WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM: New Album Nears Completion

After devoting late Winter season to writing and recording, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM are in the final stages of completing their fourth full-length opus of epic, earthen Black Metal ceremony.

For over six months the Weaver brothers, Aaron and Nathan, have been immersed in the painstaking writing and recording process of their newest album, and this week the process is nearly complete, at press time the album in its final mixing stages. The WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM clan have confirmed the title of this forthcoming astral black metal document as Celestial Lineage.

The transmutation reaches a new level with the completion of the album. In contrast to the bleakly hypnotic architecture of Black Cascade, the lifespan of Celestial Lineage breathes more expansive and visionary life into the duo's work. The WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM trademark long-form approach to arrangement remains intact, but there is a stronger thread of Popul Vuh-inspired underworld synthscapes and star-lit pulse woven with the intertwining guitar figures. Celestial Lineage will end a trilogy of releases which began with Two Hunters (2007), and is segued by Black Cascade (2009), and like both previous albums, will be released via Southern Lord Recordings, with a street date of September 13, 2011 now confirmed. Three songs on the album feature Jessika Kenney’s liturgical choir and solo voice, as heard on Two Hunters as well as 2009's Malevolent Grain EP, the album also including orations from Aaron Turner (Isis).

Stated WITTR drummer Aaron Weaver of the writing process for Celestial Lineage: "An ornate constellation of imagery is what that guides the songwriting process. Cedar temples crowned with burnished bronze domes glimpsed in a remote valley. Wild Midsummer bonfires and feasting on roasted flesh. All of the sounds serve to evoke the images that exist in our minds eye. With this record we're going to explore an entirely new palette of sound. We want the instruments to sound like the liturgical music of a cedar cult."

Besides closing out a trilogy within WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM's own annals, Celestial Lineage also marks the final release to ever be recorded in engineering wizard Randall Dunn's infamous Aleph Studio, the birthplace of a plethora of groundbreaking releases from Earth, Sunn O))), Boris, Cave Singers, Bjork/Omar Souleyman and countless more over the past decade, as well as where the immense tones and energy on WITTR's lauded Two Hunters and Black Cascade albums were captured. Check out several brand new in-studio photos from these special recording sessions here.

In support of the album, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM will commence worldwide touring this September, kicking off in the Americas, and eventually engulfing many other regions of the planet through 2012. Stay tuned for final album details and tour dates to be unearthed in the weeks ahead.

LOS ANGELES, July 7, 2011 - New musical collaboration AM & Shawn Lee are announcing tour dates supporting Thievery Corporation. Their debut single, "Dark Into Light" will be released on July 19 on ESL with their LP Celestial Electric to follow on Sept. 6.

AM & Shawn Lee's fortuitous cyberspace partnership began generating advance buzz several months ago when they previewed their new songs live at the SXSW Music and Media Conference in March 2011. The following month, they celebrated Record Store Day by releasing a limited-edition gold-vinyl 12-inch single on Ubiquity Records.

The collaboration of the AM & Shawn Lee musical project started after AM heard Lee's music on the radio in Los Angeles. After reaching out to Lee, the two became quick friends, sharing a similar love for vintage grooves and '60s and '70s soundtrack music. The pair decided to record together after AM played guitar on a few of Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra shows (including KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic") in the summer of 2010. Lee, armed with a four-track and other vintage tape machines in his London studio, started sending AM drum and percussion beats in December. In Los Angeles, AM wrote and recorded songs over the grooves, adding guitars, Casio synths, vocals and occasional bass. Lee added more instrumentation such as bass, keys, guitars, glockenspiel and other assorted instruments and they emailed back and forth until each was happy with the mix.

They each documented their process through photos, emails and videos and they will be posting a series of "Building The Track" videos that document the behind the scenes recording process in London and Los Angeles, as they get closer to the release date for their debut album Celestial Electric on September 6. The first behind the scenes video is for their debut single "Dark Into Light" see: http://youtu.be/k5C58Ch523U

RIVERBOAT GAMBLERS "Smash & Grab" on US Tour Supporting New EP

PAPER + PLASTICK RELEASE
RIVERBOAT GAMBLERS
SMASH/GRAB EP
Available July 12th on Paper + Plastick
Riverboat Gamblers Announce Summer Tour with Off With Their Heads

Paper + Plastick Records is excited to announce the release of Austin’s raucous rockers RIVERBOAT GAMBLERS new EP, Smash/Grab, on July 12th. Available on vinyl, CD, and digitally, the band will be toting the new EP on their summer US tour with Off With Their Heads, which kicked off yesterday in San Diego at Casbah. The first leg of the tour wraps on July 30th in Cleveland, with the second leg of the tour picking up again for a week in Houston on August 26th closing out in Las Vegas on September 2nd. See all tour dates below.

Armed with their first new release since 2008’s Underneath The Owl, Riverboat Gamblers’ notoriously rowdy live show will include a handful of new songs. “’Parasite Friends’ is a song we have actually been playing for a year… but I feel great about doing the new songs live,” says vocalist Mike Wiebe. “AND THE KIDS LOVE THEM!” Praised for the band’s ability to turn concert halls upside down, Wiebe has received comparisons to the iconic Iggy Pop by SPIN, which commented Wiebe performs with “a kind of calculated recklessness -- his bandmates must have training in the Zen art of avoiding a swinging microphone,” and Rolling Stone stating Riverboat Gamblers “baptized pogoers… in sweat and yell-along choruses as Wiebe, a beanpole Iggy Pop, literally bounced off walls, crawled atop the audience as far as his mike cord allowed and hung by his ankles from the rafter as he sang.”

After touring for nearly two years straight, Riverboat Gamblers bunkered down in Dallas earlier this year to record Smash/Grab with Stuart Sikes (Rocket From The Crypt, White Stripes, Cat Power). Smash/Grab is filled with Riverboat Gamblers’ patented energetic rock and Southern swagger, but is rawer and rougher than the band’s previous efforts, which Wiebe says was a conscious effort. Anchored by the song “The Ol’ Smash and Grab,” Wiebe surmises “the song specifically is about some of our western attitudes… but the idea of a smash and grab can apply to a number of things (be it looting or emotional manipulation). The title for the record is meant to reconsider the idea of what is 'needed' and how we go about getting whatever it is we think we need.”

Pink Skull returns with Psychic Welfare, their third studio album and second for RVNG Intl., following 2009's Endless Bummer.

Psychic Welfare comes after Julian Grefe waded through the cosmic slop that accumulated around him the two years following the release of Endless. Grefe alongside Justin "JG" Geller, forms the central nervous system of a Pink Skull. The duo expanded to include Jeremy Gewertz (drums), Mike Hammel (bass), and Sam Murphy (guitar) for the recording and live realization of Endless, and then expanded once more to include Adam Sparkles (programming) and Robin van der Kaa (bass, programming) for Psychic Welfare.

Psychic Welfare was produced by Pink Skull and Jeff Zeigler (Kurt Vile, War On Drugs) between the band's Philadelphia studio and Brooklyn, NY. Contending with the seismic swells in both the macro and micro worlds around him, Grefe refracted the polluted waves in a fantastical fit to write the 13 songs of Psychic Welfare. The album is a map of time and space portals in which the listener can navigate from the corroded corners of machinated life to boundless, amorphous space in mere seconds.

Across the album's pull-out poster artwork for Psychic Welfare is a hand-scrawled poem by the late NYC sage Ira Cohen entitled "Blind Assemblage". In the poem, Cohen describes the decay of society and struggles to find civility within tragedy, a sentiment mirrored in Grefe's lyrical content of Psychic Welfare, if not masked by a new found pop propensity.

The lead track on the album, "Hot Bubblegum," a Television-inspired piece of pop perfectly pushes this dichotomy of psychotic playfulness. "Mu" is a sprawling instrumental spread of blissed-out 80s funk, complete with a tin rooftop sax solo by Billy Dufala (Man Man). "Janine Aubergine" fictionalizes Grefe's girlfriend's bluegrass fiddle-playing aunt as a psychedelic maven over a tango groover, while "Bee Nose (Put Yr Face On)" is a woozy, hazy late-night phone call from the warped Scottish countryside circa 1998. "Summer Reading" feels like a Transformer-era Lou Reed bullying Mark E. Smith around a disco bouncey castle.

Tracks from Psychic Welfare were remixed by Brassica, Higamos Hagamos, Ray Mang, and Worst Friends. Each of these remixes will be released as single support and included alongside additional original tracks as bonus downloads. The artwork of Psychic Welfare is taken from a a series of visual synth feedback experiments conducted by the band and video artist Adam Carrigan.

Pink Skull will be playing at this year's Camp Bisco Music Festival in upstate New York this weekend joining acts including Cut Copy, Yeasayer and Four Tet.

The physical version of Psychic Welfare will be available on September 13th from fine retailers worldwide. The LP edition features a 48" x 96" heavy-stock pull out poster. The digital version will be available September 27th from the drab internet universe.

"If you like your music with a heavy dose of grit, look no further than Oxford, Mississippi-based trio Young Buffalo. These guys are a little bit rough around the edges, but thanks to their impressive layered harmonies and recklessly carefree vibe, they're every bit as catchy as their more polished pop counterparts. Still in their early twenties, this ambitious young threesome sounds like a Southern-tinged mashup between Local Natives, The Vaccines, and Vampire Weekend- which, if you ask us, is an excellent combination." Nylon

"It's not often that on the first listen of such a young band that the phrase "a force of nature" zooms to the tip of your tongue, but that's what happens when we listen to this" - Daytrotter

“The exuberant unison vocals, the trebly percussiveness without too much low-end bass whomp, the whoa-oh-ohs—they’re all here. Welcome to the late-noughties revival...” - The Guardian

"feverishly anthemic" - The Line of Best Fit

"Meet Young Buffalo and have an early look at a band that will wind up on countless best of lists at the end of this year." - Hear Ya

“I always got the hand-me-downs,” says Young Buffalo's Jim Barrett, “all of my brother’s old clothes, shoes, and of course, music.” That brother: John —responsible for the frenzied frontman role in Bass Drum of Death—and Jim always gravitated towards the instant gratification of immaculately written pop music as well as grittier bands like Sonic Youth and Nirvana.

While hints of those influences can be found on Young Buffalo's Young Von Prettylips EP, the band runs with them to create their own brand of "joyous noise-pop" (the Guardian.) From the testy time changes and swift call-and-response choruses of “Full Metal Whacket” to the head-circling harmonies and diabolical dynamics of “Only We Can Keep You From Harm” their debut EP is full of ready-made singles. And there’s “Catapilah,” previously released as a 7-inch (via UK imprint Young & Lost Club) that slips some psych into the mix and pays tribute to the Mississippi trio’s early days of driving out to the countryside home of bassist Alex Von Hardberger. (Young Buffalo’s rhythm section is rounded out by guitarist/drummer Ben Yarbrough though the guys often swap instruments live.) “If someone brings their best ideas to the table, we’ll try to find all the different parts to it but if we can’t, we can always switch around and someone else can have a go. By having that ability to swap instruments, we really free ourselves to find the best possible way to write songs. If definitely takes our band to a different creative level because we all feel like we have to bring out best ideas to the table, otherwise there’s a chance it won’t measure up. There’s a healthy competiveness in Young Buffalo which I don’t think is very common.”

When they bring the three strands of creativity together and put them together into a multi-dimensional whole, it makes Young Buffalo an unusual and truly thrilling band to behold. The EP was penned by all three members, collectively creating a sound that straddles the line between pop's melodic heart and rock's chaotic edge.

“’I’m drawn to the experimental side of things because there are no rules,” explains Jim. “You can make something really poppy, but with some rough edges that aren't easy to pick apart and listen to. I really want to straddle that line a little better with whatever we do next.”

MACABRE's first album in eight long years, Grim Scary Tales was released earlier this year on the band's Decomposed Records, with North American distro by Willowtip and European distribution by Hammerheart. The album delivers the madness and musicianship MACABRE fans have come to love over the past quarter of a century, cleverly combining nursery rhyme sing-along quirkiness with ultra-tight, high-speed, gore/grind/death ingenuity. MACABRE have cleverly devised a “story book of murder” with this album, as Grim Scary Tales tracing back to the earliest recorded and most infamous mass killers.

"While Macabre's sound is certainly unique, never has it been more versatile than on the new album..." - Rue Morgue

"...this odd, transgressive, audacious record will be like manna from the drill-hole in the head of a Dahmer acid zombie for those who can abide a healthy dose of absurdity in their brutality. 8/10" - Decibel

"Every bit the raucous, gore-grind slab of still-quivering meat fans have come to expect from the band..." - MetalSucks

"Blending elements of death metal, thrash, nursery rhymes, country rock, circus music, chamber music, a weird old town crier and even some world music themes, Macabre takes the listener on a twisted sonic journey on every track." - Metal Army America

"...the technical synchronicity that the band is capable of is nothing less than awe inspiring, and new fans just discovering Macabre with this disc might not fully appreciate their capability. 4/5" - Metal Rules

Tomorrows Tulips' Alex Knost started The Japanese Motors with his friend Nolan when he was 17, signed to Vice Records, and toured the world with bands like Modest Mouse, The Growlers, White Lies, and others. Eventually, Knost wrote some songs and started a band with his girlfriend Christina Keyes , which ultimately became Tomorrows Tulips. They recently announced the arrival of their debut full length album Eternally Teenage out July 19th, 2011 via Galaxia Records on cd, vinyl, and digital download. Knost & Keyes will be playing a string of Southern California-based dates coming up in support of the new album, hitting Costa Mesa, Fullerton, Venice, Long Beach, and Los Angeles proper coming up. The band plans a more extensive tour this September. Check out the dates below!

---

More info on Tomorrows Tulips:
Right after forming and playing a handful of live shows, the duo went into Mike Mchugh's analog studio The Distillery in Costa Mesa, CA, and recorded a hand full of demos. They were simple. Sparse. Immediate. Fucked up. But... catchy, with a simple honesty. Between the quirky instrumental interludes, the hypnotic drug born soundscapes, and the Knost's wide range vocal stunt work, Tomorrows Tulips have created an album that, quite simply, will get stuck in your head for weeks. Beyond that though, at it's core, Eternally Teenage is an addictive offering of crisply, blissful doo wop with shades of garage, drones, and crooning that complete the picture. Tomorrows Tulips will be doing a string of live dates later this summer.

Aeroplane Pageant Announce New Album

AEROPLANE PAGEANT COLLABORATES W/ 2-TIME GRAMMY WINNER "BASSY" BOB BROCKMAN
3rd Full-length Album FLOAT ABOVE THE YARD set for September 20th self-release:

New York's Hyperrealistic Pop Band Releases "Help Me Shoot This Apple Off My Head"
With Accompanying Video
New York, NY - July 8, 2011 - Produced/mixed by 2-Time Grammy Winner "Bassy" Bob Brockman (Notorious B.I.G, Bob Dylan, Herbie Hancock, Debbie Gibson) FLOAT ABOVE THE YARD expands upon Aeroplane Pageant's distinct aesthetic vision of blurring the line between what's real and what's fake, while combining poetic-minded content with the latest experimental pop production techniques. "We live in an age of misinformation and misrepresentation, where things are presented in a way that's often more than real. With this record we really wanted to capture that absurd yet playful whimsy of these illusory and hyperrealistic times," emphasizes singer/songwriter Brian Kelly.

Aeroplane Pageant now celebrates the 2011 US release of its newest single, "Help Me Shoot This Apple off My Head," by making it available for free to download on the band's website. Go to: www.aeroplanepageant.com and watch the premiere of the video today at Artist Direct.

The band will also play NYC''s MERCURY LOUNGE on August 12th previewing new material and fan favorites.

Previously 2009 single "Stars Still Pretty" was AOL Spinner's Top Ten Download of 2009, Magnet Music's Video of Day 2009, which also premiered on Much Music and MTVU. The band was recognized as Newsday's Top Ten Artist of 2009, and was also featured on NBC New York and CNN.

Whether joining the stage with artists ranging from Vampire Weekend, Psychedelic Furs, Tokyo Police Club, The Antlers, to Hold Steady, Dr. Dog, and White Rabbits, or collaborating with such artists as American writer Rick Moody (author of Ice Storm), or producer Shane Stoneback (Jim Jarmusch, Sleigh Bells, Cults, Fucked Up), both of whom are currently remixing songs from upcoming LP, Aeroplane Pageant has become an integral addition to the New York art pop scene---making art for art's sake, and borrowing from all artistic mediums---by pooling together sounds both big and small, organic and electronic, insular and celebratory, bright and dark, abstract and material, noisy and melodic, and repetitious and formless---thus creating a sound and vision that's entirely their own, which only fully materializes with their unhinged cerebral live show.

Furthermore, three additional singles, videos, and remixes will be released for this album, "Brief Confessions of a Young Bear," "Cities as a Dream" and "Big Little Wolfs."

With US tour dates scheduled through the summer check the website for all things Aeroplane Pageant (AP).
