is the product of constant songwriting from a prolific musician. While focusing on Two Inch Astronaut, Sam Rosenberg began to write “songs that didn't quite fit the bill for that band. I amassed a small collection of these creepy little songs and thought it'd be fun to try and play most of the instruments on them. I'm attracted to things that are portable and practical, like a really good backpack, so I tried to write simple things that could stand on their own without much in the way of bells and whistles, or a capable bassist and drummer.” The result is stunning and after some prodding from Exploding In Sound Records, Rosenberg agreed to release the songs, together with close friend and like-minded musician, Thomas Baumann.

Fond Han was never a conscious decision to be a solo project (and won’t remain solo for long), but following Baumann’s move from the dirty basement scene of New Brunswick to a co-operative farm outside of Princeton, New Jersey, a change had occurred and the music recorded for Private Split offered a fresh start and a new beginning. When asked about the decision to go solo, Baumann stated there was “no time to work with others and explain everything, I just wanted it to be marked quickly, while it still felt real. My friend Matt Weiss also moved from New Brunswick to the farm house and wanted to record something in the new space. He had a bunch of gear, I had a batch of songs.” The simple origins of Fond Han show a side of Baumann unknown to most, while retaining a great sense of off kilter humor and humility in his songs.

Fond Han and Mattress Financial will be hitting in the road together for an East Coast tour in support of the release this June.

Mattress Financial was recorded by Michael Siegel (“I Do That Good,” “On Your Lap”) and Devin McKnight (“40s”) and mixed by Christian Ankerstjerne. “I Do That Good” features Brendan Bessel (drums) and Michael Siegel (bass). “On Your Lap” features Michael Siegel (bass). Fond Han was recorded and by Matt Weiss and Thomas Baumann. Private Split was mastered by Michael Siegel.

Private Split artwork by Thomas Baumann. Layout by Matt Connery.

Private Split is due out May 20th, 2014 via Exploding In Sound Records on cassette and digital. Pre-orders are available HERE.

RIVERS OF NIHIL Debuts "Birth Of The Omnisavior" Video; Tour With Whitechapel And Devildriver Begins Next Month

Reading, Pennsylvania natives, RIVERS OF NIHIL, continue their ascent of the death metal ladder with a brand new music video. "Birth Of The Omnisavior" is a sleek and dark video that captures visually what this band does so well sonically: play emboldened, deftly-executed death metal at a level far beyond their years. Watch "Birth Of The Omnisavior" from latest album, The Conscious Seed Of Light, now at THIS LOCATION

Formed in 2009, the modern progressive death metal quintet's music is as dark and heavy as the coal and iron their home city was built upon, taking influences from some of the scene's heaviest, most abrasive brutality peddlers a la Morbid Angel, Gojira, Spawn Of Possession, and Decapitated.RIVERS OF NIHIL's debut, The Conscious Seed Of Light, was recorded in March of 2013 at Mana Recording Studios in Florida with famed metal producer/musician Erik Rutan. While The Conscious Seed Of Light is not necessarily a concept album traditionally speaking, RIVERS OF NIHIL began their project with the idea that they would release four separate albums tied together with one common theme: each reflecting a particular season of a year. Bassist Adam Biggs elaborates: "The Conscious Seed Of Light is intended to be representative of Spring and explores various themes concerning new beginnings, growth, and an attachment to the natural world in a post-human Earth. Unlike some concept records however, we wanted to allow each song to work on its own terms. Rather than have the songs rely on each other to move a specific story structure forward; they work within their own separate narratives, but ultimately serve the album's broader concept." RIVERS OF NIHIL's lineup is rounded out by guitarists Brody Uttley and Jon Kunz, vocalist Jake Dieffenbach, and drummer Alan Balamut.

GRAVES AT SEA: New Hymn From Forthcoming Split With Sourvein Now Polluting The Airwaves At Pitchfork

Head over to Pitchfork.com for an earful of grisly doom from legendary Portland misery bringers,GRAVES AT SEA.

Titled "Betting On Black," the latest canticle serves as the opening number of the band's upcoming split with Cape Fear riff-wielders, Sourvein.

Relays Pitchfork of the tune, "'Betting On Black' leads off the split and shows that [GRAVES AT SEA] haven't changed a bit... They still stretch out Grief-like sludge, and Nathan Misterek's vocals still have that raspy black metal tinge to them. It's got that earthy misery that you want from sludge, pain born from bad breakups and worse whiskey hangovers. GRAVES AT SEA also sound revitalized with the addition of bassist Jeff McGaritty and drummer Bryan Sours. Boogie to these blackened rhythms."

Get down with your dejected self at THIS LOCATION.

Uniting in sound, mind and feedback-addled spirit, the GRAVES AT SEA/SOURVEIN split will be unleashed via Seventh Rule Recordings later this month. GRAVES AT SEA, whose contributions leave an eerie aura complete with tortured vocals, foreboding composition, and a general sense of dread, occupy Side A. Recorded by Billy Anderson, (Melvins, Sleep, Neurosis) "Betting On Black" and "Confession" finds the all-consuming sludge for which the band is notorious, flooding in amongst the tortured howls and shrieks of vocalist Nathan Misterek. SOURVEIN, who've now existed for two decades of distortion, damage and unrepentent doom, solidify Side B. With three songs produced and recorded by Mike Dean of Corrosion of Conformity, these odes of heavy combine toxic riffs, grooves and just the right amount of psychedelic appeal.

Both sides were mastered by Brad Boatright (Sleep, Beastmilk, Nails) at Audiosiege Engineering and will be released on both CD and LP on May 13th, 2014, prior to their appearances at this year's edition of the Maryland Deathfest. The first pressing of the LP will be limited to 1000 copies and come available on 160-gram black wax with an included download code. Recommended for fans of Eyehategod, Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard, and all things loud and fuzzy.

Preorders are currently available at THIS LOCATION.

"Any fan of stoner or doom metal should break out the paraphernalia for this one, because it covers all the bases." - Cvlt Nation

"These bands are to one another both kin and complement, as the sounds thumb a parallel helix yet manage to separate themselves from one another just enough. But that's hardly the success here. Each song on either side serves as its own showcase of a band intent on keeping too many false smiles from polluting our planet. This split simply crushes from either side of the wax. It's a tad bright outside for my squints to adjust, so I'm gonna sit here in my basement, blast this staggering marriage of dissonance and harmony, and wait for the fuzz to pound my front door." -- HeavyPlanet

Thine, Bloody-Disgusting.com premiere new track "Out of Your Mind and into a Void" from upcoming album "The Dead City Blueprint"

YORKSHIRE, UK - Thine, the enigmatic UK dark rock/prog quintet, has teamed up with Bloody-Disgusting.com to launch a new track, "Out of Your Mind and into a Void," from the band's upcoming The Dead City Blueprint album, due out May 13 on Peaceville. The Dead City Blueprint, the long overdue follow-up to the acclaimed 2002 album,In Therapy, was recorded at the hallowed and legendary Academy Studios (Paradise Lost, Anathema, My Dying Bride). The 10-track offering sees the band build upon the sublime hooks and dark existential themes from its previous two album releases.
Commented the band:

"We've been toiling away for over a decade on shaping our latest monster. It has been such a long and grueling process with countless collapses and relapses and a traumatic voyage on numerous levels, but this opus is finally in the flesh so to speak. It is an encapsulation of all those glorious tragedies we all find ourselves overcoming along the way, and essentially for us, a welcome catalyst. Sometimes the best art comes only through being unexpectedly forced through the city's darkest avenues, so hope you'll find us there."
Another new song from The Dead City Blueprint, "To the Precipice," can be streamed on Soundcloud at: https://soundcloud.com/peaceville/thine-the-precipice.

The debut album of boundary-warping metal noir, A Town Like This, appeared on Peaceville the following year. Thine's most accomplished work to date, In Therapy, saw light of day a full four years later and showcased a more sleek and immediate sound, bringing comparisons to other dark and emotional acts such as Katatonia and Anathema. ABOUT NEWCOMERS ANTI-MORTEM:
What the American hard rock and metal scene needs right now is an infusion of youth and some new blood coursing through its veins. Enter ANTI-MORTEM and their upcoming debut album, New Southern. Formed in 2008 and with over 300 shows already to their name, the combined average age of this Oklahoma quintet is just 21-years-old. ANTI-MORTEM were raised on southern rock & heavy metal and driven by a hunger to make an impact. The band dole out bottom-heavy and groove-laden anthems with every track and infuse a modern sense of melody that is the signature trademark of all the metal greats they've learned from.  Also present and accounted for: southern swagger in spades, courtesy of the band's roots and upbringing.
