Sturgill Simpson's NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert premieres

STURGILL SIMPSON’S NPR MUSIC TINY DESK CONCERT PREMIERES

EXTENSIVE FALL TOUR CONFIRMED

“CONAN” PERFORMANCE CONFIRMED ON SEPTEMBER 10

“Best New Country Badass.”
Rolling Stone

“It is the best country record of the year, hands down. That is, if you can even call it country. Frankly, I don’t know what it is, except for brilliant…”—Esquire

“We’ll be lucky to hear a stronger album—country or otherwise—this year.”—The Washington Post

“…will endure as one of this young century’s best traditionalist country records.”—Stereogum

Sturgill Simpson’s NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert recently premiered and can now be viewed/shared here. Of his performance, NPR Music’s Robin Hilton praises, “…Simpson is a force. His acoustic-guitar work in this solo performance is phenomenal, and he possesses a thundering voice that made the NPR offices shudder.” The acoustic session features songs from Simpson’s two LPs—“Time After All” and “Water in the Well” from last year’s High Top Mountain and “Turtles All The Way Down” and “Life of Sin” from this year’s Metamodern Sounds In Country Music (iTunes, Amazon, Bandcamp).

Simpson will continue his extensive worldwide tour this fall, including a sold-out headlining show at L.A.’s The Troubadour as well as club dates throughout the Southeast, Southwest, Pacific Northwest and Midwest. The tour also includes shows supporting Zac Brown Band, Jason Isbell and Drive By Truckers. See below for complete details.

In addition to the tour, Simpson and his band—bassist Kevin Black, guitarist Laur Joamets and drummer Miles Miller—will perform on “Conan” on Wednesday, September 10. Earlier this summer, they made their network television debut on the “Late Show with David Letterman” and were featured on the BBC’s “Later Live with Jools Holland,” “Later…with Jools Holland” and American Public Media’s “A Prairie Home Companion.” Simpson is also nominated for “Emerging Artist of the Year” at the 2014 Americana Honors & Awards.

Earlier this summer, a new music video from Simpson, “Life of Sin: Live at RCA Studio A,” premiered at Rolling Stone Country and can now be viewed/shared here. Filmed by LR Baggs as part of their “Handcrafted Video Series,” the session was recorded earlier this summer on a rare day off at the legendary Nashville studio. An exclusive interview with Simpson and producer Dave Cobb filmed at RCA Studio A can be viewed here.

Of Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, Rolling Stone heralds, “Sounds Like: Merle Haggard with a stack of books on cosmology and metaphysics,” while Garden & Gun praises, “Metamodern is what country music should sound like.” Moreover, The Washington Post calls him, “Country music’s most exciting new outsider” and The Wall Street Journal describes, “the album salts old-school country, bluegrass and gospel sounds with hints of psychedelia and even electronica—although fans of his authentic-country cred aren’t likely to be disappointed.” Additionally, NPR Music recently premiered his music videos for “The Promise” and “Turtles All The Way Down.”

Produced once again by friend and trusted collaborator Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Lindi Ortega, Jamey Johnson), Metamodern Sounds In Country Music was recorded live-to-tape at Nashville’s LCS studio over four days in late 2013. Of the album, Simpson comments, “Myriad worldly offerings—religion, drugs, and more—all claim to be the omnipotent universal truth, but in my experience, love is the only certainty. That’s what this record is about.”

Simpson’s portrait on the album cover was designed by friend and painter Jason Seiler, who is perhaps best known for illustrating Pope Francis for TIME Magazine’s 2013 “Person of the Year” issue in addition to contributing art to publications such as The New York Times, Rolling Stone and The Wall Street Journal.
