The song “Little Lie” from Nashville-based artist Lindi Ortega will be featured in tonight’s episode of ABC’s new hit series “Nashville.” Cigarettes & Truckstops, the highly anticipated follow-up album from the musician, is available now on Last Gang Records. Ortega’s JUNO award-nominated debut album, Little Red Boots, gathered praise from USA Today who declared that the debut, “radiates rowdy, rootsy Americana” and Time Out New York who described it as, “a clutch of instantly memorable tunes that show tenderness and sass at once.” Cigarettes & Truckstops has already garnered attention from Daytrotter, No Depression which calls it, “stunningly mature, yet engagingly accessible,” and Amazon.com which is featuring Ortega as an “Artist on the Rise.” To continue to support the release, Ortega is currently on tour with Social Distortion.
Cigarettes & Truckstops was largely inspired by Ortega’s move to Nashville from her hometown, Toronto, which brought her closer to the origins of many of her influences, including Hank Williams. By reading a biography of Williams, Ortega discovered his mentor Rufus “Tee-Tot” Payne, the street performer who taught Williams to play guitar. This sparked Ortega’s interest in the influence of blues on early country—a fascination that comes through strongly on the record. Ortega brought on praised producer and T-Bone Burnett musician Colin Linden (O Brother Where Art Thou, Lucinda Williams, Bruce Cockburn) for the project when she found that he shared her interest in blues and the roots of country music.
Ortega has toured extensively in the past year, opening for acts like Social Distortion, Dierks Bentley, Burton Cummings, and James Vincent McMorrow. Of her live performance, the Chicago Sun Times notes, “[her] ebullient personality and powerful voice make for a striking presence,” while The Pittsburgh Tribune Review adds, “ [she] stands out.” See reverse for tour dates.
