Hometapes, the Colorado-based independent label that’s home to Paul Duncan, Slaraffenland, the Caribbean, and Pattern is Movement, is excited to announce the release of Red Bloom of the Boom, the debut full-length from Bear In Heaven. The album arrives on October 23rd, 2007. Once the brainchild of Atlanta-native Jon Philpot (who works with Savath and Savalas and is an editor for Wonder Showzen!), Bear in Heaven is now a full-fledged band, and the band is finally ready to take its staggering shapeshifting psych-rock epics out on the road.
In 1998, Bear in Heaven (then just Philpot) released its debut EP Tunes Nextdoor to Songs on Eastern Developments. Now comprised of Philpot (Presocratics, Savath and Savalas, and Wonder Showzen), Adam Wills (Rhys Chatham's Essentialist and Guitar Trio, Jonanthan Kane's February, and Paul Duncan), Joe Stickney (also of Rhys Chatham's Essentialist, Paul Duncan, as well as part time duty with Panthers), and Sadek Bazarra (designer with the venerable Graphic Havoc Visual Agency), Bear In Heaven has taken on the magic of many hands, not to mention a (super)group of longtime friends.
Red Bloom of the Boom marks the in-between moment of Jon Philpot's solo explosion becoming a full band's orchestra of sound. "We started clean and natural and as time passed we twisted, distorted and tweaked. After all that we're as handsome as ever," says Philpot, in a simple-yet-accurate explanation of the monster of a band that Bear In Heaven, unassumingly walking the streets of Brooklyn, has so suddenly, but deliberately, become.
The music: Philpot's voice is daydream-and-goosebump-inducing. It glides over walls of melodious distortion, building songs that are unapologetically epic. It is pleasure protracted, climaxes flashing well into songs that are complete sonic sentences. It testifies to psychedelic roots, to the music that we obsessed over in the 90s, and to absolute "future rock." Bear In Heaven is indeed deserving of a new descriptor.
The album is a timeline, according to Philpot, as well as an exercise in collaboration: "The group's core formed after a version of 'Shining and Free' was recorded. Our pal Gerry Fuchs (Turing Machine, !!!, Maserati) played drums on that song. Once Joe [Stickney, drummer] was onboard we went ahead with the others...We did 'Werewolf' and 'Slow Gold' at Sean Maffuci's studio. We we're able use his MU-tron, old pre-amps, tape echo and zero gravity chamber...There are guest singers...Alley [Alejandra Deheza of School of Seven Bells], Paul Duncan, Eva [Eva Puyelo Muns of Savath & Savalas]: amazing folks." Intra-band admiration continues with guitarist Adam Wills commenting that once-solo Philpot "brought a lot to the table as far as being able to let his own material go, to adapt it/edit it/change it/delete it/re-write over the course of a year in order to make it perfect." The album also features contributions from Athens/NYC cellist Heather McIntosh (The Instruments, Circulatory System).
Almost as difficult to wrangle onto a stage as they are to describe, Bear In Heaven has made a few appearances in and around NY, playing with everyone from neighborhood peers Paul Duncan and Coyote to indie household name The National. They'll be revealing themselves once again this Fall in honor of the release of Red Bloom of the Boom and in anticipation for what's next. From what we hear, the next album is almost finished.

Dropkick Murphys "The Meanest Of Times" Out 9/18 - Fall Tour Announced
DROPKICK MURPHYS are set to release their sixth studio album THE MEANEST OF TIMES--a collection of spirited, cathartic and heartfelt anthems--September 18 on their own Born & Bred Records in association with Warner Music Group's Independent Label Group. The Boston band will also hit the road September 12 for an East Coast headlining trek in support of THE MEANEST OF TIMES with The Horrorpops and Everybody Out.
From their early beginnings playing all-ages matinees at now-defunct Boston clubs to the prominent placement of their song "I'm Shipping Up To Boston" in Martin Scorsese's Academy Award-winning film The Departed, the DROPKICK MURPHYS--KEN CASEY (vocals, bass guitar), AL BARR (vocals), MATT KELLY (drums, backing vocals), JAMES LYNCH (guitar, backing vocals), TIM BRENNAN (mandolin, accordion, banjo, bouzouki, tin whistle, and acoustic guitar), MARC ORRELL (guitar, accordion, piano, backing vocals) and SCRUFFY WALLACE (bagpipes)--have evolved over the past decade into one of the most beloved punk-inspired bands in the world. The band performed at the Sex Pistols' infamous 2002 Golden Jubilee gig, wrote the theme song to the highly improbable 2004 Red Sox World Series Championship (their first championship in 86 years) and collaborated with Woody Guthrie's estate to utilize the folk pioneer's unpublished lyrics to craft "Gonna Be A Blackout." At the heart of THE MEANEST OF TIMES lies "The State of Massachusetts," a song that plays to the strengths of DKM. The song, with its instantly memorable driving banjo riff is sure to be an immediate hit with diehard MURPHYS fans as well as the legion of new fans that have come on board in the wake of The Departed. "I think we all like the fact that it crosses the spectrum between Irish folk music and rock & roll. It's really indicative of what the band is all about," BARR says.
Produced by the band, THE MEANEST OF TIMES contains all the best elements of the DKM sound: a complex distillation of classic punk rock, Celtic folk and American rock 'n roll. This album puts the band's diversity, intensity and sincerity on full display. The album's stirring opus "Flannigan's Ball" features guest appearances by Spider Stacey of The Pogues and Ronnie Drew of The Dubliners, bringing together three generations of modern Irish folk music. "You know, Irish music is a family thing," CASEY notes. "I can imagine a father, son and grandfather all sitting down to listen to that song, each with their own generations represented."
As evidenced by the explosive and uncompromising album-opener, "Famous For Nothing" and the set bowing, optimistic roar of "Never Forget," The MEANEST OF TIMES is book-ended in top form and captures among its 15 tracks what founding bassist CASEY calls "themes of childhood, growing up and family." "Growing up, I saw my share of hard times. I think a lot of us did. But looking back on it, I wouldn't trade them for anything, because those hard times made us all who we are today," he explains. "To me the record is a celebration of life," BARR adds. "It's about redemption. It's about coming up in the world and the way it shapes you. It's about not taking your family and friends for granted and it's about living in the moment. The cover is a bunch of Catholic School kids messing around and looking angry on the playground. And if you think back to your elementary and high school years, in a lot of ways, they sometimes really were the meanest of times."
With their label debut, DKM have turned out what is arguably their best album to date, a notion upheld by the scorching two-minute working class anthem "Tomorrow's Industry," the whiskey, war, suicide and guns chant-along of "Vices & Virtues" and the disc's socio-political hardcore bruiser "Shattered." "In this day and age, I think it's natural for bands to write songs based on topical, political and social issues," CASEY explains. "But as we started to take a look at all the songs, we had eleven that dealt with family, and by that I mean our direct families, people in the neighborhood, fans and friends. For whatever reason the songs just gravitated in that direction. Each song tells a story about people in our lives or parts of our backgrounds."

Yard Dogs Road Show On Tour This Fall
The Yard Dogs Road Show is a hobo cabaret, a living patchwork of vaudeville and rock and roll. Last spring they sauntered through the Northwest with their Cabaret Blitz! Tour. Most recently, the troupe left Oregon Country Fair audiences breathless. Now, Yard Dogs Road Show heads east coast for a string of dates, and stops in Denver for a very special Halloween show with Devotchka.
Yard Dogs Road Show are pure visual and sonic voodoo. It’s a true story on stage: sword swallowers, dancing dolls, fire eaters and sunset hobo poetry - all animated by the live sounds of the Yard Dogs cartoon heavy band. Born from the saloon vaudeville that toured the Wild West in the late 1800's and slammed into the underworld of modern American road culture. The Yard Dogs create a timeless space for the union of ancient theatrical alchemy and modern pop culture.

With the publication of his book, Hobo: A Young Man’s Thoughts on Trains and Tramping in America (Random House / 2003), straw boss and founding member Eddy Joe Cotton and the Yard Dogs Road Show surfaced into the mainstream media, including recent recognition in SPIN Magazine. As the San Francisco Weekly reviewed, “Many wandering youngsters identify with the label “tramp artist,” but few have taken it to the top-hat perfection quite like Eddy Joe Cotton…[Eddy] and the Yard Dogs Road Show do their neo-vaudeville thing the only way it should be: with flash, panache and an underlying sense of menace.”
Bringing rock & roll to theatre and theatre to rock & roll, Yard Dogs Road Show has collaborated with Teatro Zinzanni, Cirque Du Soleil, and Burning Man and have performed such renowned festivals as Bonnaroo, Vegoose, Oregon Country Fair and Wakarusa.
There is some speculation as to the origin of the Yard Dogs Road Show. Not for the want of mystery but for the difficulty in translating an experience that was navigated by the overly-romantic and sleep deprived. Shows came and went leaving very little time to fully comprehend what was going on. Some say the carnival-inspired performance art of the Yard Dogs Road Show began as a three piece jug band performing in road houses and dance halls and at informal gatherings, including Oregon’s modern day acid tests with Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters. Some say they traveled in a 1967 Ford Galaxy 500 and the evolution of their show revealed itself in the flames of a campfire on Dog Creek Road: dancing dolls with feather fans, an hombre in silver sunglasses eating fire, a dreamy guitar boy with golden locks, a bearded swami capable of conjuring the supernatural . Others say this story is complete hogwash and it was actually the brainchild of a unemployed “cowboy” and his faithful muse – transient artists with an incredible talent for brainstorming impossible ideas while under the influence of poppy tea and wishful thinking. By chance these conversations were overheard by an ambitious young poet who decided to actualize them for the sake of all impossible dreams everywhere.
Either way, that was seven years ago, and the unlikely troupe of gypsies has been performing on stages ever since.

Jimmy Eat World has announced a North American US tour to coincide with the Oct. 16 release of its new album, Chase This Light. The Mesa AZ quartet has covered a good chunk of the globe over the past few months, debuting songs from the forthcoming album and airing both standards and seldom-heard fan favorites alike. The band's recent U.S. dates generated some of the best live reviews of the band's career ("a captivating performance that spanned and sometimes re-imagined its catalog" -- Arizona Republic) and were followed by a debut tour of South Africa, and finally a string of European festival appearances that culminated at Reading/Leeds in the UK this past weekend.
"Big Casino", the first single from Chase This Light, is now available at all online music retail, and the album can be pre-ordered at iTunes.
Chase This Light is the band's first full length studio album since the gold-certified Futures, which landed on ROLLING STONE, BLENDER and SPIN's Best of 2004 lists. Executive producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Sonic Youth) recently described the album as "Quite eclectic. There are three or four songs that sound like classic Jimmy Eat World, with angular, razor-sharp guitars. There are a couple that are a lot more dreamy, and some that are very groove-acious."

Fresh off the world famous Vans Warped Tour, San Francisco’s KARATE HIGH SCHOOL announces they will join the nationwide ‘Eyes On The Prize’ Tour with Eyes Set To Kill. Pure Volume lends its support by making KARATE HIGH SCHOOL its featured artists starting Aug. 31, compelled by the band’s #10 ranking the site’s Top 100 Chart.
It isn’t any ordinary band that can seamlessly blend unstoppable melodies and crushing guitars with inspiration from sub-par science fiction and comic book lore without sounding trite, but KARATE HIGH SCHOOL is that band. Lead by Paul McGuire, singer/writer/producer/one-man studio force, KARATE HIGH SCHOOL – with Ray Bautista (keyboards), Dan Kingdon (bass), Aaron McVeigh (drums) and Geoff Garnett (guitar)—readies their sophomore release The League Of Tomorrow, streeting Sept. 4 via Evolution Music Group. The disc serves as a follow-up to the group’s 2006 full-length indie-label debut, Arcade Rock, which most notably featured the underground fan favorites “Good News And Bad News” and “Sweep The Leg.”
“Inspiration comes from everything, really,” McGuire says. “Bad sci-fi movies from the ‘50s, worse horror movies from the ‘80s, comic books, Bolivian literature by Kystenov, 8- and 16-bit video games, Einstein's theory of spatial relationships between equidistant relativities, standup comedy, Benjamin Franklin, Richard Simmons, and the crushing realization that I don't have any other skills.” The album represents a significant accomplishment for the vocalist/keyboardist/guitarist, who wrote, recorded, produced and performed the entire album within the confines of his bedroom.
Upon returning home from extensive touring, KARATE HIGH SCHOOL underwent some line-up changes, and McGuire, with his bandmates in a state of flux, opted to write, record and perform the band's next album, The League of Tomorrow, in its entirety without spending a single penny in a recording studio.
“In all honesty, I couldn't be more excited about the final result and I'm not ashamed to say that I want all of you to hear the record,” says McGuire. “Come see us on tour this spring and summer -- we'll be trying out songs from the new album to see how they sound live, and we'd love to see all of your faces. And sleep on your couch. And use your shower. And have you cook dinner for us. You get the picture.”

Sigur Rós have confirmed a November 6 street date for two separate but related releases: a DVD called Heima and a double CD set titled Hvarf / Heim. Both will be issued in the U.S. on the XL label.
Heima-which translates as both "At Home" and "Homeland"-- chronicles a series of free concerts Sigur Rós played in their native Iceland over the course of summer 2006. Combining both the biggest and smallest shows of their career, the entire tour was filmed, and now provides a unique insight into one of the world's most fascinating and inscrutable bands captured live while exploring their natural habitat like never before. The film is currently being edited by Nick Fenton with direction from the Oscar-nominated Dean DeBlois.
The culmination of more than a year spent promoting their hugely successful Takk... album around the world, the Icelandic tour was free to all-comers and went largely unannounced. Playing in deserted fish factories, outsider art follies, far-flung community halls, sylvan fields, darkened caves and the huge horseshoe-shaped Asbyrgi canyon (formed, legend has it, by the hoofprint of Odin's six-legged horse Sleipnir), the band reached an entirely new spectrum of the Icelandic population; young and old, ardent and merely quizzical, entirely by word-of-mouth.
Material from all four of the band's albums is featured, including many rare and notable moments. Among these are a heart-stopping rendition of the previously unreleased 'Guitardjamm', filmed inside a derelict herring oil tank in the far West Fjords; a windblown, one-mic recording of 'Vaka', shot at a dam protest camp subsequently drowned by rising water; and first time acoustic versions of such rare live beauties as 'Staralfur', 'Agaetis Byrjun' and 'Von'.
The Hvarf / Heim CD is made up primarily of two EPs. The title of the first, Hvarf, translates appropriately as "disappeared," as its five tracks are new recordings of lost songs from various points in Sigur Ros's history. The first three, 'Salka,' 'Hljomalind' and 'I Gaer,' were never released either because they were not recorded, or because they were recorded and then not included on a finished album. The fourth and fifth, 'Von' and perennial live favorite 'Hafsol' are radical and complete reimaginings of songs from the band's first album, the original versions of which were recorded by the band's Jonsi Birgisson and Georg Holm with drummer Agust Gunnarsson prior to Kjartan Sveinsson and Orri Dyrason joining the band.
An alternative translation of "Hvarf" is "haven," which ties into the title of the second portion of this release, Heim, or "home." Heim's six tracks are live acoustic versions of songs from all four Sigur Ros studio albums recorded in Iceland either during the band's summer 2006 tour or early this spring. The unplugged scenario had been pretty much imposed on the band, there being no power at some of the locations. Four of the songs here ('Untitled 1,' 'Unititled 3,' 'Agaetis Byrjun' (never performed live before this last summer) and 'Heysatan') were played acoustically on the road during the summer tour, with the remaining 'Staralfur' and 'Von,' being first interpreted for a protest concert against a planned road development next to the band's studio in the artistic community of Alafoss, back in February 2007
There will be an exclusive screening of Heima Sept. 14 in Akureyri, Iceland, which will be followed by the film's official premiere on Sept. 27 in Reykjavik on the opening night of the Icelandic International Film Festival which runs from Sep 27 - Oct 7

Playing in deserted fish factories, outsider art follies, far-flung community halls, sylvan fields, darkened caves and the huge horseshoe-shaped Asbyrgi canyon (formed, legend has it, by the hoofprint of Odin's six-legged horse Sleipnir), the band reached an entirely new spectrum of the Icelandic population; young and old, ardent and merely quizzical, entirely by word-of-mouth.
Material from all four of the band's albums is featured, including many rare and notable moments. Among these are a heart-stopping rendition of the previously unreleased 'Guitardjamm', filmed inside a derelict herring oil tank in the far West Fjords; a windblown, one-mic recording of 'Vaka', shot at a dam protest camp subsequently drowned by rising water; and first time acoustic versions of such rare live beauties as 'Staralfur', 'Agaetis Byrjun' and 'Von'.
The Hvarf / Heim CD is made up primarily of two EPs. The title of the first, Hvarf, translates appropriately as "disappeared," as its five tracks are new recordings of lost songs from various points in Sigur Ros's history. The first three, 'Salka,' 'Hljomalind' and 'I Gaer,' were never released either because they were not recorded, or because they were recorded and then not included on a finished album. The fourth and fifth, 'Von' and perennial live favorite 'Hafsol' are radical and complete reimaginings of songs from the band's first album, the original versions of which were recorded by the band's Jonsi Birgisson and Georg Holm with drummer Agust Gunnarsson prior to Kjartan Sveinsson and Orri Dyrason joining the band.
An alternative translation of "Hvarf" is "haven," which ties into the title of the second portion of this release, Heim, or "home." Heim's six tracks are live acoustic versions of songs from all four Sigur Ros studio albums recorded in Iceland either during the band's summer 2006 tour or early this spring. The unplugged scenario had been pretty much imposed on the band, there being no power at some of the locations. Four of the songs here ('Untitled 1,' 'Unititled 3,' 'Agaetis Byrjun' (never performed live before this last summer) and 'Heysatan') were played acoustically on the road during the summer tour, with the remaining 'Staralfur' and 'Von,' being first interpreted for a protest concert against a planned road development next to the band's studio in the artistic community of Alafoss, back in February 2007
There will be an exclusive screening of Heima Sept. 14 in Akureyri, Iceland, which will be followed by the film's official premiere on Sept. 27 in Reykjavik on the opening night of the Icelandic International Film Festival which runs from Sep 27 - Oct 7
