Brain Holiday is the debut album proper from Dead Gaze, following on from the acclaimed self-titled compilation released by FatCat imprint Palmist in March. Brain Holiday is a confident and ambitious album, which places Cole Furlow's songwriting ability front and center; the move from recording in his bedroom to the famous Sweet Tea studio in Oxford, Mississippi allowing a talented composer of pop songs to emerge from the fuzz that characterized his earlier recordings.

The time at Sweet Tea, which has played host to bands such as Animal Collective, Modest Mouse, The Walkmen, and Elvis Costello, came about by chance when a friend of Cole's who worked at the studio was offered 11 days of free studio time and immediately thought of Dead Gaze. As Furlow explains, the studio is a "huge million dollar studio with an amazing old Neve console," and he was excited at the opportunity recording at such a place presented to him; "I wanted everything to kinda be perfect. In my head I was thinking there is no way in the world I will touch another studio like this ever again, so fuck it - let's make an enormous pop record."

Brain Holiday fulfills this criterion from the start, opening with the trademark thick Dead Gaze guitar sound and plowing into the hook-filled anti-anthem "Yuppies Are Flowers." Elsewhere, "Rowdy Jungle" is probably the biggest and boldest pop song Furlow has ever written, mixing the swagger of Suede with the chiming lead guitar of Joey Santiago while he implores, "please believe me when I say there is absolutely nothing that can get in our way." Dead Gaze still sits comfortably alongside contemporaries such as Cloud Nothings, White Fence, and Dent May, but Brain Holiday is a more varied listen than the self-titled compilation previously released, at times recalling The Flaming Lips, ELO and, with "Stay, Don't Say," a New Age Harry Nillson.

A more positive album lyrically, the title of the record alludes to Furlow's wish for it to act as a vacation from people's troubles. "I just want people to listen to the jams when they need something to get their brain off whatever it is that's making them go to the music in the first place." The quality of the material will ensure that they keep returning to an album Furlow says he intended to make, "for everyone."

The Republic of Wolves Announce New Album "No Matter How Narrow" Out December 17th

The Republic of Wolves
Announce New Album "No Matter How Narrow" Out December 17th

"...devastatingly dynamic, captivating and moody compositions with tasteful applications of all those risky elements apparent in this style of music." - Punknews

"No Matter How Narrow" is the second full-length album from The Republic Of Wolves, written and recorded after a nearly two-year hiatus following their 2011 EP "The Cartographer." As with their earlier releases, the album was recorded, produced, and mixed by the band themselves, although the process was more chaotic; the band's home studio setup migrated between three different locations throughout the roughly four months of recording, as all four members worked around various time constraints to make it happen. Dan Gluszak (ex-Envy On The Coast) was enlisted to play drums on the record, performing on all tracks except for "Keep Clean," which features Will Noon (Straylight Run, fun.) on percussion.

"No Matter How Narrow" is a more immediate, concise, and light-hearted album than its heavy and somber predecessor, 2010's critically acclaimed "Varuna." The new album explores a more accessible sound while continuing to embrace the wide range of moods and dynamics that characterizes the band's catalog.

* "No Matter How Narrow" will be available digitally through iTunes and Amazon, and will also be available in physical formats, including limited vinyl and CD pressings through Simple Stereo Records, all available December 17th.

Turin Brakes Releases New Album "We Were Here" Today, Listen + Share Title Track

Turin Brakes Releases New Album We Were Here via Cooking Vinyl/Red River Entertainment Today

Listen + Share Title Track “We Were Here”

From the majestic opening swoop and swirl of “Time and Money” through to the elegiac campfire slide of closer “Goodbye”, the new album We Were Here finds the members of Turin Brakes - Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian along with long time collaborators Rob Allum and Eddie Myer - at their most assertive and consistent, with a hypnotic collection of songs that nods to classic releases of the ’70s and also to the triggers of existential dread that sit right at the heart of the information age.

Recorded over two weeks of eighteen hour days in legendary Welsh studio Rockfield, We Were Here (to be released October 8th via Cooking Vinyl/Red River Entertainment) gorgeously chimes and echoes with the pastoral psychedelia of Pink Floyd, the sunset soul of Laurel Canyon, the blues of the Mississippi Delta and the band’s own six-stringed past. Listen and share the tender title track HERE.

Formed in Balham, South West London, in 1999 by childhood friends Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian, Turin Brakes signed to French label Source in 2000 and released their Mercury Music Prize nominated debut album The Optimist (2001). Their second album Ether Song (2003) entered the UK album charts at number 4 and spawned the Top 5 single Pain Killer (Summer Rain). The Top 10 album JackinABox was released in 2005 and followed byDark On Fire (2007). The band signed to Cooking Vinyl in 2009 and released Outbursts (2010).

What the U.K. press has been saying:

"We present to you SKATERS - the best band to emerge from Manhattan since...great writing and an incessantly creative arrangement. Gloriously inventive grooves, wonderfully nonchalant vocal and constantly engaging composition. SKATERS have got that vintage lo-fi pop sound down to a tee so what are you waiting for?" - ThisFeeling.Com (UK)

"Like the Beach Boys, who famously didn't surf (Dennis Wilson excepted), SKATERS don't skate... [songs] reeking of subways and steam hissing from backstreet vents with a clattering urgency . It's the end of the world as we know it ... and SKATERS feel fine." - The Guardian (UK daily)

"New York band SKATERS want to be your new party soundtrack. Wait, scratch that - this band doesn't want to deliver the late-night anthems only to you. They want to serve 'em up to your friends, your little brother, and pretty much everyone you know." Brooklyn-based alt-rock/indie-pop quartet Folding Legs (whose members hail from New York City, Vienna and Stockholm) have developed a distinctive melodic sound that incorporates diverse influences from Talking Heads, Radiohead, Bootsy Collins and Laurie Anderson to Swedish folklore, performance art and surrealist Czech filmmaker Jan Å vankmajer. Their debut 5-track EP ‘Drown In Light’ , out today via KID Recordings, brings into sharp focus their thunderous sonic panorama supplanted by skilled musicianship, rich melodies, expressive vocals and vivid, self-reflecting storytelling. The band have just released a transfixing video for “Double Time” filled with nostalgic and apocalyptic images projected onto a haunting singing totem of a child’s head. Watch the video on YouTube and Vimeo.

The frenetic stomp of “This Glass House” begins the journey of Drown in Light with the shattering of a relationship and the strength and clarity that come after. “Double Time” starts with a sparse piano melody that is overtaken by front woman Katharina Stenbeck’s seductive vocal as she addresses a lover she keeps urging to “break the silence”. Her intimacy and directness is underpinned by a fearless sound that alternates between volcanic and pastoral with ease. The mesmerizing “Spring on 93rd St” is a nostalgic lament for an unfaithful partner with a delicate melancholic arrangement. This is the sound of a band unafraid to be defiantly honest with a disarming sound that can be as bold and angular as it is fragile and crystalline.

Drown in Light is part of Rdio’s New Music Weekly program this week. Listen to the EP on Rdiohere.

Folding Legs is:
Katharina Stenbeck – Lead Vocals, Scenic Design
Gregory Henits – Bass, Vocals
Christopher Cerny – Guitar

SKELETONWITCH: "Unfit" For Disney, But Fit For A Wedding; Hometown Record Release Show Announced

Fresh off a short run of dates supporting Ghost B.C., Athens, Ohio-based blackened metal quintet,SKELETONWITCH, has announced a hometown release party for their forthcoming new full-length,Serpents Unleashed. The show will take place at The Union (18 W. Union St., Athens) on October 23rd, the eve of the kickoff to their extensive North American fall tour with The Black Dahlia Murder. Tickets for the event are just $10.

The Black Dahlia tour will be swiftly followed by another lap around America in early 2014 alongside Amon Amarth and Enslaved. Unfortunately for fans in Orlando however, where the tour stops on January 27th, SKELETONWITCH will not be allowed to perform at the local House of Blues, as the group has joined the likes of Exodus, Machine Head and others deemed "unfit to be associated with" Disney, on whose property the venue is located.

Although SKELETONWITCH might be unwelcomed at the Magic Kingdom, a California couple has asked the band to make their dreams come true. During SKELETONWITCH's performance in Fresno on November 15th, longtime fans Travis Bartlett and Lanae Forrest will get married on stage -- making local venue Strummer's their own happiest place on Earth. Says groom-to-be Bartlett, "Lanae and I are taken aback and beyond elated that SKELETONWITCH are willing to be a part of the most important day of our lives. There really aren't words to show our appreciation for the band being with us as we begin our lives together."

Commemorating the group's 10-year anniversary, Serpents Unleashed -- recorded earlier this year with Kurt Ballou (Converge, Isis, High on Fire), and featuring artwork by John Baizley (Baroness, Kylesa, Kvelertak) - will be unleashed in North America on October 29th, in Australia, Germany, Austria and Switzerland on October 25th and in the UK and the rest of Europe on October 28th. Serpents Unleashed is available for preorder at SKELETONWITCH.com in CD, LP, cassette, digital download and limited edition 7-inch collector's box formats. In addition, you can now pre-order the album digitally at iTunes and BandCamp and receive an instant download of "I Am Of Death (Hell Has Arrived)."
See for yourself whether SKELETONWITCH are "unfit to be associated with" at one of their dates below.

CMJ SHOWCASE IN NEW YORK
PRODUCED BY BEN ALLEN
 (ANIMAL COLLEC

“Both immediately captivating and unique, largely due to the impressive vocals by singer/songwriter Drake Margolnick.”—Filter Magazine
Beats Per Minute is premiering the new music video for Flagship’s “Break the Sky” at http://bit.ly/1bFfRMZ. The song, which was recently hailed by American Songwriter as “a moody anthem reminiscent of the best of The National and old school U2,” is from the band’s self-titled debut, out today on Bright Antenna Records. To celebrate the release the band will be performing at New York’s CMJ Music Marathon on October 1718 and19MTV Buzzworthy described Flagship as “a powerhouse of gloomy guitars and anthemic melodies” andConsequence of Sound raved that the band “sifts through the pastoral folk rock graces of bands like Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear, with occasional detours into wide-eyed pop catharsis.” The new album was recorded with critically acclaimed producer Ben Allen, best known for his work with Animal Collective, Washed Out and Youth Lagoon. Please see below for complete tour dates.
In 2011 solo singer, songwriter and guitarist Drake Margolnick joined local musicians Matthew Padgett (guitar, backing vocals), Michael Finster (drums, programming) and Grant Harding (keys) forming Flagship. In 2012, Christopher Comfort joined on bass. The band has become a staple of their hometown club scene and was voted Best Local Band for Charlotte Magazine’s 2013 Bob Awards. They toured the U.S. with The Wombats performing in front of sold out crowds in New York, Washington, D.C., Boston, Chicago and Salt Lake City. This year Flagship played SXSW for the second time along with a performance at the inaugural Bottle Rock Festival in Napa Valley.
With Margolnick as the main songwriter, the band worked on the tracks in unison at an Atlanta studio. He notes, “normally we just start playing together, no talking, just playing. No planning. It just falls together and we organize it. Once we have the song, I’ll start mumbling and making noises and I’ll find my melody during that process and then go and write the lyrics.” The band experimented with the recording process on tracks like “Waste Them All,” which Harding explained was recorded in one live take. Of working with Allen, Finster points out, “Whenever we recorded with Ben I remember we’d do batches of songs, like three at a time. He’d set everyone up in different ways depending on the song and record those people together—drums, bass, guitar—whatever was going to happen.” Allen said of the sessions “It’s really satisfying as a producer to hear the song sound complete and epic right when it’s being recorded live, as opposed to having to edit, tweak and mix until it feels that way.”
Flagship’s self-titled full-length album comes on the heels of 2012’s Blackbush EP, which Baeble Music praised for “the deep-throated baritone delivery of lead singer Drake Margolnick a la Ian Curtis from Joy Division.”
