Slam Dunk Teams up with Noisey.com to Premiere the New Track "Dying Breed" and Spends Time Talking Basketball and some Killer Dunks
Band Confirmed for CMJ Music Festival
“Slam Dunk mix the garage rock swagger of bands like Black Lips and the Strange Boys with a sense of scrappy fun.” – CHRY Radio
On November 13, 2012 File Under: Music will release Welcome to Miami, the sophomore album from Slam Dunk (Jordan Minkoff, Duncan McConnell, Caitlin Gallupe, Luke Postl, Kain Bryson). Produced by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Ladyhawke, Cave Singers), the eclectic rock-n-roll stomp of the band’s sophomore release is backed by manic, saxophone freak-out psychedelic, backwoods howling and the occasional splash of minimalism. From the opening soul hits of "Can't Stand It" and on to the thunderous spaghetti-western rumble of "Horse Bumper," Slam Dunk find themselves venturing off into a myriad of styles that make up a dense and inspired album. The band has already been touring in Canada, previewing material from Welcome to Miami, and will make their way down to the U.S. this fall. They are already confirmed to perform three shows during CMJ next week in New York. The band will perform at Don Pedro on 10/18 and have two day shows on 10/20. They'll be at Fontana's at 1:30pm before running over to Brooklyn to play the Rock Shop at 4pm.
As a lead up to the release of Welcome to Miami, Slam Dunk teamed up with the folks at Noisey.com to premiere the track "Dying Breed". They also caught up with editor Ben Shapiro to talk dunks. The band was given seven, supremely killer slam dunks and had a whole lot to say about it.
Forming in the summer of 2009, the group of five Victoria-based friends decided to create a band that would incorporate everything they adored in a classic pop hook, but invoked with something more cathartic, brash and chaotic. Slam Dunk quickly became one of the west coast’s most revered live acts. Described as the “E-Street band on Crack”, Slam Dunk's live shows command people to lose their, um, stuff, to a blend of shout-along choruses and twisting fuzz-guitar melodies. In the summer of 2010, the band took their live show on the road in both Canada and the U.S. following the release of, what Beatroute Magazine cited as its’ “7 inch release of the year”, their EP, Only Fun. This EP granted the band chart positions on campus radio stations across Canada, generous reviews and supporting slots for such notable acts as Les Savy Fav, Wavves and Japandroids. In 2011, the band released their full-length debut, The Shivers, which also saw amazing reviews and radio play. The album was also nominated for a Polaris Music Prize.
“Slam Dunk’s debut LP begins inauspiciously enough, as the track ‘Only Fun’ opens with a whine of feedback and a single guitar chord. At the 13-second mark, however, all hell breaks loose: a demonic, throat-tearing scream suddenly cuts through the mix, lasting for 10 bloodcurdling seconds while the band explodes into a speedy garage-punk stomp. The remaining two minutes are an adrenalized mix of gleefully sloppy group shouts, ferocious guitar leads, and ultra-catchy hooks. Having sufficiently blown your mind with Track 1, the Victoria four-piece keeps the volume loud and the tempos brisk.” – Straight.com
